So glad I saw this video. I constantly struggle with bringing my rigs out in public. I usually have my son with me, and he deflects any potentially negative attention because it looks like I’m just playing RC trucks with my son, or at least that’s how I imagine others perceive it. But when I go out by myself in populated places I get super anxious. Over the summer I decided that I would go out and have fun and not care what people thought. I went to a local park on a sunny summer Sunday. The place was packed with people. But I went ahead anyway and had really positive interactions. So much so that I almost wanted people to stop asking me questions or engaging because I couldn’t get any crawling done 😆 Since then, I’ve experienced mostly similar reactions. People are genuinely curious or apathetic. I think a lot has to do with your external presentation. If you acknowledge them, smile, say hello, they reciprocate positive feedback. Hiding away or deliberately avoiding interactions will cast a shadow over the entire experience and attract negative attention. In the end, just be you and have fun. Life is too short to take ourselves too seriously.
Thanks for your comment, this video and all y’all’s responses has definitely given me more confidence to crawl around people. Cause a lot of times if I have a predetermined trail I want to take but there are people by it, then I’ll go to a different one. So ima try and not do that!
Don't worry about what other people think, most people I meet actually like and enjoy watching my rc's. Talk with them and maybe you'll get to introduce them into our hobby. Great area for filming, love the views
Just watched a video from Holmes hobby about proper etiquette at parks and stuff. This sort of stuff is needed so people are aware of others and staying positive
My experience is about the same as yours. Most people are eithet really curious or not interested. I only ever had one experiece with cranky lady. She was walking her dog off leash, in this area leashes are required. I was climbing on a rock, she was walking toward the spot i was at. She started yelling at me that my toy was going to scare her dog. The dog ran right up to me and i gave him a pet on the head. The dog was fine, it never barked or anything, the lady did the barking. It was funny. Great vid!##👍👍👍
I was bringing my rigs out to the rocks near the bay where I used to live for a while, and it did feel weird at first, because it was pretty urban, but most people just looked and smiled, but a few even stopped to ask about it, and I even had a group come and ask if they could record the rig climbing on the rocks because they thought it was cool. In the end if you're just having some fun and not bothering anyone, I think it's good attention on the hobby, and the more they see that the more it will just be like someone riding a bike (except we have super cool bikes that can climb things that seem impossible)
Out of the 10 times I've come across people it's been very pleasant interactions. I had a few ladies take pictures of the my truck just below the top of a pretty steep climb but only after asking if they could first. Then I had a couple ask what it cost to get started.
I just bought a trx4 2021 bronco at Rocktober. While walking back to the car with it ahead of me and my buddy with his 10.3 gladiator, a woman in 40 feet away in the parking lot looked over and busted out laughing really loud.
@@raffyturc I wouldn’t go quite that far. I don’t think she intended for us to hear her, but she also didn’t care. She can laugh all she wants as long as she doesn’t cause us any trouble.
Gotta tell them to get into it! Ya never know, they are probably thinking in the back of their head damn we should buy one of those💪🏻 I love driving mine out in Public show your build off!
i was doing some crawling on the side of a road , a rather portly gentleman on a bicycle rode past and laughed at me and said " ha ha ha now i have seen everything " and i replied to him " yeah a fat ass on a push bike in lycra " he turned his head back forward and rode off up the hill with an attitude adjustment of the highest order ....other than that one guy everyone loves seeing a rc doing crazy things ..
Everyone is always amazed. They wanna know where I got it, how long does it run, is there anyone else in the area that goes. I always refer them to my local hobby shop corky's. The local guys and gals usually do a weekly crawl when the weather's nice, we've had a group of about 20 people go on a single crawl before.
its a good and fun form of exercise actually. man, wish we had those areas here. forget those staring eyes. they just accept the fact of being old and not have fun.
I've never had a negative interaction out on the trail. I have found that people tend to be more interested in the scale trucks than the dedicated buggys and truggys.
most everyone ive always ran into thinks its cool as hell, and want to know more about it. the more people youre with, the better the reaction generally, i look like less of a weirdo when surrounded by other weirdos LOL. there are always those few that think its silly (especially if i have my camera out too, then it gets more silly to them), but i pay no mind to them. my favorite thing to say is "the only different between men and boys is the price of their toys" 🤣 always get asked what it costs too, but i never put an actual number on it, as people then assume it actually costs that much, and i just say "it costs exactly as much as you spend" for the most part, as theres an rc for almost any budget. easy to scare someone away with a pricetag!
Haha that’s very true! I will usually give em a entry price, like a Everest 10 and then tell em they can go as high as they want from there! I haven’t done a whole lot of crawling in big groups. Normally just 2 at most.
I get the most confusion from people when I take out my CR18P rockvan. It just looks like a little on road model van, not a rock crawler. It’s a lot of fun to drive, though, and really capable for its looks. I’ve just moved the battery forward on it and 4 linked the front.
Like others have said most people really like our trucks. If there are kids they really want to know about them. One guy commented that he didn't think electric powered vehicles were allowed on the trail...not sure if he was being sarcastic or not. He seemed annoyed that they were making noise on the trail though. Oh well.
that’s an epic capra . as for people . well i reckon i’ve sold a couple of rc cars y being out . given old peoples dogs exercise 😂 one time i was asked to run it by a dog training so it could get socialised. most the time i’ll just chat tbh . oh snd of course you always get the bloke…. ‘is it a nitro ? how fast is it ? ‘ 😂😂😂
I try to avoid it because as a grown (well rather getting old) man playing with a rc car might be considered silly, i try to got to my favourite spots at times when there are no people around, morning, late afternoon, also still looking for sth. thats more remote.
It's an unusual hobby, based on sophisticated versions of what, to most people, look just like a child's toy. Without familiarity, most will look at a (mostly middle-aged) man playing with a toy, and wonder what's wrong with them. Not much different than if you were out there with dino figurines, or bouncing around on a pogo stick. If RC was in most parks and on TV, perceptions would change. By going out and having good interactions, you're improving things, spreading awareness. That's cool. I do notice that much of the crawler community is dressed in all black, has tats with dark themes, and goes out of their way to look hard and dangerous. By all means, you be you, but when mainstream folks see people trying to look dangerous, they receive the message. Many will avoid, rather than engage, and they may get the impression that it's not a hobby for them or their kids.
Its a pretty wild that your judging people by the way the look and telling them its their fault for people not getting into RC.. I figured by this point in time a dumb idea like that wouldn't be so prevalent but I guess not. Half of the tatted dues I drive with have their kids with them or are just some of the nicest people Ive met. If you're too afraid to introduce yourself to people based on the way they look then thats your problem for being soft and uneducated.
Yeah some people definitely just see it as toys. (That’s how my coworkers see it) but for sure, just having conversations with people changes that fast!
Well, the few times I have been crawling on the Red Rocks with people there had no problems people ask about the RC, tell them it's a fun hobby and sent them to SkyRc. One lady told me be careful. I'm not a people person. And thank you for pickup the trash we pick up trash all the time we use the land we need to take care of it. Need to put dig in my Capra are you running the stock trans? Stay safe my rc friend.
Haha I’ve sent a few people that way as well. Yep stock trans. I really like dig. It’s quite useful. This video works as a good show case of the perks of dig.
Yes I enjoy some of the az rest area's on i 40 and I 10. Mosty polite conversation and always how much dose it cost. The at least someone b4 its over will say cool rig, my freind has a gas one. 😊😮😂😅😅😅
Otherwise I usually get a split between people who know nothing and think it’s fascinating and people who used to crawl down at foto and stopped doing it once they started kicking us out. Apparently there is an overlap between the local fishing and crawling community.
At the moment it is unclear if we are allowed down there. Management was replaced and the new management used to kick us out claiming that we were operating “motorized vehicles”, which is a legal definition that these toys don’t fit. Someone supposedly talked to them and now we know nothing because they never responded to him.
So glad I saw this video. I constantly struggle with bringing my rigs out in public.
