I think he was just dating her cause it was expected, a relationship of convenience. You can’t betray who you never loved. Same thing with not sticking up for Sam, he was just a coward sticking to his appearances instead of embracing who he truly wanted to be.

The entire movie, aside from being too scared to be himself to everyone, I actually really liked Austin’s character. Like beside what Sam goes through, we see even just a bit of glimpse how Austin’s life is. Full of expectations and was literally not given a chance to decide things for himself. The only time he got to be him, especially when wanting to be a writer, is when he’s chatting with Sam online. While I know most would say he cheated on Shelby, and yes in a way, he did.
