    Hypnagogic hallucinations (hallucinating as you’re going to sleep) and hypnopompic hallucinations (hallucinating as you’re waking up) are wild! You can hear voices and see things or feel like youre floating or falling.
    But it doesn’t mean you’re experiencing psychosis and are schizophrenic, it just means you’re one of the 70% of people who experiences it.
    I’m diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder bipolar type. Fun fun.

      So I learned this in public school so take this lightly. But I was told that the falling one is super common and there's a hypothesis that it's an ancestral trait about us falling out of trees when we were sleeping. Like proto humanoid partial monkey type ancestors. Idk if this holds any water, but now when I feel the falling hallucinations I squeeze my blanket and remind myself I'm supported and let it drag me into sleep. It's weird but kind of fun

    I have a long history of very vivid hypnopompic hallucinations since I was a young kid. Like seeing people and stuff and sleep paralysis related hallucinations as well. They happen relatively often, but they used to be very frequent when I was a kid. I always wondered if the high frequency of hypnopomic hallucinations were related to my bipolar or if it is an unrelated phenomenon. Hypnogogic hallucinations are a lot more rare for me. This is a very fascinating topic!

    That's my almost every night thing since adolescence. I even like it. Except for the exploding or banging sound that may be scary because it is way too loud and drags me out of dream. Once I told my psychiatrist about those thigs I experience when going to sleep, and she wrote in my med history that I had a psychosis (not even close, actually).

    • @christinapalafox
      @christinapalafox 21 день назад +1

      I get the loud bang hallucinations. It happens when I am awake too- I "hear" a LOUD bang in every way except feeling any pressure on my eardrums. The phenomenon can be related to PTSD (I have severe, chronic PTSD, according to my shrink) and it's called Exploding Head Syndrome in that context.

    • @hettyherz
      @hettyherz 21 день назад

      @@christinapalafox Yeah, I've read about EHS, but I never had this diagnosis. Usually, I hear sounds at night (which is for hypnopompic/hypnogogic hallucinations). I do have brief psychosis episodes from time to time for no apparent reason, but I don't see EHS as a part of it. And I hear other types of sounds too, not banging only. I've met one psychiatrist in another country who wrote in her papers that I have CPTSD (I didn't tell her about EHS-like symptom), but despite all, I doubt it. I suspect, CPTSD / PTSD is sort of overdiagnosed, even among those who had traumatic childhood or/and adult traumatic experiences. It takes some time, but adults mostly cope with all that pretty much fine, and even leave that all behind almost right away (otherwise it would be not easy for us to survive and evolve as a species). It is quite easy to mistake something else for PTSD, and even easier if a person goes to a specialist to work through trauma - the symptoms open up and actually may not be related to the trauma at all but may look like PTSD symptoms - especially if a specialist practices in PTSD. Same with overdiagnosing people with an ASD and many others. So, I rule out the PTSD for me.

    Kind of related, one of my first hallucinations was going to bed, then hearing my parents argue and break stuff. It continued for what felt like hours, but I don’t know how long it actually was. I eventually realised it wasn’t real, but that made me even more scared, and I eventually fell asleep.

    Thanks for the info. Two months ago, when i was about to fall asleep for my evening nap, i suddenly felt as if my room was filled with creepy translucent bugs. I saw them, i felt them , i think for total of three seconds. I pretty much ran to my mother's room immediately after that, and incoherently explained the situation to her. As i spoke, i realised how impossible it was and saw her worried face.
    I thought my depression was finally affecting my mental processes, but i dont think thats the case now. I havent had another episode like that since.

    This information is part of how my sister helped me understand what it's like for people with hallucinations that do amount to a mental health diagnosis. She also said she would tell the same thing to some of her clients to help them understand that brains aren't as reliable as they might think and nudge them towards accepting things they experience vividly enough to believe them real as not real. One step in a journey towards a better quality of life, she would say. But she also had clients that had a higher quality of life with their extra experiences than the ever could without. For them she concentrated mostly on making sure they had protections against other people taking advantage of them.
    First step to working with people in tough situations is safety. Then comes the rest, whatever that might look like to help them live as high a quality of life as possible.

    Can I ask you some questions? My sister, though never diagnosed with schizophrenia, had very serious delusions. It's unfortunately too late to help her, but if someone else that I care about goes through that again, I want to do better at supporting them the best I can. I asked my psychiatrist and read a lot about what to do, but there is no substitute for the insight from the feelings of someone who has been there.
    If it's too personal or whatever, I understand. Either way, it's very brave of you to speak out about your issues and I have no doubt that your voice is a great comfort to others who have suffered in silence for too long.
    When I finally realized what was going on with her, the ideas had been stewing in her head for years, maybe decades. I was terrified. I had no earthly clue how to approach the topic. I had been taking her venting at face value the whole time until I heard her explain why her harassers were not showing up on her security cameras, that the abuse came in the form of making her apartment smell like various things that I couldn't personally smell, drugging her with drugs that only worked on her, the extent of the ring of harassers, and the amount of time and effort they committed to her misery. I tried to be as delicate as I could be, but at some point I had to say that I didn't think this was really happening, right?
    Is there _anything_ I could have said or shown her that could have shaken her out of these beliefs? Is there any way to broach the topic without making her feel defensive or judged? How do you wish people would have told you when you first learned that you were seeing or hearing things that weren't there? How did/could your loved ones express that they were only speaking out of genuine concern and support, not attacking you or criticizing you? All I managed to do was lose her trust.

    I experience this when really tired and unable to fall asleep. It's usually very scary cause i usually hear people screaming, fighting, shouting.... it defenetly not help with trying to fall asleep.
    I did not know though that you could have visual hallucination, but i think i actually experienced that once when i was yonger, a morning waking up. But it was odd because i was actually experiencing this hallucination together with my twin! We were describing to each other what we were seeing!
    Also, there is another txpe of hallucination I experience falling asleep, but i came to realise it wasn't my brain playing tricks on me, but my eyes. When i was younger, I enjoyed sleeping with my door open. It made it so that the door was the only source of dim light in my room, and i was usually staring at it. And often, when i was falling asleep, i was seeing the door slamming shut, startling me awake, but the door was still open. I came to realise that my eyes were transitioning from "night vision" (where you mainly see with the gray light receptor on your peripherical vision) to a day light vision (with the color receptors and on the center of the vision). This transition made it seem that the door was closing because the amount of light i was seeing was diminishing, due to the fact that the gray receptor are more photosensitive than the color receptor.
    I don't know if this is really what happens in my eyes, but that's the best interpretation that i could come up with

    I have narcolepsy and experience hypnogogic hallucinations pretty much daily. The ones my friends knew about were when I was falling asleep playing dungeons and dragons and suddenly id be flipped out and scared because I could hear all my bones breaking. I think back in the 2010's the internet was calling it "exploding head syndrome". Now it's less scary and I don't experience it as loud and jarring as it used to be. The scarier ones are when I'm driving near train tracks and I swear to GOD I can hear the train coming and the bells of the road gates closing, but when I get there there's no train. I've fully pulled over and taken a video of the tracks and watched it back to double check. I'm in stimulants now so it's pretty contained to within my home these days, way less scary. Usually just ends up with me buying a solution to a problem that doesn't exist on Amazon. Last time I bought guar gum 🤷‍♀️ could be worse but definitely an exhausting way to live

    I do get pretty regular sleep paralysis, but I handle that well enough. What I can't deal with is the spider ones. Only when I'm laying down to sleep in a kind of lighter room, and I hear a rustling, I see a spider that is like massive, and visible even without my glasses. (which I would NOT be able to see)
    It scares me so badly I tend to jump out of bed and flee the room, which scared my roommate really badly lol. After I wake up a little more I check and realize nothing is there. I suppose that is a hypnogogic hallucination. It convinced me so much once I ran to my mom and asked her to get it off my ceiling. Only thing freakier than seeing a 3 foot wide spider is looking again and it's Gone!
    Luckily, it really only co-occurs with migraines. (Unfortunately those happen weekly.) I just sleep with an eye mask so I immediately know that my SP or spider is not real. 😊

    Oh gosh yeah I've got that. Usually it's just stuff i expect--I'll hear my night music when it isn't playing, my phone going off, every now and then like my mum yelling at me (usually to wake up or just my name) or my animals making noise. I also see things, in part because i have really bad eyesight (-11) and usually it's very creepy. I did have sleep paralysis once and that one was wild. There was a big dobie in my house, could never decide if it was like aggressive or whatever it was just standing there and like somehow i also saw it outside i dunno it was very bizarre and surprisingly scary. One've my worst times though was laying there looking at a glass cupboard (the back was open) and thinking i saw one've my cats in there which was like "huh that's funny I've never seen them go in there" and i was trynna figure out who it was and I'm staring at it in the dark as i slowly realize that all of my cats were laying on me. I had a whole ass panic scramble like borderline hyperventilating trying to get my phone light on and my glasses on and--it was just a plastic bag. A plastic bag i Knew was there and had been there for months. But my brain was convinced it had eyes and teeth and shit lmao. Which i know is more about the whole seeing faces in everything thing humans do than hallucinating but it feels relevant 😂

    I occasionally have visual hallucinations when im very tired, or my brain will fabricate a cat in my peripheral vision every so often (which makes sense because I have a lot of them) but im gonna assume that those are normal cause I have no reason to believe otherwise.

    I rarely get this. Once I had heard a voice (internally) saying "THE MOST AWAKE HOUR?!" and then I woke up. I don't know if it counts when I had a dream and seamlessly at the end of it the person in the dream said "It's time to get up and go" and I woke up. Rarely I have these and the falling sensation

  • @Elosdreams
    @Elosdreams Месяц назад

    I experienced this very often. I would say I experience both very equally when waking up and going to sleep I received very vivid images but also as if their scenes like people are moving they are talking or they deliver a certain type of message so recently I've been dealing with a certain set of insecurities and fears so sometimes when I'm going into a sleeping state or coming out of it I received images or videos that correspond to those things. It's currently very scary and odd because sometimes it's stuff that has to relate to my life in a very abstract meaning way. But to look it up and see that it's common kind of brings down my anxiety. It has been something that I have experienced ever since I was younger but I feel like as I've gotten older especially now that I've reached my twenties it has become very more intense.

    I will sometimes hallucinate that someone is touching me, and it freaks me out. One time, I had woken up early morning on vacation to a weird, rumbling noise, and then when I was finally about to fall asleep, I was laying on my side with eyes closed, and felt something put its hand on the bed right behind me, and breathe all over my face. Thinking it was my brother being a jerk, I threw my elbow back and nothing was there. Still freaks me out, but I like to laugh it off

    Oh my god a couple of stories I HAVE to share-
    One time when I woke up at like 3 am, I saw this tall female figure in my doorway saying my name. I literally said out loud “go away, I’m trying to sleep” and just… went back to sleep??
    Another time I woke up, I had been sleeping on my arm so it was completely numb. Well me in my half awake state looked down, felt it was numb, and saw my own arm as a noodle??? Idk it was weird😭

    I’ve had these during sleep paralysis and it’s scary when it sounds like demonic voices 😖
    Cool when it’s music and I’m creating it with my mind
    And AWESOME even I’ve heard passed loved ones talk to me ❤️ was it actually them no clue 🤷🏻‍♀️ did the voices that claimed to be them say they loved me and were at peace definitely 🙂
    When I’m not in sleep paralysis I hear nothing besides an inner monologue which is basically just my thoughts 🤷🏻‍♀️

    When I was a kid, I would often hear a TV in the other room as I woke up. For a long time, too - up to half an hour (which was the freaky part - usually when I hear or see things, its only for a second). But when I finally got out of bed and left my room to check whoever was awake, there was nothing. I'd check all the rooms, too. Nothing.
    For some reason it doesn't happen anymore. No idea why. However, increasingly often now, I feel like I'm falling when going to sleep.
    Unrelated, but as a kid (4 ish years old?) I'd get the feeling that my body was going too fast and time was going too slow. It's hard to explain, but basically I'd feel like my heart rate was fast and my thoughts were fast but my body was moving slow ("time" is slow). If anyone knows what that shit was about lmk 💀
