With Artificial Intelligence and Generative AI sweeping the internet, I wanted to discuss the far reaching implications of using that technology to replace genuine human connection.
The Future is Synthetic because we are engineering it that way, to the detriment of everyone involved. SORA may seem like a revolutionary new tool (and it is, to a degree) but it also has disruptive undertones that in my view, have not been fully considered, planned for, mitigated or thought out.

i guess i'm one of those people who you would disagree with on the idea of using AI to detect AI, because if it's too hard to tell by your eyes and ears which it's getting damn near close, hell my own father was scammed into a romance scam and the person running the scam used AI to generate the video footage of the person while in real time and the voice to boot and my dad fell for it hook line and sinker, if a person can't tell that it's a scam and choose to ignore all the red flags such as my dad, then they are doomed to be scammed.
which is why i'm not against the whole idea of using AI to detect AI so that people have some kind of tool that they can use to prevent such things on themselves, if my dad had some definitive tool he could use that he knew about, then maybe he would have been able to avoid the scam altogether.
but then again he was ignoring red flags everywhere because he was lonely and he wanted some kind of companionship, and because of his desperate need for that companionship i almost feel like he would be better sticking his head into an AI girlfriend because at least with that, it's not a scam, but again if it doesn't feel real, he loses all interest, so it's this never ending game of emotions and being scammed by your own emotions.
like how the fuck do your realistically fight something like that? as far as i know and understand, you simply can't, unless you convince him to stay away from all social media and live as a Amish person, but that's not going to happen for the majority of people.

"in just one year" I get what you meant to say, but for those out there that don't... It hasn't been just one year of progression for this AI stuff. It's been years!
People have been working on all aspects of AI for a very long time. A lot of which was being obfuscated from public view. Now that it's hype and cool, we're seeing some of it.
It's what we aren't seeing yet, or rather what we've seen already and weren't told was AI that makes me pause.

She's on her 60s. I am absolutely disgusted by this behaviour because she rather have fake "enhanced" memories rather than real ones simply to brag about it with her neighbours for vanity. My personal theory is that because we've done away with reasonable expectations in society, in the name of mental health, we also did away with incentives to do anything. Especially for men. Everyone will tell you it's good to lose weight, but then also say they don't care if you don't because of being nice or something. Tradionally the father role would enforce these things, but with that deteriorated theres little to do but watch yourself slowly walk into a pit.
The best solution I've found is diet and fasting. Reason being these optimise your metabolic and hormone function. This in tern makes you more sensitive to little things, like the cute girl at work or social situations. Also to your own desires. Other thing correct themselve like gut bacteria problems with helps with genital bacteria that become relient on carbs which spirals your sex drive out of control, leading to pornography addiction and the likes. But this all just my theory and I'm trying to do better myself. I would only reccommend eating for fatty cuts of red meat for energy to live, organs for nutrition and hormones, and fasting to heal from all the bullshit. This I've found also helps restore the desire to do things like workout an actually not feel entirely shit doing it. Fasting is also a staple in every successful religion as a spiritual practice, so it historically had been used as a regualtor on mental health. That said, I'm still working on stuffmyself but this is the best I got for the moment.

When it comes to the topic of AI and isolation, I always wonder why people are more concerned with the symptom (people using AI as an alternative means to solve isolation) and not the problem itself (isolation). Why is it that people, no matter how hard they try to make connections and escape being isolated can't? I don't think just handwaving it away as "Well we have social media so why talk irl" doesn't do it justice, and I think plenty of us have experience with enjoying hobbies with friends we've never met.
I think it's also worth asking why people become isolated. For example, I see a lot of city folks who think "Just go to hobbyist events" is good advice to people who live rural or countryside where you can't find hobby groups on a whim. Some people really just don't know where they can make connections, full stop, without feeling like they're harassing strangers on the street.

I would say from my bias that it is easier to make connections in rural rather than urban IRL. it maybe true that it is hard to find the hobby group if it is a niche thing but you know and wave at your neighbors. you may not find the drone club but you will find the gearheads and electric tinkers club. As far as the wave off the problem it seem that the people that complain take no action to correct it. You can't force an adult to get off the net and touch grass. Lastly people isolate because no one wants to be judged but many times people make mountains out of molehills and to stop it you need to drop the rose colored glasses and just face the world with all the warts and roses.

I think more of that is the way reporting and information is given. Most people don't have the time to watch the full original source and get all the context nor will they have the understanding of certain subjects to get it all. So they resort to people who give clips and clever phrasing to lean things to one side or the other. They keep doing that and once someone has a bias they hardlt have to try. They take everything the worst way they can take it and have no desire to seek understanding. And when two people with opposing sets of information and biases clash, its just war.
For example the reporting on what trump recently said about black voters is a great example of this. News unfavorable to him focuses on the backlash and impact on him with black voters but not any of the counter stances on whether it is warranted (And even if it was as was the case with people saying vaccines caused autism, they often have people who are incompetent or look bad to defend it. Which btw was true as there were issues causing higher rates of autism and they changed them to fix it, however its never been properly addressed and thus both the people who were right and those who are wrong often lack the full story. It happened but its resolved now). Most news in general have not be following his trials in a comprehensive manner beyond verdicts and what he is being taken to court over. However for those favorable they have had more on what makes them unfair to trump. Placing it as political prosecution instead of anything he legitimately did wrong. And with this prior context even without having someone explain it, most consumers of those media channels would be thinking well of course they are treating him unfavorably in court just because he's trump. And he's saying the justice system is flawed and going after him unfairly like many black people have faced, simply because who they are. But no side will bother to hear the other out do to their biases.
However what makes this even worse is when the game of telephone gets going and not even the depiction of the clips people saw are conveyed with accuracy. Instead they just end up running with narratives from talk show hosts.
But even if people did engage with the related source content in full, people may not be able to fully understand the nature of it all due to not being knowledgable on important subjects.
In the end most people pick teams and cease to think for themselves because they bought into the omissions and never looked into the full sources themselves.

  • @julius-stark

So I'm not nor have I used an "AI girlfriend" or whatever, but I'm a writer so I like to research these topics, as well as love movies like Her, Blade Runner 2049, Ex Machina etc. I think the appeal of AI girlfriends for guys (because I hear women are using AI boyfriends but society doesn't feel threatened by that so who cares?), is that you have the semblance of a woman tell you that she loves you and cares about you, because our society for the past 70+ years have conditioned women to see men as predators/oppressors/misogynists/villains so that they are incredibly resistant to not only express love and kindness to a man, but doing so will result in those women being bullied by the majority of women to stop doing it.
AI girlfriends are just a result of the greater societal divide between men and women (specifically dividing women from men). It is much easier for the average woman to get love and attention from multiple men (even if she doesn't appreciate it) than it is for even an above average man to get love and attention from one woman. AI girlfriends are simply filling an ever widening intimacy gap created and perpetuated by our society.
Imagine if they create Joi from Blade Runner 2049 where you have a customizable holographic projection of a cute girl whom you can talk to and interact with in all but physical ways, or if the love doll technology becomes affordable so that any guy can get one. It will me a wrap for large swaths of dating culture. Why would a guy put up with a real woman who can lie/cheat/swindle/leave you vs a robot or AI generated woman who is loyal, who loves you, who will never betray you, and isn't going to nag or start fights with you all the time? I certainly see the appeal even if I could never bring myself to indulge in such a device.

As a person who grew up adoring Star Trek, what you describe as the 'Star Trek Lie' truly breaks my heart, because I 100% believed it... and I still do. I think humanity, were we to follow the call of our better nature, could absolutely build a society that harmonious. There are countries today which, while still faaaar from perfect, are a lot closer to that ideal than the USA, UK or Australia.
Instead, we allow the worst of our nature to fuel and control us. We fall to greed, fall to selfishness, to bitterness and hatred. We have enough resources on this planet to feed and house every human in a sustainable way, but we allow those resources to be hoarded by metaphorical dragons at the top of the economic pile. Our societies are set up to benefit those dragons at the expense of the common person.
They sit back and watch us squabble about how all of this is the fault of feminism, or patriarchy, immigration, technology, or whatever else. They watch us fight over scraps, angry that the 'wrong' people are being hired to spend their lives slaving away for the privilege of keeping a roof over their heads and food on the table.
We can do better. Not just for one gender, or one race. We have the means to create a world where EVERY individual can be free to pursue their highest calling, be that an artist, a builder, a mother, a father, a gardener, or an engineer.
But we don't. We are slaves to the worst of ourselves, those evolutionary hangover traits of having once been tribal apes. We must instead be champions of what we can become - that steady expansion of empathy, love and kinship from tribe in the prehistoric, to town at the dawn of agriculture, to nation in the industrial age, to globe.
THAT is what makes us Humanity.

AI girlfriends are the solution not the problem.
The problem are the people trying to stop this. The annoyance are the people looking at corporate products and acting like it's gonna stay this way, wile also ignoring or downplaying that these para-social relationships existed for years with real women. Now they're threatened to go out of business, which is a good thing.
Then conflating "loneliness" with being alone and "shut-ins" and also somehow the solution for it. The catastrophe maybe starts for some people now, it was going on for quite some time.
In reality, the wave of Millennial women finding out that they wont find anyone is only starting. While GenX childless single women are currently in the age where they start loosing their parents and then be really alone. This is already set up, it already happened. The culture of the last few decades did this.

Well said. Women are biologically only interested in the top 10 percent of men. For most men, no matter how many decades they spend at the gym, on their careers, or "self improving" they will never be able to date even a woman they are mildly attracted to.
And those men who can date women they find attractive, are treated like disposable dirt most of the time, because they are completely replaceable. Any woman, no matter how little she takes care of herself, can go online and have hundreds of guys to choose from instantly.
Men NEED other options. And Women NEED competition.

I listened to a great podcast a while back with a very well seasoned psychologist who breaks down why depression/suicide rates are climbing so much higher in girls than in boys. It isn't so much the body image stuff (that plays a part though) but the way male and female minds function. Male brains are predisposed to develop through competition and goal-based events. For example, the male brain gets just as much satisfaction from playing sports physically as it does squadding up with the boys for a night of gaming because in the latter, you're still communicating and hunting down other groups of boys to kill them (virtually). Female brains, however, thrive from immediate connection and feedback. Hence why girls grew up playing hopscotch, jump rope, patty cake, etc. Games that encourage interaction and teamwork but don't really have a win/lose state. Even talking on the phone scratches this itch for girls, as it's happening in real time so the brain gets the satisfying interaction feedback. However, female brains DO NOT receive this growth or satisfaction from delayed feedback communication methods. Texting, commenting on social media, etc. do not satisfy the emotional connection desire in the female brain. As society drifts further away from direct emotional connection and more toward delayed response communication, young female brains are getting more starved of what they need to develop. Meanwhile, male brains are still able to satisfy their development requirements through virtual methods.
It's interesting that the depression plaguing young girls is quite literally a byproduct of their brains being starved of the emotional connection they evolved to desire. The body image and AI and all of that compounds the issue, but the core problem is little girls are becoming more and more emotionally starved and the methods they have for connecting with each other don't feed them. They're desperately drinking water than does not hydrate them and not understanding why.

Wow! So true. As a girl who grew up (in their teens) online mostly playing with guys I had this topic very often.
I loved the community and talking to each other and I dont mind if I ever won or not. It was about spending time with friends. During Covid I had no other alternative than doing that online, and I always knew it wasn’t enough and that it could never replace a hug from a friend or a day with them in nature.
And that’s what I really recognise today. Even if you have online friends and one friend in real life, it’s not enough to feel connected, especially for women. Being in a group with closed friends that we can rely on was always important in our evolution.
It seems like everything is so artificial and I don’t know any women that are happy about it. It’s so hard to make new friends though because people seem to be so addicted to scrolling and stuff that they’d rather spend their evenings watching Netflix and TikTok’s instead of going outside or having a picnic.

The big problem with AI and it's current progression is it's moving out from being an "assistive tool" and into a physical entity replacement. When you read up about a lot of those dystopian stories/games/books, they often talk about how "AI just took everything over", culminating in the collapse of society.
If we're already getting to the point where we have "politician bots", how long will it take before people start relegating everything political/management/administrative to AI?
I'm a bit biased being an software engineer, but the idea of replacing the workforce of people who can create the necessary framework to develop machine learning and etc, leaving only software to code more software, sounds like a great plan to eventually end up having tech people no longer know how to use or fix.
Don't get me wrong, AI assistance is a powerful tool, but it taking completely over leads to fun cases like what happened with Air Canada's chatbot, giving out erroneous info to passengers.

Alicia fumbled her vocal notes, witnessed and heard by millions, recorded by thousands yet all versions of the original are being scrubbed and replaced. There are no notes in the video information to inform you that AI was used, or even that the footage has been altered.
Truthstream Media's recent video explains it better than I can, so worth checking out. And this video perfectly connects to what they are trying to warn us about. Imagine real-time editing of news reporting...soon we will no longer be able to trust that which we have not witnessed with our own eyes, and a great persecution of those who question the narratives will take place but any evidence of the persecutions will be conveniently edited out.

As a research scientist working on generative models. I can say this is only the tip of the iceberg. While people mostly hear about malicious use of AI, there is definitely a place for it for the greater good. But for now people are mostly focusing on developing generative model with fewer research focusing on detection. AI can definitely be useful to remove bias in data use to train classifier (computer vision and medical imaging) etc. There is also research to generate 3D environments rather than 2D videos so video games will probably soon rely on AI to generate hyper realistic 3D environments (neural radiance fields and diffusion models have started dabbling into it).

A year ago, when this technology was worse, My parents got a call that my sister had been kidnapped with her screaming in the background to do it or she'll die, And the caller told them to wire him $5,000 or she die.
Her voice was completely AI spoofed she was at a convenience store 20 minutes away perfectly fine.
But they scrambled and were terrified, probably los t years off their lives

Loneliness is evidence of boredom, not depression. Depression arises when the community of healers avoid healing for profit over people. Boredom isn't possible if you're purpose driven. Loneliness is being overwhelmed and unable to choose purpose among all choices. Loneliness is not the self. Loneliness is ego-awareness.

My generation, Gen X, is the last generation to reach adulthood without the internet. I remember the last remaining days when people had true interactions with each other and I would love to have that back more than anyone could possibly know.
People are not lonely and depressed because of a synthetic. It's because humans by nature are gregarious, and without human to human interaction the heart and soul grow weak. AI girlfriends and other artificial means of connections exist because people no longer know how to connect. They take for granted just how much in-person eye to eye contact means and does. Using the five senses to engage with someone else. It's the only way.
There's only way to get it back, and you know what the answer to that is.

One positive I have found is in coding: With copilot, code quality features like type guards and proper error propagation are getting done now that copilot will do it for the coder too busy. This saves times in debugging.

Sometimes I scoff at the idea of how silly it sounds to think it could replace humans but then on the flip side, like you said, it only gets better from here, which is terrifying. The fact that it's as passable as it is at the worst it's gonna be that can only get worst because even incremental changes that make it more acceptable can scale out of hand extremely quickly. The internet isn't that old and look at the rate we already get information, you want to take a machine algorithm pump it full of petabytes and more of data as it only gets better and gets more access into territory literally none of us know is very very terrifying and no one is actually seeming to be worried enough. I am not saying it's not a good tool, like for medicine, construction infrastructure, air traffic management etc can assist people into making stronger decisive decisions that can safe real lives it's the balance of analog and digital that will make advancements. Example it's good if Nasa can use it for mission safety but it should be verified by humans. But to do that there must be infrastructure in place to keep that scale from just going out of hand you know.

I'm just waiting for nature to heal itself. We can't keep this ball in the air forever.
