Tyler Tuskman is a name that just screams "supporting cast," not "main character." If Mike and Sully just worked with the guy instead of him basically replacing them, it'd just seem like harmless worldbuilding instead of offensively lame.

or hell, build off of that idea! Lean into it! Have him be a background character--even literally showing him as such in a flashback where mike and sully are doing something. And then have him strive to find something that makes him stand out, maybe make him try to be someone he's not. It'd be predictable, but it'd at least explain his genericism

The thing that bothers me about Val's backstory is that if she's the kind of person to talk to a guy one single time and believe that makes them best friends, then she should be under the delusion that she's friends with everybody. Her personality is that she's affectionate, wears her emotions on her sleeve and isn't shy about getting into people's faces. The idea that she was lonely and never had any other friends in college just doesn't mesh with what we know about her. Honestly, her being a wierdo who thinks she's the most popular person around even though no one can stand her is a lot funnier than her just being single mindedly focused on Tyler.

Make him bigger than Sully, more imposing, a darker color palette and none of the softer features like fur or friendly eyes. This guy who would’ve killed it as a scare-r if only Monsters Inc. still used Scream power. So now this giant hideous abomination has to try to learn comedy but it doesn’t come easy because most kids scream at him in sight. That’s a way better premise!

One of the most interesting parts of animation is character design. Just by looking at someone you can tell a lot about them. Sure, judging a book by its cover is a big no-no that preschoolers learn, but this is different.
You can tell by people's expressions what they feel. You can guess what they are like by their style, do they look more professional, cute, casual, etc.
Concept art and promos are supposed to show the basics of the characters. I decided to speculate how Taylor's design and personality changed.
At first, he was bright yellow with four arms, and small horns, and was smaller in general. With this anatomy, he was practically made for working with multiple tools.
The second design gave him bigger horns and fewer arms. In both, he has this big smile, curious look as if wondering what to fix next.
The third one shows his current look but with a tuft of yellow fur as a nod to his predecessors. In the fourth and official one, they decided to drop it or Tylor dyes his fur. Now he is a big purple monster with long horns.
As the development progressed, Tylor became less and less suited for the job of an engineer.
    - He has fewer hands.
    - He is so tall and big that it will be hard for him to get into small places.
    - His horns will be getting in the way, even the trailer shows it as they hit some pipe.
    - He is only shown smiling with his mother, after graduating from MU. For most of the trailer, he is shown to be worried, confused, annoyed, or dare I say scared.
In my opinion, somewhere in the development, Tylor Tuskmon was changed from a happy and enthusiastic new worker ( We will make kids laugh now. This is gonna be great! ) to a would-be scarer whose life got just turned upside down ( Are you kidding me ? I went to the MU for this ? )

Hell, take a look at Randall's design in Monsters University. Sure, children are scared of different things and maybe Boo thinks Randall looks scary, but I always got the impression that Boo found Randall scary because of the way he acts (especially when Boo isn't afraid of Sully at all until he accidentally roars in front of her).

Also the idea of Sulley and Mike integrating monsters into comedy sounds AMAZING! It would've been so much fun! It also could've shown the conflict of monsters not wanting to change to laughter. Like a wrinkly old squid saying "Back in my day it wasn't a proper scare unless the kid was convulsing on the ground in terror!! The worst thing about Monsters at Work being centered around a background monster design is that the other monsters are perfect main character material. Like Flint. Or the three sorority sisters. Or Carla. *Anyone* but Tyler Tuskmon and MIFT.
Hell, I'd love to hear the riveting parallel to Mexican immigration story that clearly radiates from Carla's name alone.
But seriously, I like the plot, but the character design and wasted potential is just...horrifying, really. Especially since a deleted scene shows Tylor's graduation and it has like, *so* much more character injected into it.

What frustrates me most about this show is that I CAN see its potential right in front of me, yet the staff squandered it with weak writing and terrible characters. There were plenty of moments where the show presented a concept that, in my opinion, was very clever and helped expand the setting of the movie: An example being the ep where they show the procedure of fixing a kid's room if a scarer acciddentally breaks something incriminating. That's really clever! Or the ep revolving about the mystery of why the Abominable Snowman was banished; The idea that in truth it was less about the mail tampering and rather that Waternoose silenced him after he found out docs related to Randall's scare extractor was a cool recontext of the 1st film....
BUT it's all wasted because the show has to revolve around bland Tyler and Jim boring friends because the writers wanted to just write a generic The Office-like sitcom!

  • @cryptic1999
    @cryptic1999 Год назад +22

I think Tyler's blandness comes to the idea that he's supposed to be on of those "everyman" characters though more specifically, he's supposed to be represent those who go through college for a profession that ends up not being used anymore and just feeling lost because that one job that they were training for ends up being null void. I do agree that the designs and personalities could've been done better, especially for some of the Mifts. Glad I'm not the only one that was annoyed at how they acted towards Tyler and yet when the justified anger for Tyler comes, we're supposed to feel bad for reasons? The show could've done better but I did somewhat enjoyed. My favorite part was probably the scene where Sulley talks about Boo and how he felt bad for scaring her that one time and that moment is what motivates him to go from scare power to laugh power and why he never wants to go back to the old methods.

And now this monster, that studied his whole live and knows that he was born to be the scariest monster to ever existed, who has just entered the job of hia dreams, discoverd in the last second that his dream job now his a clown fest, where laugh took the place of screams, this would be a dope series. The series could be more about reviving the old ways and how the scary monster would find jobs now that they were substitute by the funny monsters.

Suggestions that MAW should've gone with:
-Some MI material stated that the company didn't convert all floors to laugh floors; some remained scare floors and naughty kids got scared instead of entertained
-Tylor maybe instead has potential to be a comedian, but is reluctant to take up the offer because he has a fear of kids (like Sully in an early version of the movie), so he just sticks to MIFT because it's easier (as long as he doesn't go in a kid's room). Thus his storyline would be about him finding out how he got his fear and how he overcomes or copes with it
-Duncan could've been a former scarer who had some issues scaring kids a little TOO well, and was sent to MIFT as punishment. His goal would be to get MI to go back to it scaring routes and tries to sabotage the new comedy routines of the other scarers in an attempt to prove they're not ready for the change

Goddd I only manage to do half of the season as it was airing but I 100% get what you mean on the infuriating waste of potential. I ADORED the concept and premise of this series, I thought Tyler's initial struggle was a pretty relatable situation for students to go through, especially in the animation department (ex. "you studied hand drawn animation? well the industry is majority rigged animation now, get to learning if you want a job") but it was just WASTED. I felt like no emotional weight was allowed for majority of it so that it could be less serious as a result.
Episode 1 alone, after learning Tyler's parents worked so hard to get him his education, I was expecting him to make a phone call to them and struggle to explain his situation before faking it and saying "Yup, everything's great, mom.". Maybe it would've been cliché, but at least I would've felt his struggle more. I was even expecting going into the series for a moment of Tyler just snapping at Sully about the scare to laughter decision, and how they should switch back to scaring kids since the switch caused problems across the whole company, only for Sully to put his foot down on how he REFUSES to ever let another kid be scared again after what happened with Boo. (edit: apparently that may or may not have happened in the eps I didn't see! good to know)
I'm rambling here, but GOD Monsters at Work was a series I wanted so badly to do well but didn't ;;;;; Your character design rant was also greatly done btw

Personally I really liked this show. Tyler is a fine MC to follow around because everyone he surrounds himself with is so visually distinct, that his near normal humanoid appearance makes him distinct from other people. This is the monster world, and that boring design works for the world.
The show for me was a fine one with some good characterization. Plus you get to see plenty of Mike as he does the comedy classes. I think the runners went into the right direction with this show. I can definitely understand some of gripes but to me it was not that bad. I really liked Sully and Tylor's interactions, but anything with Sully is usually gonna turn out to be pretty great.

Honestly I feel like they could’ve done better with the characters and designs. Imagine a centipede like character who rocks a series of tool belts, is surprisingly good at his work, somewhat antisocial with limited interactions outside of scarying people by just being present. A character who feels like he should’ve been a scarer, but for some reason isn’t even allowed to be with any mention as to why getting everyone going mum about it. Its like how there is that Russian guy from Ratatouille who has a mysterious background that no one really knows. Or like the boss. Sure, you can have him friendly, but maybe make him more of one of those washed up types. Like he’s spent his time there, you can see it taking its toll on him, he still loves what he does, but he has some struggles with changes going on. Also I get that Duncan is supposed to be this Dwight-esq character, but he could’ve been done so much better. Toss in an angle where he sees the boss like a father figure and show it well. Go with that being why he is defensive over trying to get the position. That he feels like it is the end goal of that chapter of his career, after all he’s been through. Maybe make him mimic the bosses mannerisms showing his influence of how he does things.

I just finished season 2 and there was lots of potential with where they were going story-wise but it unfortunately ends in such a predictably generic way. I dunno, I just really hate how they've been writing Tyler and Val. Val has annoyed me as a character since episode 1 and they keep making Tyler out to be unlikeable in his actions despite the fact that they were in a way justified (especially during the baseball game). I hate that type of writing.
I'd go into detail but don't wanna spoil for anyone who hasn't finished it yet. I will say that some viewers may not like a certain thing that happens with two minor characters which occurs in episode 8 and that's all I'm gonna say about it.
