    Holding the spark plug wire further away from the plug caused it to have better spark because when you create high resistance (aka making the electricity have to jump an inch) it actually gains energy- aka then has great spark. This is an old hot rodder trick, whenever the engine would flood from fuel, they would pull all the plug wires off and just hang them on the plugs (make it have to jump a large gap before getting to the plug like you did) to allow it to generate greater spark energy and start even with fouled plugs

    • @JunkyardDigs

      Can confirm, this was one of the 1st tricks I was taught as an apprentice mechanic by an old head. Still my go to on flooded small engines. 👍
      Pro tip: You can decarbon a fuel fouling plug and bring it back round on a running motor by "gapping" the boot slightly off for 10-20 seconds on the affected cylinder. The bump in current is no joke. Saved me a few times on the trail with my 2 stroke bikes and sleds.

    • @earlbrown
      @earlbrown Год назад +44

      @@JunkyardDigs The science is a wet plug won't let the coil charge enough to be able to jump a gap. When you unplug the wire and force it to jump there, the coil can saturate enough to fire fully hot and dry out the plug. That's pretty common on motorcycles that don't have a distributor and don't have a gap from the rotor/cap. Kinda odd in your case with this engine.
      The thing you saw before you bought plugs was carbon tracking. The path of least resistance on that plug was to run down the carbon and hit the body of the plug instead of jumping to the side electrode.
      EDIT: When you said ''I threw in this random Delco'', I thought to myself, "Self, I wonder if he's trying to use shitty ass Champion plugs''. About two seconds later, I had my answer.
      Years ago when I was a service manager at a bike shop, I made a FORTUNE fixing ATVs that wouldn't run just by finding a Champion plug and putting in an NGK. I've nevr found out how they can still sell spark plugs when they suck so bad (and not in the good way).

One temporary response is to put the boots loose on the plugs, coil and, or cap so that the conductors don't quite touch. More permanently, consider resistor wire and/or resistor plugs? also maybe try another ignition module or inductor pickup coil?

    If you’re looking for a transmission for the truck, you’d probably have better luck finding a heavy-duty transmission off a larger application.
    A recommendation I’d make regarding a transmission for the 12-Valve Cummins is an Allison 2500PTS or AT545. You’d be able to find those from box trucks or school buses and those transmissions are quite stout for usage. School bus transmissions (due to constant stop-n-go use) have hardened components to hold up to abuse.
    The 12-Valve being used in various vehicular applications means there’s a whole bunch of adapter plates to mate it to various transmissions (mainly larger trucks and the heavy duty Dodge Ram pickup trucks) so finding an adapter plate for a transmission would be relatively easy, especially an Allison transmission.

    Oh hell yes Kevin and crew... thought I'd throw it out there that acetone mixed with ATF in a fancy sprayer is the best penetrating lubricant by far and it's super cheap-unstuck a few engines and lots of rusty bolts with it, on the daily. Also another tip: just the tip, and only for a minute: if you buy a compression whistle, they're a neat and useful toy that can be modified with a grease zerk: you fill a cylinder with both valves closed with ATF/acetone mix to the top-screw on compression whistle with a zerk tapped in. Then pump in grease at 10,000+psi from a grease gun. Either the engine gets unstuck or it blows the head gasket. Used a version of that many times with great success, even a rusty Honda bike with no spark plugs outdoors for 10 years

    I have good luck with starting old engines that have set for years by putting 80 90w gear oil in the cylinders. It has worked on engines that had 10 lbs compression. Once the engine starts and warms up the rings come loose and the engines start and run good after.

  • @nferraro222
    @nferraro222 Год назад +28

    As I recall, the Thermoboxes weren't a problem to rebuild - you just had to check for bowel warping (plastic main body) and I THINK the secondary hangers were real thin and prone to bending. Either way, Mook'll probably need four shots to rebuild one.

    • @MichaelDavis-cy4ok
      @MichaelDavis-cy4ok Год назад +4

      I have a '79 Dodge with a 318 that has a Thermoquad I'm about to go through, and I've been doing a ton of research. You're right, bowl warpage was a problem, which can sometimes be helped with some fine grit sandpaper glued to a sheet of glass with rubber cement. Other issues tend to include:
      1) The crossover tubes that feed the primary wells tend to come un-epoxied over time.
      2) People tend to try to use regular o-rings on the primary wells when they actually require X-rings.
      3) People overtorque the air filter housing wingnut, pulling the top of the body away from the bowl and causing vacuum leaks.
      If you avoid/fix these problems, apparently they run really well. I'm excited to find out.

    What I have learned with Champion spark plugs over the years of wrenching and trying to get things running is that they will make you chase your tail for problems that don't exist over and over until you finally realize oh wait its a champion plug no wonder. As a kid I had a great mentor for wrenching on things he taught me almost everything I know and he always use to tell me how much he hated Champion spark plugs and back then I didn't really understand what he was talking about but over the years of hands on experience of my own I now understand and have run in to the problem way more than once. Great video Kevin I enjoy all your videos sorry for the rant.
