See what happens when you flat tow a vehicle in park 🚙

- Most Jeep wrangler models allow you to flat tow without accruing miles or having to worry about damaging the drive train.
💪 We use the BlueOx heavy duty tow bar.
Flat towing is much easier for us than dealing with a trailer since we move locations often in our RV.

May not be miles on the odometer but is gonna still be putting miles on all them bearings and differentials. Good job.
@One so more wear on all the moving components when the car isn't actually being driven
@One do you even know how a car works? Maybe it won't be wearing the engine and trans down but the suspension, bearings, differentials and more will still all be wearing down as if they're driving it, putting the transfer case in neutral doesn't disconnect everything
That also happens when you have your vehicle towed if you have a mechanical problem if it's not on a flatbed, the engine is the expensive part that goes along with the transmission you protect those everything else is relatively cheap to replace and throughout the normal life of a vehicle would probably wear out before the engine and transmission
@One damn you really showed me by telling me to read the manual, what an argument
dumbest argument ive ever heard… no shit the car parts are getting miles wtf you gonna do? it makes no difference, besides less wear on the engine cuz its not on…

It seems most people in this comment section aren't aware the transfer case is behind the transmission, so if the transfer case is in neutral the transmission isn't spinning
Wait what? So If trans doesn't spin when in neutral, then how is it still spinning your driveshaft
@@ryannance9673 you gotta think about it backwards, the input is on the axles, which in turn spins the driveshaft, which in turn spins the transfer case (which is in neutral) which is then connected to the transmission. But since the transfer case isn't spinning neither is the transmission.

Funny this video is posted at a time when odometer fraud is on the rise.
In this particular case, easier does mean better. 😀. Why bother with a trailer when Jeep fully supports and designed this vehicle to be flat towed? Yes, it wears the Jeep, but we do not want to have to deal with unloading, storing, maintaining a trailer. It’s much more convenient. 😀
A better SOLUTION might be to TOW the RV with the JEEP !

You know, I’m kind of a car nut… My brain is a useless encyclopedia of everything car. But I had no idea that if you move the transfer case into neutral, you could put the automatic transmission into park, and no miles would accrue on your odometer. You’ve just added something to my useless encyclopedia brain today, lol. Thank you.

So many people are taking their dumps on this post. If they ever sell the jeep, they should just advise someone about it, or even better, replace the bearings being worn before the sale. It's kinda like asking for idle time logs on a work truck

And it’s on 4 flats.
Sounds like a great way to spend a Saturday. 😀
Can you show a video while you towing it in a tight circle how do the jeep front wheels react do they turn?
The jeep wheels follow the RV. They turn in the direction of travel. Like most modern vehicles they have enough caster built in to the alignment- making them want to track in a straight line, but obviously capable of turning.
Passed u guys going from denver to kansas
Do you have a video on why you went from a class c to a class a?
The wheel bearings the carrier bearing on the drive shaft and the differentials etc are all still rotating not to mention the tires and suspension are still experiencing wear. If you can afford that RV just get a car trailer.
We follow the flat tow recommendations from Jeep. I agree that it sounds odd, but since jeep built it, I assume they know what is best! 😀
@@fuelyourwander what’s best is a trailer where nothing on the Jeep is rotating at highway speeds. But yes IF you’re going to flat tow I’m sure the manufacturer knows the best way to flat tow it.
@@joshuadavis1547
You still have wear on the trailer.
You have an up front cost of trailer.
Then the loss of fuel mileage from the extra weight, which also adds wear to the RV.
All that adds up to a higher cost then flat towing.
@@wantblackwolf what you missed is the mileage on the Jeeps odometer isn’t a true reflection of what the mileage on all the parts that are still rotating on the Jeep when being flat towed. So if I were to purchase that Jeep after them I would not be able to tell by looking at the odometer that I need to be either inspecting or servicing critical drivetrain components
@@joshuadavis1547 So you want them to spend more money to give you a better Jeep.
The engine and trans mileage is the only thing that matters. I don't buy used and expect the wear parts to be not worn.
It takes very little time to put a jack under the axle and raise so you can shake/spin the wheel to see what is bad. You are suppose to do an inspection before you buy a vehicle, it's not hard to spot worn parts. I always talk them down.
It would cost me less than $500 to replace the worst parts in my own garage. And I always give myself $1000 budget over the sell price for this. If you can't work on it yourself you shouldn't buy used from a private seller.

Always if you buy a car that was flat towed a decent amount the car or truck may not have many miles on motor and tranny but you may have to replace alot of steering and suspension parts just because the car says 100k miles or whatever doesn't mean the rest of the car only has 100k miles

2 questions,
1) does it get left running the entire time? At my old job moving trucks we had Ford rangers with a similar setup, they were manual so we were able to turn them off
2) Do you have faith in the safety cables to actually catch the jeep in the event of an emergency? Would chains work better?

How much was the tow bar and where did you get it?
We use the Blue OX tow bar system. We have used it on all of our RVs. The price varies depending on what you need (weight, type of vehicle, etc).
But can you explain how its turns ?
It just follows with the steering unlocked
How does the transmission stay lubricated while it's rolling? Doesn't that damage it? I'd rather save the transmission than the odometer
The transmission does not move in park- it prevents any spinning and heating up while not being cooled. It’s recommended by Jeep to flat tow this way. Transfer case in neutral, trans in park 👍
I love your Motor Hlmes it's beautiful

Wear out the transfer case vs transmission is common sense but sense isn't so common anymore. I disconnect the shafts so only the differentials and tires receive wear. Transfer cases aren't cheap either but transmission are expensive
Transfer cases do not have pumps and are only lubricated by the gear oil in the sump being picked up by spinning shafts and gears. How would this put any wear on the transfer case? 😀

You should have a trailer to carry the car, the trailer would have real lights working
Whats the deal with this. I don't live in the us so I've never seen anyone tow a car behind an rv. Is this jeep for getting groceries when the rv is parked? Here we just drive our cars.
Exactly. When we are parked in the RV, we still like to visit the grocery store, go to dinner, sightsee, etc. Much easier in the Jeep. 😀
Always curious about this. I don’t tow cars like this. Does the car being towed scrub the front tires when turning? Or does the steer tires naturally follow the line of the towing vehicle?

How are the back tires moving if the transmissions in park
Transfer case is in neutral which allows the tires to rotate freely. 😀
@@fuelyourwander putting the transfer case into neutral may allow the front tires to move but it has got nothing to do at all with the back tires once that transmission is in lock or Park whatever you want to call it them back tires are not going to move unless you take the drive shaft out
Well, we have towed it 10k miles this way with no issues. And fyi, transfer case is behind the transmission. So when the transfer case is in neutral it isolate all 4 wheels from the transmission. 😀

@@fuelyourwander Thank you for replying. I wondered about the front wheels turning. That sounds perfect! Greetings from U.K.
Easy way to kill a differential is to reverse feed it and starve it of oil. Made the mistake of flat towing an np435, and because those transmissions are fed from the flywheel side I completely destroyed a set of synchros.

Take notes, jeep with 50k miles could have 250k miles on the differentials and wheel bearings 😂 that ain’t right
If carried out properly, towing your car behind an RV should not damage your car in any significant way. Tens of thousands of travelers tow their cars each year. 😀
The one part that is still getting just as much wear or close to it is the tires, because there still spinning going down the road, not as much wear from taking off or turning hard but there still rolling down the pavement so there still getting some wear on them...... Why so harsh? These folks have the means, and seem to also have a handle on life. If they want to camp or live out of an rv, that's their life, you have no reason to be critical about it.
I have to ask is this rv park in Golden Colorado right off the freeway??
Why not toss it on a 16’ trailer? Be easier to back up and move around, no west snd tear in the Jeep, trailer tires are cheaper, just as easy to load, hell Jeeps don’t need ramps, if you ever need a trailer Jeep can tow it too or if something happens to the Jeep on a trail or road you can still get it home.
What's a "park" for a transmission? I only see 6 forward gears and a reverse for 2 of mine. I load either of them on the trailer anyways with a cover, don't want to put wears on moving parts.

Isn't the rear differential still spinning the drive shaft and the transmission
The transmission is not spinning because its in park and the transfer case is in neutral.
@Fuel Your Wander I know that the transfer case is in neutral but the rear differential still spins and therefore spins the drive shaft since the jeep is rear wheel drive if it's not in 4 wheel drive unless putting the transfer case in neutral just puts everything in neutral
The transfer case in neutral isolates everything else from the spinning driveshaft. So only the driveshafts and diffs spin.
What's that song called that song is awesome
You have to flat tow in park. If you leave the transmission in neutral you break the transmission.
How?
@@singamajigy my guess is neutral on the transfer case isn’t enough of a neutral to not spin the transmission output shaft. And since the pump is on the input side damage can occur to the transmission
I would trailer it if was going all over the USA. Save on some wheel bearings and tires. Imo
Trailers need tires and wheel bearings....
Regardless of how you look at it your still putting miles on it as long as the wheels are spinning should have just trailered it
That is true, but we like to flat tow it because its simpler overall - one less thing to have to deal with. 😀

Yes. The Jeep wheels are unlocked and naturally follow the turn of the RV.
Rip transmission if it’s all wheel drive
We follow the manufacture recommendations when flat towing. 😀
So that’s what neutral is for huh
Towing a vehicle behind an RV will always be stupid, you're putting miles on your tires, bearings, suspension, literally everything but the engine and diffs.
I agree, it puts wear on everything that is rotating. However, we choose to flat-tow because it is simpler and more convenient for us not to deal with a trailer. 😀
@@fuelyourwander that's true, not everyone has a trailer for their car
So the transfercase disconnects the transmission entirely? Interesting. I didn't know that.
I know if you tow at high speed / for long distances in neutral you run the risk of ruining your transmission as the trans fluid will start to heat up ( and there's no cooling being done like when the car is running)
That'll cause some serious damage
That’s exactly correct - and why we keep the Jeep in park. 😀
Skip to the part where you accidentally leave it in gear. Thanks
If that happens, we will be sure to share it. I’m sure it would be horrible and epic at the same time! 😀
Trailering is best
Pros and cons to both. We prefer flat towing. 😀
Why not leave transmission in neutral as well?
Automatic transmissions require the engine to be running to turn the pump to keep the moving parts properly lubricated. Keeping the trans in park ensures nothing in the transmission is rotating - potentially un-lubricated.
Wouldn’t that technically count as rolling back the odometer since you’re still putting miles on your jeep?
Not my knowledge. We just follow the manufacture’s guidelines on how to flat tow the Jeep. 😀
