***** Its not about what year it is, I mean I'm using a TV thats made in 1973 my computer is from 2005, as long as it works fine still then why get something new? plus he's thinking of a creative way to reuse those Pentium II heatsinks
***** My channel is more or less based on retro technology, hence why I use the old iBook. I actually ordered the Pentium II heatsinks from ebay because they were the perfect size for the job.
Timelord_no_1 - Gaming and Tech Everything you've said is perfectly true, but has *nothing to do with* whether or not one nukes a (pre-cooked and flash frozen) Lean Cuisine for "4 minutes and then eats it" or "8 minutes, cools it down some, and *then* eats it".
This is a hilariously geeky approach to solving this sort of problem. I love it. I would like to see a follow-up where you've put some sort of sensor in to stop the fans when it reaches best temperature and sound a little alarm or buzzer to let you know that it is done.
"Now it's too cold." -back in the microwave. "Shit, now it's too hot." -Back on the cooler. you've created a never-ending loop, were i never get to eat.
It also works in reverse..if you have something that is frozen and you need to thaw it quickly, the heatsinks will sink cold away just as efficiently as they handle heat
Just to clarify something that triggers me despite getting what you mean: cold doesn't move anywhere, heat moves from hotter to colder surface/matter. Cold is just lower temperature than what you are comparing the cold thing to, so the heatsinks actually heat up the cold stuff, and the air heats the cold heatsinks. Cold and warm/hot are just comparisons, always need a reference. Heat is what moves and changes the temperature (let's not yet enter into gases and pressure differences). There, I can sleep at night now. I feel relieved...
Microwaves do not heat evenly, turning disks inside rotating the food helps balance this out, but much of the design of frozen dinners is to let them set at rather hot temps, for at least that first minuet or two so that the heat evens out. So it might be best to leave it in the microwave and cool it down after that time or you might start running into cold spots in your food.
+TheHomicidalTendency - I would agree with something that is sort of solid like a big piece of chicken or fish or something. But any sort of meal that is lots of stuff in liquid that gets stirred somewhere in the process (like the one I showed) does tend to cook pretty evenly. I actually verified that with my thermometer. I could only find about 10 degrees difference in any part of the meal.
The 8-Bit Guy have you considered doing other builds similar to this, along with your usual videos as they are quite informative and well presented. As of recently I actually purchased a 2006 MacBook running a core duo processor and maxed out at 2GB of ram and a 1TB hard drive. I've been seeing on RUclips here that it's possible to upgrade the OS to el captain. I thought this could be a possible video idea as a update to the original video you made on this machine.
Pro-tip, because this does not use any sort of phase change or peltier technology, it can also be used for thawing frozen things. I'd say that would be a perfect way to thaw a steak you were interested in throwing on the grill :). I'd like to see you test that sometime if you're up to it (hope you didn't point this out somewhere else and I overlook it). Perhaps more obvious, but just as neat, this can also be used to quickly freeze things by placing the whole unit in the freezer and running it, and it can also be used to cool something down very quickly in the fridge using in the same manner. Passive "cooling" has tons of untapped potential in my opinion.
40° is like lukewarm lol. like 50-60° is when its starts to hurt (and around the temperature I shower). only because the food is that warm it doesnt mean it raises your body temperature to 40°C that would indeed be very harmfull
Your next challenge 8-bit Guy, is to see if you can sufficiently cook/heat up a meal using the heat from a CPU? Wonder how long that one would take ? LOL
+John Richardson Probably way too long (if at all). Your average microwave produces 700 W of microwave power. Your average Pentium 2 dissipates 20W in heat. It's like taking a low-power light bulb and trying to cook with it.

I wonder if putting the food on the heat sinks w/o the fan would speed up cooling vs the counter top...I know it wouldn't as fast as a fan system, but I'm sure it would cool down more in 7 minutes
DvdXploitr Actually, I tried that but did not include it in the video. The heatsinks by themsleves did make a significant cooling effect. But the heatsinks got very hot, around 100-120 degrees and stayed that way since there was no fan to remove the heat.
