I was in a back highway in the Philippines once, and I heard a really deep but high revving rumble creeping up for behind us while at a stop light. I’ve only ever seen SuperFours in pictures before but I immediately assumed correctly that I was about to see a SuperFour. There i was witnessing the absolutely douchy yet excusable loud exhaust of this wonderful 400cc bike carrying a 160-200 kilo man, who was physically bigger than the bike, all the way to 120Kmh before we could even make it up 50 in our family MPV
we got 400 fours here. honda cb-1, yamaha fzr400, and suzuki bandit 400. cb-1 had gear driven cams and a 13750 redline. the super four you rode here was the replacement for the cb-1. we never got that one as the cb-1 never sold well and only lasted two years, 89-90. the super four was styled after the cb1000 where the cb-1 had its own style.
Thanks for pointing this out. As a former Bandit 400 owner, I'm constantly reminding people that there was a brief shinning moment when the US was able to get adorable and practical sporty bikes that weren't designed as falic representations.
The end of this video was amazing. Really gets me thinking about how much bigger the world is than we see it from our own home. Pennsylvania is a blessing and a curse man. I'd love to see whats really out there, beyond the city.

Ended up buying one of these only a few weeks ago as my first bike on recommendation from a workmate who rides. 2012 model, 15,000km, tricolour in red/white with gold wheels. It’s a beauty! I love it! It is an absolute beauty to ride and I think it will never leave my garage.
Just realized a small error, Honda made the CB400F NC27 in 1989 with a four cylinder, not 1991. There was an entire model generation or two before this bike. In fact, it was even brought to the us in 1989/1990 as the Honda CB-1.
was looking for this comment. yea CB-1 came to canada for 1989-1990 and i think america and uk. made in japan 4 cyl so like godfather to this bike? hella fun ride

Yeah but... but... what about the 1989 - 1990 Honda CB-1 (400FT) and the Honda Hawk GT 650 of the same era with trick single side rear swing arm as standard? They WERE brought to the states it's just that when Honda tries to sell you a CB-1 (even one that revs to 13K rpm and has gear driven cams) for $4K+ at the dealership and the Honda 600 'Hurricane' F1 was just under 6K most people just bought up. This has always pretty much been a two bike country: one engine under 1 liter and one engine at or above. There never seemed to be a large enough demographic to fill out the sub-liter categories much more than the 600 or 750s, which is a shame because the CB-1 was an excellent bike, small, flickable, light and my first ever.
I wanted a Honda CB-1 400cc when I was in high school. The CB-1 was available in the U.S. from 1989-1990 it was a liquid cooled transverse 4 cylinder. So we did get a 400cc Honda.
@@mws3779 I thought the exact same thing until I got one. It's a fast, fun little bike but the gearing is insanely low (3000 RPM at 30 mph), and the seating position is pretty uncomfortable for trips longer than 20 minutes. If you want a similar bike, I imagine any old 600cc sport bike would be better.
I want to live in NZ since I was 12, Im from Argentina and was looking at this bike to buy there, and I found a video of you THERE, I subbed like 4 years ago and I just stumbled on this video and made me realize I need to do it now.
The VTEC systen used on this bike is basically what they used on the VTEC Honda Fit/Jazz that you had. Both engines go from 2 valve to 4 valve per cylinder when VEC is activated. There is even a Motorcycle/Scooter that uses an engine based on exactly the same engine as the Fit/Jazz but with 2 less cylinders, the Honda NC700D Integra which is a cool maxi scooter with a dual clutch transmission and half a Fit engine that was made to run not completely smooth to give it more feel.
Actually, America did get a 400cc inline 4, I owned one until last year when I sold it to a new rider. You can see it on my channel if you're interested- it was a Bandit 400, only imported a couple of years because they didn't sell well. I just acquired a Honda 919, because I like naked styling...but as pretty as my 919 is the Bandit 400 with it's trellis frame was still yet prettier and preceded the Ducati Monster by 2 years.
i love the look of this bike looks waaaay better than the modern CB. also i've been watching the prices to get one of these cbs, and they pretty sure they have gone up in value.
you guys had the cb1, one of my favorite bikes ever made. 4 inline cam gear shaft, same engine as a 1989 honda cbr 400rr but retuned for the streets. only released in japan and the usa
Recently acquired one of the more recent versions of this beauty. Even if it's ostensibly a "small" bike it feels reassuringly weighty and stable. Like the portly, bearded mechanic in this 50s, who looks at a seemingly impossible repair job then claps you on the shoulder and says "I'll have it sorted out in a week."
These bikes are like rocking-horse here shit in the UK. Most of them are grey imports. Superb and high quality machines, perfect for our roads, and in great demand in the vintage collectors crowd.
I think this later became the Honda hornet which I owned in Auckland as a learner. Its was a great bike,250cc but also a 4 banger. It had a 180 rear which was good too!
Prices are high for learner bikes in NZ and Australia and the UK and generally anywhere that has hard and fast rules about what you can ride while you're learning, thus more buyers every year, same number of 'good' learner bikes = high price. Benefit is you won't lose a cent on the bike so you can easily trade up to something good later.
It's a nice beginner bike, that's what it was for me. I quickly got tired of the need to rev it high. For me the game is played in the 2000-5000rpm range. Now I own a hornet 600, and again it's tiring to have to rev it, but much better than the SF.
Sometimes when Mr. Regular screws up and has to re-up; I re-watch because he deserves it. :P .. I really wanna get into riding, really wouldn't mind something just like this.
Even in the USA that bike would be sick for a really fun and sporty beginner bike, much like the Kawasaki EX500 or CBR500. Enough power to merge with freeway traffic, enough power to sustain 80+ mph no problem. But unlike those other boring beginner bikes this one revs to 12,000 rpm ;) Good for girls and smaller riders too.
love the dialogue, but I bet some portions containing the soundtrack of the vehicles you review like in this video but a more lengthy clip. would win over more repeat/consistent viewers. also longer videos = more ad revenue right? You guys have done a phenominal job reviewing pretty much an all encompassing petrol head array of vehicles both 2 and 4 wheels
Yes, we never got the CB400SF in merica', but we DID get the CB-1, which is basically the same thing. Of course we are going to have to wait 15 years for the first fuel injected VTEC yo CB400SF's to be importable, but for that time you can still enjoy the 1989-1990 CB-1s. Hey RCR, did you go see sparky while you were in New Zealand? :)
Great advertising for New Zealand. Come on down when you are able to come America. We've got no Covid (by the grace of God). Summer days full of content... Super surf and a cold beer awaits you.
In the ‘70s Honda sold a 400cc SOHC 4 cylinder CB that had an exhaust header that was a work of art. I longed for that little gem but all my money went to diapers, groceries and new shoes for 5 kids. As for lane splitting, that’s an incredibly bad idea. On a bike or in a car, the lane I’m in is all mine. I share it with no one. Want to get where you’re going faster? Leave earlier. If you get hit, who’s paying the damages?
TBF, what learner is buying this bike because they want a a quiet commuter bike. They're buying it because it's probably the only learner 4cyl and sounds amazing.
If we were allowed lane splitting in Florida, I could get to work in half of the time and take up 1 less space for another car to occupy! The only good thing I will ever give to California is the fact that they allow lane splitting to be legal. Have I done it...oh yah....but I am always shoulder checking for police first.
But for real, I want the shit out of this bike, seems like the perfect step between a scooter for only around town stuff, and a tourer that's too big to just take out for a lap around the local bars.
If you can find one, review a Yamaha YX600 Radian. My dad had a couple of them. I remember those bikes having like a 10,000 or 11,000 rpm redline out of a 600cc 4 banger.
