@@92nbush it was probably just a fault in the system. That generation had a 3 channel kelsey-hayes system; if it doesn't get a signal it deactivated the entire system. That's why the truck locked up.

I drove my single cab 1998 S=10 till around 2018. With 276,000 miles on it the only reason I had to get rid of it was because the clutch assembly was totally worn out and dealership said GM did not make replacement parts for it anymore !
They ran lease specials on the 4 cylinder,2wd back around then for $100 a month with gm discount. Every 18 year old kid in Detroit metro area was sporting one
I had a '95 4x4 with the 4.3 and it was a really good truck. I bought it with about 60,000 miles and owned it for 9 years and sold it with almost 220,000. Good, dependable truck.
You still have to consider that this was a 4WD extended cab truck with a V6. The 2WD, regular cab version with the 4 cylinder would have been closer to $12k, which is around $23k in today's money.
And that's with ABS. They might want to take that one back to the dealer and have them look it over. I remember stopping like that in a pickup. But that was on a wet road with an older truck with traditional brakes.
Back in the 80s, my brother and I sat in the jump seats in the back of a Ford Ranger at a car show. Even as 7 and 12 year olds, those things were a puny joke.
The year after this, Ford came out with second doors on _BOTH_ sides of their SuperCab models, on both the Rangers and F-Series! I miss my '98 Ranger... Those were the days!
Gm needs to bring these back. I had a 2000 reg cab 2wd, 5 speed. No power at all but good, reliable little truck. Only problem I ever had was the fuel pump going out.

These were all pretty rotted out by 8-10 years old and failed NY inspections for frame damage by 12-14 years. I only see really nice ones in summer or very rotten ones lingering
Had a 94 with the 2.2 4 cylinder bought new. The engine had to be changed at 8,000 miles. Bad valve ticking and grew louder over time. New engine same thing. Bought a New 96 Ranger.

They should’ve retested the braking test with a different truck or had the ABS brake module checked. That was awful. This seemed worst than any vehicle without any type of ABS. Also that 150 ft stop 60-0 would be long even by the standards of the day with a compact truck.
I had a 98 regular cab, 2.2l 5-speed with the ZQ8 suspension (Extreme without the ground effects). Any time I had a panic stop the ABS quit working only in that moment just like this test truck. Dealers never could sort it. EVERY electronic component failed at least once or twice along the way… I replaced it with a B2300 (Mazda version of Ranger) and had 10 completely trouble free years. My last GM, ever.

I spent a few days trying out short box - regular cab versions of Ranger’s, S-10’s, Dakota’s, and even the little Nissan from that era. I remember the S-10 feeling way too car-like, while the Ranger felt most like a “truck” to me, so that is the route I went. Drove that little Ranger for twenty years and then gave it to my niece to be her first vehicle in high school. She grew up, went to college, and got a “big girl job” and then sold the Ranger to her folk’s next door neighbor! It is still on the road today and I even get to see it sometimes when I visit my sister-in-law up in Fort Worth! Bought another new Ranger in 2009 and that truck is sitting pretty in my garage with under 40k on the odometer and all waxed up for Saturday afternoon drives in the country……..🛻

As a proud sonoma (s-10) owner of 20 years I can tell you the brakes are trash. ABS turning on for no reason, poor stopping power, insane brake fade, and general unpredictability. Yes the brakes were well maintained, doesn't matter. If you drive these things hard, like when i was in high-school, you will be replacing front brakes every 10-15k. I have has a focus st as a daily since 2015 and the brakes look brand new after 60k.
GM only used 4 wheel disc brakes on more expensive products. While GM did have standard ABS on most of its vehicles at the time, which was a nice touch, they also tended to cheap out and use rear drums in many cases. This truck would’ve greatly benefited from 4 wheel disc brakes.

Previous extended cabs were two door models where the back of the cab was accessed like a sports coupe by flopping the front seats forward and crawling between the seat and B-pillar. This optional third door was kind of a big deal. In fact, I don't think GM ever offered a four door version of the extended cab S-10 in the US. A few years after this episode was filmed GM would finally make a four normal doors crew cab S-10, but never an extended cab with two clamshell doors. That was saved for their next generation small truck, called Colorado.
Super expensive for this class of truck. The V6 Tacoma was right around this price and could literally go a million miles without any major repairs. Ford Rangers were significantly cheaper when equipped similarly. However, the styling of these and the GMC Sonoma was a big deal then. It was kind of a retro modern thing and most people found it attractive.
The only reason real small trucks went away was because it became so much easier to get financing. Why make small cheap utilitarian trucks for people on a budget when people with no money are allowed to pay over MSRP for factory luxury brodozers and have loans that are underwater before they drive off the lot.

Easily the worst pick up truck ever made. Ugly, unreliable, poorly made, underpowered turds. The 2.2 was garbage and the 4.3 was even worse. Gas mileage of a big block power of a lawn mower. They were also an absolute nightmare to work on. Im glad all of these turds are long. Havent seen one on the road in years. GM doesnt make any good vehicles but these were the worst.

You could still find them. A lot of single cabs still driving around but I often see the extended cabs in junkyards.

Pickups changed a lot since this video, not always for the better. I miss simple, easy to live with little trucks. It’s why I drive an old Ranger.

That's weird. I had one and it still ran like new with 145k miles. The automatic, on the other hand, was slipping badly.

They had three normal tests and it failed after that.
