Rob It worked on my DCPJ562DW , although the magenta when pushed into the slot made a hole in the electrical tape, I persevered by putting more tape on, and it eventually worked, so thanks for saving me time and money
Brother, you are a breath of fresh air. Not only did you speak English but you were loud, crisp, and without the BS....just telling us what works - and it did. Thanks again!!!
100% agree and he didn't use a damn robot voice like another video I just TRIED to watch and absolutely couldn't handle listening to it. Thank you man so much
Hi This just saved my life. My Brother MFCJ4625W erroneously reported ink run out on a new yellow cartridge. I then stupidly removed the magenta cartridge and when I put it back it said that was empty too. Tried to get help from Brother via chat and it was pathetic. I'm never going to buy another Brother printer again, I only have this one so I can print on card. However this fix has got it working again....Many thanks.
HOLY SXXX it's worked like a charm! You have not only saved my money but also the environment from the printer companies which are cheating us to replace the ink cartridges.
it worked for me. I have a J43OW I took a piece of paper and colored it black, and cut the strip and put scotch tape on it and put is between the little bar that is in front of the ink window. I Inserted it so that no light could get in.. and it worked. I didn't have any black electrical tape. I just need to block the sensor in the machine. Sweet.. wish I knew this trick sooner. But happy to know it now~!!!!! This will save us money... :)
Worked exactly as explained in the video. I went from seeing half full of ink in my XL cartridges with an out of ink message, to Full ink status in a matter of minutes. Thank you
Thank you. I used vinyl red tape since I couldn't find the electrical. It worked beautifully. I purchased a set of color just two weeks ago and never used it. The error message popped up. The sharpie didn't work but I found ur hack and I'm printing, thanks again.
Works perfect with masking tape (all I had) on a Brother MFC-J6530DW. You sir are a genius. I have been printing on an "Empty" black cartridge for 2 weeks now. :)
Many thanks. I have a stack of 'empty' cartridges that still have ink in them. I only print in black anyway - no way that Magenta is empty!! Grateful for your video.
Thanks Rob, it worked ! I have been shelling out the bucks regularly and once again my printer refused to continue operating after just 2 months or so from the last expensive cartridge replace. I tried your hack and it worked !
@@runneryg I keep on recycling the chips I got from these cartridges. Not sure where you are located but these are from a Dutch webshop. www.123inkt.nl/search/?search=127224
Works for continuous ink supply too, just had to fool printer by removing jammed paper to think it was closed after changing/ filling ink. Love your video, straight to the point and clear. Thanks 🌹
Great. Thank you. In 12 years of using my Brother MFC-465CN I probably replaced the cartridges twice. I always thought it was possible to bypass it but I never tried it. After seeing your video; I think I will. Great hack. Thanks, Rob.
I knew what the problem was but just wasn't sure how to solve it, and THIS was *exactly* what I was looking for - simple, effective and straight to the point! 🙌Thanks man, you really save me so much frustration!! Didn't have black electrical tape but just painted some masking tape black and it works like a charm as well!
Just bought a brother printer off Amazon. I checked out the reviews and most negative ones were regarding this issue. I'll be taping them all up when I receive the printer. Thanks man!
Thank you! ADDITIONAL INFO - It worked with Brother DCP-195C and black ink - with a little trick - there's an empty "window" next to the level indicator - DO NOT tape over the empty window, just the level indicator!
my model is JB6510 DW, this method works. Thank you for posting this! noted I cut out a smaller piece of black tape just to cover the little 'sensor" window. not the big one as it shown in the video.
Great video. Thanks. Another way to deal with this is to change the printer to B/W modus, using the service manual available on the internet. For my MFC-J5320WD it works as follows: Press the Home symbol for 5 seconds, then touch the lower, empty field of the appearing screen. Enter *2864 to enter the maintenance mode. Then enter 88 for the register settings, change the ASM04 register from default 00000000 to 00100000. (ASM04=00100000 at the end). Press SET and then type 99 for ending maintenance mode, printer rebooting. Printing is now only B/W, even with empty color ink cartridges.
Thanks, Jesus. I actually broadcast sports as my full time job. Appreciate your comment. Please consider subscribing to my channel - ruclips.net/user/robhipp
If you don't have electrical tape use piece of paper towel, color a corner in with sharpie, tear it off, and use regular tape over sensor. Worked with my brother mfc-440cn.
Hey Rob...thanks for this great idea.. it is a simple hack and to-the-point description of the solution... my brother printer works great now.. and i subscribed to your channel... pl continue this good work.. cheers
This is amazing if you have an older Brother printer. My ink was supposedly 'out' in May 2023, and here I am in January still printing away! (Of course, I only really print shipping labels, but I have printed many since then). Not that the generic cartridges are real expensive, but I hate waste!
Great Video man. Unfortunately i'm getting a different error: "Cannot Detect", even after putting a new cartridge (it suggests me to open, replace, erc.). Any ideas?
Awesome trick. I had to paint over the window with black paint because the tape wasn't working, and a sharpie would still let in light through the smudges. A small coat of Crayola kids paint worked
THIS TOTALLY WORKED FOR ME! MINE WAS A MFC-J200. I HAD TO REMOVE THE COVER OF THE CARTRIDGE INSIDE WHICH CONNECTS IT TO THE PRINTER, BEFORE I PUT IN THE BLACK ELECTRICAL TAPE. I FAILED A COUPLE OF TIMES, STILL NOT DETECTED, BUT AT THE END OF THE DAY, HUMAN BEAT THE TECHNOLOGY! ROFL! 😜😜 IM JUST SO HAPPY! 😂😂 KEEP IT UP!! 👋👋👍👍
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!! I have been messing around with my printer for 2 weeks now I just bought brand new ink cartridges and it was still saying it was out of ink. My next step was buying a new printer.
This has happened to me so many times and I finally decided that since I could actually hear ink sloshing around inside the cartridge I decided to see if there was an answer. This totally worked for a MFC-J480DW model printer. Now I am just kicking myself for not looking this up sooner. Have replaced cartridges in the past because even though I could see ink in the little window and hear it inside the cartridge the printer would not accept that the cartridge had ink in it. I could see replacing the cartridge if it was empty; but as you showed with your cartridge that was not empty nor were my cartridges this time or in the past. Will be using this in the future as well. I can't believe Brother would make a printer(s) like this. Honestly I think someone should sue Brother over this misleading people into thinking they need to replace a cartridge before it actually does. There is no telling how many people have been cheated out of money having to replace a cartridge when it wasn't actually out of ink yet, working, and capable of printing. The printer first had an issue with all 4 cartridges; but after pulling them out and putting back in it still said that the blue and black did not have enough ink. Well after the tape method it printed black ink with no problem. Shame on Brother.
That's why i like brother products, they even try to make it harder to hack it as HP and EPSON. :) People will find a way anyway or just not buying other products. Brother all the way ! :)
I've just received my new brother and as stated, the box comes with a year of ink(?). Trusting when the time comes, this direction will be of gargantuan benefit.
Taking a strip of black tape and covering it entirely did not work for me unfortunately. The printer would say "cannot detect" and I could not get past that error no matter what I tried. I have the MFC-J4700W and am also using the knock-off ink cartridges. For the record, I resorted to trying the black sharpie and that did not work either. Came back to the black tape method and after trying a few configurations I remembered my original Brother ink cartridges had this little gap at the front of the Ink window. I cut the black tape a little short and didn't cover the front end of the window on the knock-off cartridge, where the gap was on the original brother cartridge, popped it in and it worked! So simple yet so frustrating that Brother makes these things in a fashion that wastes ink. Thanks for your help though man, the black tape method is the way to go, just some models may need a little more finessing to get it right.
I have a Brother MFC-J5330DW and i found it out by my self, on the upper side there is a little window with some kind of a floating device, just cover it and its good as new plus i cut off the internet connection, actually the printer is working fine, but i read about printers that refused to print or have become very slow after a update.
Thank you so much, I’d tried everything and nothing had worked, so I coloured a strip of paper black, and selotape did it over the cartridge as you instructed, and it printed!! 😃
Hi great video very informative does it work on the Brother MFC-J5335DW, the cartridges are very different to the ones you are showing in the video if so where does the tape go. thanks
Works with the J985DW and masking tape, but I had to cut tiny rectangles to put over the windows because wrapping it around made it not click back in right.
Great tip ! If the printer manufacturers would simply make / provide refillable ink cartridges, every user / consumer would be happy and less trash generated. HP, Brother, and other manufacturers do just the opposite - they do imbedded firmware to not accept previously used cartridges, third party clones, and can even disable printhead / printing altogether.

thanks to you I will not throw any more.

That's a great question. I have not tried to refill so I don't know.

Hi great video very informative does it work on the Brother MFC-J5335DW, the cartridges are very different to the ones you are showing in the video if so where does the tape go. thanks
It worked on my other brother printer too! Thank you!
I got an MFC-J650DW and it worked perfectly fine for me. Thanks !
(Refillable ink cartridges)
Thanks Mate . It works with a black nail polish as well

Thnk u so much bro
Works with the J985DW and masking tape, but I had to cut tiny rectangles to put over the windows because wrapping it around made it not click back in right.
it worked fine on my DCP-J562DW, thx man!
