Ritual Caster feat is good way to do something outside of smashing.
Too bad ONE dnd nerfed it to the ground.
Regarding the "wizards started the angry barbarian trope", there is a wealth of historical sources that also tie "barbarian" peoples to particularly ferocious and fearless fighting styles. The "berserker" in particular is tied specifically to a viking practice of fighting naked or only wearing animal pelts (interpretations differ on this) to inspire fear.
But yeah, barbarians rock! I'd love to see more out-of-combat things as well. Something like being able to Help with Strength-based checks as a bonus action or even as a reaction. Leveraging the "outsider" aspect to maybe give you advantage on seeing through "civilized" folk because you have a different perspective or something like that. As for Jared's suggestion, I think adding your Strength modifier to your allies' Charisma checks is a better avenue than advantage, because so many things already give advantage. This would be something additional.
Overall, though, I think the struggle of giving a barbarian out-of-combat abilities is that it is so closely defined by its fighting style. Much of what you would consider a "barbarian"'s out-of-combat abilities are cultural practices or products of their interaction with civilization, and that's just hard to codify mechanically without pigeonholing them.
I really like that idea of adding their strength score. Great idea.
You're totally right though. Codefying their 'tribal' tendancies can get a but messy and removes a lot of the fluidity of the barb class as it is now.
I still think there could be 1-2 things to add that don't do that though. Like what you mentioned of giving adv on someone else's str check or something
@@MonstersMulticlass Or the "if you cannot leap, I'll throw you", letting the barbarian substitute their STR check for that of an ally within 5 feet as a reaction. There are a lot of ways to slice that cake.
I try to come up with more out-of-combat abilities, but it always seems to default to combat ones.
If you lean into the superstition element of the Xanathar's flavor chapter and borrow a page out of PF2's playbook, I can also imagine a barbarian subclass that is all about recognizing and foiling magic and spells.
hey guys !
I think the sound was a bit low on this vid, could bump up a bit :)
Still loved the video ! I love when you go deep into class discussions
I thought it felt a bit quiet too. I'll let Ellie know!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I doubt rage will get tied to PB as you’ll get a ton of Barb dips for lots of rages
Very good point. Multiclassing as a whole would need changed up
In an early season of Adventure League (idk if they ever patched this) Totem Warrior who didn't rage was a strong build because you could generally get enough gold to buy a new Wand of Fireball whenever the last one ran out and Totem Barbarian getting the ability to ritual cast Speak With Animals at level 3 made it the most tanky monoclass build that met the Wand's prerequisite of "Requires Attunement by a Spellcaster".
That's actually hilarious
