    I know this was made awhile back. But when you said use oil and drive down a dusty road. That reminded me of back in the late 60s and early 70s. My family owned property near a river why back in the woods. Every time we hired an oil or tar truck to oil the road all the people living in the area would drive up and down the road to undercoat there cars.Thanks for the video enjoyed it.

    Take it from a professional bodyman. (48 years experience) when you get your new truck, remove all plastic plugs from backside of rockers and the ones on the outer wheel housing. They are put there by the manufacturer to promote rusting, how else can they sell parts?

    I just made this repair to my 06 Dakota. It rusted out due its plastic bedliner locking in moisture around the wheel housing and lip. The truck had been repainted and the bed had been half-assed repaired last year before I bought it. I knew it was going to need to be fixed within a year, because I have seen enough bondo packed into rust holes in my life on used vehicles. That's OK because I like doing metal and body work. I did the repair in the same manner as he did. I cut out the rot with a cut off wheel. The edge/lip of the wheel housing was rotted out like this truck in the video. I rebuilt the housing before tacking on the exterior repair panel, using scraps of sheet metal I had lying around. I bought a pre-formed repair panel like the one shown in the video off of eBay. I cut the repair panel down to size and slipped the new panel under the sheet metal of the bed, which was the opposite of how he did it. I don't have a mig, so had to braze the new metal in, which causes more heat distortion than a mig welder would. Use a mig if you can afford a decent one and be sure it isn't a cheap $99 model. After the exterior panel was tacked in numerous places, I started the body work. I used three different fillers. First I used a filler impregnated with aluminum (All-metal is one brand of this type of filler) to fill in the space between the new exterior patch and the original sheet metal of the bed. It makes a very strong bond that won't crack with time like regular filler might. Then I went over it with Feather lite filler and for the top coat of filler I used Pink Icing brand filler. The repair was strong and it will last for years if you take care and wash the area on a regular basis. I drilled a few tiny holes in the bedliner around the wheel housing in order to vent it a little in the future and let moisture out. This was a decent repair job shown on the video for an older truck. It does prolong the vehicle's life and looks. A lot of smaller body shops in more rural areas will charge $2500-$3000 for this repair. Its worth it, if the truck still runs good and you don't want to buy another one. The Dakota has only 116K miles on it and it runs really well and is a 4X4 V8 model on top of it. Thanks for making the video!

    Folks - DO not do this - this is NOT how to repair this type of damage properly. The panel should be fully welded in, ground smooth then light coats of filler.... If you are doing repairs - do them the right way first.....

    Dang dude I wish I had all the resources you had. If I were your little kid in like 10 years I'd be set! I'd love to learn how to do all this stuff and get experience I'm good enough at welding but don't have a personal welder or the money or the resources to do any of this. Being 17 with a father that would rather take everything to a shop than do it yourself kind of sucks.

      Take it from a 45 year old who was right where you are at 17. My dad was/is about as handy mechanically as a 12 yr old girl. The advantage you have is RUclips, and great guys like Sean to learn from. I had to visit the library and buy Chilton's manuals.
      My best advice, do like I did... use every extra penny to buy tools. Start with your basics: screwdrivers (buy a "6 in 1" and for the most part you will only need the one), pliers, a socket set, and some combination wrenches.
      Buy the cheap stuff if that's all you can afford at first. Harbor Freight is a great place for this.
      And keep watching the Hack n Pack shop.

    So this is a 2001 truck, with the video recorded in 2012? GMC should be ashamed of themselves. As you stated, 10 years old and 30,000$ new. Not even worth 500$. Wheel arches gone, cab corners gone, rockers gone, likely the floor and brake lines and every other small undercarriage component is corroded too.

    • @SianaGearz
      @SianaGearz 9 лет назад +1

      LakeNipissing GMC would look at a 2001 Mercedes and no longer be ashamed of themselves. A lot of cars by many companies from the late 90ies - early 2000s were rust magnets, regardless of the price bracket.
      That were the times where companies realized they cannot make the cars too good, else people will buy one car and keep it for 20 years - where's the profit in that? Also they had a lot of new engineering constraints, at least here in EU. The cost pressure rose very sharply, the weight had to go down, because fuel economy, and at the same time, the crash test ratings had to go up. A lot of structurally new models had to be conceived in a short time which lead to teething design mishaps which allowed water to go in but not ever drain out, and the material got worse because they had to use much less steel and less zinc. Newly taped out factories got microscopically pre-zinked sheets for cost saving, instead of sealing the whole chassis after welding it.

    • @MrRahimhosein
      @MrRahimhosein 9 лет назад

      My GMC Sierra is 12 years old and rust free. Its all how you take care of the vehicle. You need to clean it. by the way manufacturers don't make vehicles to last forever. If they did people would keep them forever and they would go out of business. Look at the price of a BMW, i have seen many rusted bmws. I used to be a technician for BMW them moved to General motors. The price of a BMW should mean they never rust, right.

    • @Tbolt1000TForLife
      @Tbolt1000TForLife 9 лет назад

      +LakeNipissing I know right? You think they'd be better at solving rust problems by then, and still today. Now I see 2007 and up(GMT-900) Silverado's and Sierra's with rust in some spots, it's pathetic. Their just too fucking cheap to properly rust proof vehicles.

      +SUV Man I agree sure maintenance is part of it but honestly it could be a very small part. I live in the same area this truck is from i got a car from florida had it rust proofed from ziebarts and at the end of its life with barely any car washes ever (it was a convertible that leaked). when it finally went to the junkyard it had not one spot of rust. why cant for 30k they add that kind of protection and a little extra paint.

    Living in NY I bought a 98 s10 in 2009 and it had some rust coming through the paint in the wheel wells and the rockers but looked good washed up. 5 years later the box was literally falling off the truck and the rockers, front bumper, fenders were turning into swiss cheese. It looked so bad I had to let her go even though it still was a reliable vehicle.
    I looked into fixing the rust early on but the truth was it was already too far gone when I got it. It didn't look it from the outside but the inside was pure rot.

      SEE A LOT OF THESE TRUCKS WITH SEVERE RUST SOME ARE LIKE 4-5 YRS OLD AND ALREADY FALLING APART

    • @demort71

      Those are probably Toyota SUVs and trucks that are 4-5 years old and rusted all to hell. That is what happens when your island has to rinse their steel with salt water because fresh water is too expensive! I don't notice the domestic made trucks in the Midwest rusted out and being only 5 years old. Some people don't believe in waxing or washing their vehicles either. Also sheet metal used in new vehicle production is a lighter gauge than what they used in earlier decades. Once the paint is chipped, it doesn't take long for the corrosion to eat through it. That is another problem with rust out.

      That's funny, you can open the tap and get fresh water, but you'd have to transport seawater over in order to get your parts near that...
      Really makes you think.

    GM should really issue a recall, or maybe the FTC should get on them. No reason that trucks that are less than 15 years old should be rusted like this, I've seen 2008's with rusty fenders. It's like they used the cheapest Chinese steel to assemble these vehicles.

    "This is a 10 year old truck, guys!". For me, I am just disappointed in GM. This kind of crap has been going on with fleetside beds for decades. You'd think after all this coating technology available that the company can stop this from happening on their trucks. And always the rockers under the extended cab. My god, at least try to use stainless sheet down there!

      It`s not that the body filler or metal is gonna cost more, but the time, other materials and welding wire and gas is a killer.

    He didn't need to say that he loves Chevy for me to know that. Some people you can just tell right off the bat what kind of people they are and what they drive based on their vocabulary and other tells. It was obvious after a few seconds of watching for me to know he likes Chevy; bottom feeders always do. Chevrolets are for the lowest common denominators of society.
