Ok this guy is a genius. Musician AND communicator. You can't avoid learning something from this. I'm seeing where Charlie Hunter gets a lot of his approach.
Tuck once mentioned his mentor in a video. A dude named Tommy Crook. I finally saw Crook on film myself and he was playing a Switch Master with two bass strings installed on the bottom end. The Charlie Hunter thing rings true to be sure!
Amazing ideas from a guitar genius. It is important to remember that the staccato martial arts style is a great complement to Patti's extraordinary voice.
By far, Tuck is one of my all time favorite guitarists. Saw him and his wife Patti at Blues Alley in Washington DC several months ago and fell in love with them. Such a beautiful couple.
I still have his masterclass VHS somewhere... so hard to play... I was him and his wife in concert, close to Bordeaux, in late 90's, it was a really perfect night of music !
There's a story about Art Tatum where one classical pianist transcribed one of his pieces (was it Aunt Hagar's Blues?) and played it for Tatum, and Tatum said, "Can you play it like this?" and put in all kinds of variations. The classical pianist was aghast (and deflated) and said, "When did you figure out *that* version?" Tatum smiled and said, "Just now."
One of the most blessed L5s. Most of them wind up with Dentists and other prosperous no-talents. This L5 is in the hands of a musician who can very credibly demand changes on the basis of his outlying skill set and pretty intense comprehension of what's happening with the instrument. Most players, an L5 is a better guitar than they are a player. In this case, the instrument is subsumed by the working musician. That's how it should be.
The year is 2014 and Mr. Andress still doesn't give a rat's ass about that missing marker: ruclips.net/video/U5H7_brEU18/видео.html #martialartsapproach
I guess im asking the wrong place but does anyone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account?? I stupidly lost my password. I would appreciate any tricks you can give me.
@Adonis Sterling thanks for your reply. I got to the site on google and I'm trying it out now. I see it takes a while so I will reply here later with my results.
You're awesome, Tuck: I still remember your show in Eindhoven, many years back. Your wife was amazing too but as a guitarist myself (sort of..) I can appreciate your style a bit more. The left hand staccato is just so more rhythmic!
staccato seems to be his favourite word! that L5 really had to pick up some serious fights! that mad professor invented a new style of playing: martial arts style! killer!!
that's a good one..to get inspiration just put the needle of the record player on any spot of an Art Tatum record ..and try and find out what this jazz giant does ..and reproduce it on the guitar...hahahahahathx Tuck for making me laugh. With that remark you've just inspired me...besides that mountain called Art Tatum
Got to see Tuck and Patty in San Juan Capistrano about 2007 he was a Oklahoma Hero to me. My Sister met him in Tulsa back 1980's or so. Tommy Crook was Tuck'a Guitar Teacher.
I have gone to Blue Note and listened to Tuck and Patti. His guitar has never given a decent sound, imho. Nor live, nor in recordings. Pat Metheny rules for sound. Pity. Nevertheless, he had a unique style . Nowadays, his style is widely used by almost every finger picker.
He's truly a monster on Guitar! Wonderful being so fluid in his playing.

Nobody can play a one man band like Tuck does! And nobody can play the guitar like him! Patty xxx from Holland
Tuck blew my mind years ago when I saw a video of him play all the parts to Clean Up Woman...at the same damn time...🤯
Excellent musician. Real Dope. I love him and Patti music

I first saw Tuck back in 1985. I was in a club sitting no more than 20 feet from him. I was blown away and now he is one of my favorites.
Tuck and Patti are amazing. Saw them at Wolf Trap and couldn’t get enough

This guy is 100%, totally great and someone from which one can learn so much!

Brilliant on many levels.

A f ing men!
I feel very grateful to be able to hear music by Tuck and Patti. They can forgive my sorta f stuff ha ha. Well said!
What great insights from a true master!
He's such a brilliant musician.
Martial arts approach. That guitar is battered as hell, by a great musician the way it should be. Its missing a 7th fret marker..epic

Ever brilliant.

Tuck is the humble master!!!

Still amazes me 2024 Sept 24.

yeah Art Tatum...
Indeed. Who needs a 7th fret inlay?! Not Tuck.
The most tortured L-5 on the planet, no doubt!
And missing a pearl block marker in the 7th position...;-)
This is where art eats itself, because of the desire to impress. Just put a 'Frank Marino' on and relax.
St Vincent's uncle.
Yup
