    Almost 13 months have passed since the initial setup in this video.
    I upgraded to a hot tub circulation pump, pool filter, and external PVC plumbing with an Ozone generator. The water quality was excellent!
    However, that setup created a number of issue with heat gain (I live in central Texas) not letting the water get any colder than 46 deg. F. and nearly tripling my electric bill!
    I'm going to my next experiment and will keep everyone posted.

      How well did the Aquarium filter work for you?

      @@williamhatchell9069 - I just now saw your post. The internal submerged aquarium pump/filter worked (and is working) very well, along with an ozone generator.

      Thank you. I wasn't the first person to use a chest freezer to make a cold plunge, but I was the first person to innovate many of the techniques used that make it work long term.
      Please see my website and other videos to find the updated best practices. My early versions have been significantly improved.

    would it be more economical to use a water chiller?

    • @JohnRichterAustin
      @JohnRichterAustin  2 года назад

      There are many ways to set it either system. If you are basing it purely on dollars, no.
      A DIY chest freezer cold plunge can be set up for anywhere between $300 - $1, 600 whereas a chiller system is going to be closer to $2,000 - $2,500.
      Chiller systems cost usually between $10 - $20 per month to run and chest freezer systems run $10 -$20.

    I think enzyme only works well in hot tubs. Enzyme activity goes down drastically as the environment gets colder (unless perhaps it was made for cold applications).

    • @JohnRichterAustin
      @JohnRichterAustin  3 года назад

      Scott - you are 100% correct. The hot tub enzymes didn't do anything at all.
      Also - I have learned a LOT in the last nearly 4 years since I put that system together.
      I have a Facebook group (see the link in the video comments) and wrote a book on the subject!

    Hi!!! I haven’t been able to find on what temperature setting should I put my chest freezer. Mine is from 1 to 7. Which number do you recommend? I do like ice on my cold plunge 😃🧊

    • @JohnRichterAustin
      @JohnRichterAustin  2 месяца назад +1

      @maryl.6329 hi Mary- good question. The beat thing to do is use a temperature controller to keep your water within 1-2°F of the range you want.
      Many people use the InkBirds because they are affordable.
      Make sure you have the one with the silicone-covered probe.

    When you add the supports/pads on the bottom, how do you recommend attaching? Double sided tape? Hot Glue Gun? Other? Your book is great and the diagram was really helpful, but wanted this info also. Thanks.

    • @JohnRichterAustin
      @JohnRichterAustin  2 года назад

      I have never attached the support pads underneath. When they are the correct thickness, once they are in place, they will stay in place with the weight of the chest freezer and water. The reasons I don't attach them are 1) There is no practical advantage, 2) there is no difference from an aesthetics perspective, 3) if there is ever a leak on the bottom, you don't have to remove them, and 4) you can easily inspect the bottom for rust when you drain your tub once a year for cleaning/maintenance/inspection.

    Put 15 pounds on epsom salt and keep the cooler below freezing, drain it every other week and there is no need for such an extravagant set up

    • @JohnRichterAustin
      @JohnRichterAustin  5 лет назад +1

      Thanks for your comment. I'm no longer using this setup.
      The drain and refill method is 9k for some folks. That said, I still prefer using a sanitizer and pump/filter because consistent regular use is important to me.
      It takes about 5 days to chill the water in central texas during the summer, and it is a hassle.
      I need ease of use and consistency. :)

    • @drscott1
      @drscott1 5 лет назад +1

      FYI I am in Phoenix. I keep it around 20 degrees have the salt in it.
      I do throw 20 lbs of ice in with the salt then fill it with filtered water. I can get that thing to 40 overnight.
      Enjoy, the cold baths really are amazing!

    • @JohnRichterAustin
      @JohnRichterAustin  7 лет назад

      Hi David, I'm not sure that the enzymes were actually working. Most of the enzymes are meant for hot tubs and need to have warm water to work correctly. At colder temps, the enzymes are not active.
      I'm a few weeks away from getting the entire (newly designed) system with the ozone generator up and running. I'll keep everyone posted on the results.

      Hi Gabby, I'm happy to do that. However, I just moved and am still getting my basic house items set up... the cold plunge might have to wait another week or two. Awesome! How did you decide between an aquarium filter and an above-ground pool filter (like Intex)? Meanwhile, happy cold-plunging!

    • @JohnRichterAustin
      @JohnRichterAustin  7 лет назад +2

      This has been a ready-fire-aim process.... not well thought-out. I'm discovering problems as I go. Definitely not the recommended way of doing things.
      The decision was mostly cost and ease of use... an inexpensive pump AND filter all in one place. However, I'm still having water quality issues, and of course the aquarium filter is not heavy-duty enough to make the ozone generator work.
      SO.... I'm back to the drawing board.

      I GUESS BUT HONESTLY, YOU DAMAGED A PERFECTLY FINE CHEST FREEZER BY ADDING ALL THOSE HOLES TO IT, I'M PERSONALLY GOING TO GET ONE LATER ON AND I'M GOING TO ADD AN ELECTRIC TIMER, WATER, A THERMOMETER , A SMALL NET TO CATCH DEBRIS AND A LEVER ON THE DRAIN HOLE AT THE BOTTOM TO RUN A HOSE OUT MY GARAGE TO DRAIN THE WATER, THAT'S ALL YOU NEED

    • @leduecb87
      @leduecb87 5 лет назад

      A table spoon of bleach every few weeks and after you get it down to temp a timer that turns it on 2 +/- hours a day is what i do. Aquarium filter, Pool filter, ozone filter, enzymes, airation , hole saw , pvc pipes.... you're certainly a hobbyist ;) When do you find time to use the thing?
