Unfortunately I won't be seeing you in Reckoning (on account of being on the other end of the world), but I really like the starter bag concept. I'm kinda working on something like that, but not for a specific event. It's more like an event or camping trip bug-out-bag where I can have the essentials always ready and don't need to frantically search for that one thing that I may need as I'm about to leave the house...
If you can swing it in years going forward, we always welcome folks from around the world! We have a few people from Europe who have expressed interest in the game.
The best starter kit I ever saw for a larp (sold by the larp itself using donated materials) was so simple yet efficient for getting a new player going:
- Cheap belt
- 2 pocket pouch
- 2-color tabard (could pick from a bunch of choices that volunteers had donated)
- Sword ring (for holding your boffer).
Bam, $10 (mind you this was over 20 years ago).
All a new player needed was to bring some unobtrusive clothes to wear underneath the tabard, then belt it off, and stick a borrowed weapon in the sword ring.
It was such a relief for new players that they didn't have to invest a ton a money up front if they weren't 100% sure about the game yet.
Anyway, just my two copper.
That's a pretty good idea for years going forward!
We have lots of great plans for next year! Unfortunately with the turnover there just wasn't enough time for some things. If you join our community discord we always welcome input like this from our players!
Oh we have MANY ideas of how to expand the Starter Package! I image if we did, we would offer different add-ons like a costuming add-on (stuff like the belt, sword ring, tabard). Level up your package... if you will. We actually priced out an feasting kit add on with plates, a mug, utensils, water carrier, etc, but decided against it for the first time offering anything.

Shame I'm not In the area for reckoning, but I'm starting my barbarian war belt this weekend for my new larp character. I'm going for a monster slayer look mixed with a samurai feel
We need something like spy camera footage. It would be super fun to see y’all actually running the stall
We will have several photographers and a videographer at the event this year so you can be sure you'll see them at least a little bit in videos after the event!

No rush! Tickets are open until May 17th, but the earlier you buy tickets, the more of that money is able to be funneled back into the creation of the game!

That rules me out.

I doubt I will make it to reckoning. The cost of starting up combined with transportation work against me. However generally support efforts to create events like this. What lead to the new management? It seemed from your videos and a couple of others that things were going good.

Oh that's so cool. I would love to go because this year it's in our state. But it's so expensive and I've never Larped before so unfortunately I'll have to sit this one out.
Not going to lie I wish I had the funds to go to Rekoning. Maybe next year. I am making my armor and other things for it.

Having heard a lot of…not-great criticisms about Reckoning’s old management, I really hope the new team takes it to heart and allows this opportunity to be a fresh start for untapped potential.
So far the new staff has been a pleasure to work with. They are genuinely putting in the effort to make the game as good as it can be. We like to think of it as a new game, at this point, with all the changes in both mechanics and the tone of the people running it. Very excited to see how it turns out the first year and how it grows from there!!
Can you upgrade Garret fully. Give him some body armour (Nils Beardfoot has some good videos on leather armour). And maybe a small survival kit. He is a ranger after all

It's likely a cool project, but if you look around at revolutionary war and civil war suppliers you can often find them for very low cost.

I so wish I could do this. I feel like reckoning is probably not the best choice for a first larp though 🤣 just because their standards for immersion and quality are pretty high. So excited to see the aftermath of it though!
I don't think you're giving yourself enough credit! It is very easy to make a good simple kit, and the players at Reckoning can definitely help get you started!
I agree with Auroreanic! Madi started with very little besides a trip to the local thrift store and a dream when we first went! The Reckoning discord is full of great people who love to help people with that exact problem, you should check it out!

Not saying dont give it a shot, but usually "new ownership" is just a way to wash out all critisism from the previous event. At least where I work, the real owner is always the same, but every few years they just pay someone to be the new face and "owner" to avoid legal issues.
Nah. This was a straight up change of owner. It was actually bought and is being run by people who were players in the game. They are working SUPER hard to make sure it is a good experience and a better game.

There were a lot of hurdles with the turnover but Reckoning is a brand new beast this year! She certainly won't be perfect but we're gonna give it our all with the new team. Five individuals who were NPCs last year were promoted to full staff and the number of full time staff has grown from just 3 to almost 20. The executive leadership are also all brand new, just a group of players who felt that Reckoning deserved our best shot!

Unfortunately the event could not be hosted at either of the same sites from the past two years which meant a lot of legwork just to find a venue to host us! There are a lot of very specific requirements to host an event like this.

With a "missing stair" player I can't stand being so involved with the staff of this event and some problematic cultural issues that staff is far too defensive about, I'll be skipping this event for now. Hope you guys have fun this year.
If players have issues with specific people or other things in our community we always welcome hearing their concerns!
@@ReckoningLARP welcome hearing and appropriately responding are two different things. Having a single player that makes members of your community not want to participate in your community discord to avoid combative harassment and apparently turning a blind eye to it repeatedly due to them being married to a staff member isn't a good look. Also, when someone pointed out some potentially offensive middle eastern stereotypes or religious cultural problems, they were banned when they felt they weren't being heard, the reason give, combative harassment. Which is not great. I don't expect the LARP to change, hypocrisy will happen and the world keeps spinning. I just choose to not participate, which is unfortunate, because most of the community is pretty awesome and the original idea from the game's no longer involved creator is what sold me on it.
@@AdamUnpronounceable Due to our policy of only discussing the status of certain players, with that player, we cannot specifically comment on this. However, both of the situations you have referred to are far more complicated than made to seem here.

Any chances of adding a section to your new site that lists LARPs around the country? A place where people who can't make it to Reckoning can go to find info about LARPs in their area.
