ASOIAF Battle Report 23 - Stannis Baratheon vs. Roose Bolton

- For this special edition battle report, I am playing against Jeroen from the Rotterdam White Scars! He and I played together recently at the War of the North tournament in Hamburg, Germany, organized by the guys from the Hits and Crits channel. Jeroen is playing a Stannis Rightful Heir list versus my Roose Bolton army. We're playing the Game of Thrones game mode. At 52:35 ... I know that I am a greedy player which costs me a lot but using the panic token to take the 33% chance that the D3 will be 3 and killing Stannis would be such a game changer. The bags are still open, he has the supply aid order so the heal is coming. It doesnt matter for you or Jeroen if Stannis remains with 1,2 or 3 wounds. The only thing that matters is his annihilation :D
Yeah this was 100% a misplay on my part. I mention this in my post-game discussion as a big mistake I made. A 33% chance to kill Stannis is better than a 0% chance.

@markusecker8203 no worries, I appreciate the love feedback. Re-watching this game during the editing process, I wondered how this game would have unfolded differently if I had used that panic token and killed Stannis. We’ll never know, but I probably still would have lost hard. 😆
Watching the Bolton archers get blocked from shooting right away and then whittled down with morale checks was painful. I've been in that position too
The morale wounds were brutal on those guys for sure. Panic checks are a pretty universal threat for archers in the game. This circumstances of this game were such a thrill that I didn’t get bothered by the setbacks at all. Probably a once in a lifetime experience. 😃
I have thought about running a elephant, but the few times I have seen one run by other people they have been less than impressive... could just be the people or the list but it was not like s3 golden swordsmen where you just knew the value being added.
However every time I look at mercs I keep coming back to the zorse riders. The ability to stop another units abilities seems... vicious in boltons
I was going to get them an hedge knights some time in the next week or two aka once my painting desk is cleared off.
I provide an alternate Elephant list toward the end of the video that I think works better. It’s definitely a fun list to try out. Zorses sound potentially great, if you can keep them alive. Boltons don’t have much in the way of movement shenanigans in their deck, so Zorses will have to be very carefully tended to. I’d like to see them in action in Boltons though!
Zorse Riders in Boltons has real potential, and possible combos with Vargo Hoat commander.

I'm new to this and I have a question, how does Stannis spend tokens for wounds when he makes attacks? because it doesn't correspond to any ability on the unit or character cards... have I missed something?
Welcome to ASOIAF! Stannis, the Rightful Heir, has a tactics card that can be attached to a unit, called “Tactical Approach”. If it’s attached to Stannis’s unit, his unit can expend a condition token on the enemy when he attacks, to do 3 additional auto wounds to the enemy. When attached to any other unit, it instead does +D3 wounds.

You’re right. If I played those both on the same failed panic test, that shouldn’t have been allowed. Thanks for the correction.

I think Jeroen had them 3D printed. If he sees this, perhaps he can tell you the source.
I'm noticing that most of these games are simply two opposing walls of troops meeting in the middle
Most rank-and-file games tend to have troops colliding roughly in the middle of the table, be it ASOIAF, WH:OW, or historicals. There’s more movement to the game than simply walking forward in a straight line, but based on some of your previous comments, it doesn’t seem like you really enjoy this game. So why keep watching videos of it?
you cant play card "fear ceps man alaive" and then use rose ability. its the same triger.
Yep, this was an error. This was called out in another comment shortly after the video’s release. I hope you enjoyed the game regardless!

Why did you leave the the Swords open in both rounds one and two?
That seems like a lot of casualties that could have been easily avoided.
Or am I missing something?
I believe this is for preventing hits from Varys token.
In Round One, I think I wasn’t really considering that the Lightbringers would be able to range the Blackguard, so the other tactics zones were more of a priority. In Round Two, I think I was fishing for tactics cards and was more interested in the cards and handing out a condition token. I wasn’t thinking about Petyr using a token to get a free bite at the Swords though. The Lightbringers did a ton of work for Jeroen in this game.
Really great to see you and Jeroen get a game in, and the recording came out nicely! Rough day at the office for Roose, those Panic checks were pure murder. Definitely a reminder to get Jeyne’s influence out ASAP against Vicious units! The Steelshanks army looks like a winner, I was thinking of something very similar but with Cutthroats instead of Blackguard. Sounds like you had an awesome time!
I seriously underestimated how devastating the Lightbringers would be. I shouldn’t have, but I did. Jeyne’s influence is definitely clutch when you expect to take vicious panic checks. I think I led off with Shae too often here, going for the early weakened token but opening myself up to panic fails and Fire-arrow chain panic tests.
It was an awesome time that I won’t soon forget. You’ll eventually see a Hits and Crits batrep featuring yours truly at some point. 🤫

How many units do you own? Just out of curiosity.
Around 80 units, including the 4 each that come in starter boxes. How many of my units are painted? Only around 1/4 of them.
