i was in the pit that day with the EB 110 bugatti team. Max was driving like a mad guy, going faster and faster to catch first place and at every lap Mr Moretti was hearing his car screaming like hell. Then he was looking at the sky saying in italian "he's going to break the car, he's going to break the car" :-)
I remember watching that race live and how exciting it was to watch Papis almost overcome that deficit for the win. The race came up in a conversation while watching the Formula E race and the nonsense they go through changing cars and minimum time limits in the pits to ensure safety. I pointed out that the "Mad Max" pit stop while exciting was probably the best example of why pit speed limits are needed. What a race!
I saw most of Max's races, not only in this car, but all the others. The GTP days had no equal. Then these WSCs had their era. Saw all events from '89-'95 at NE tracks. Then I moved to S. Florida and saw more in Daytona and Homestead. Then, ironically, I saw Max jogging in South Beach. 🙌🏁
I’m pretty sure only Road & Track has a road test of the 333.....I’ll never forget reading through it, and looking at the shape without sponsorship decals ..I still have all my issues from 89-2016/18ish.....
Ahhh okay, that makes a lot of sense, thanks. (By the way what if they cross the finish line exactly when the clock expires? Do they have to do another lap, or not? Has that ever happened?)
I kinda simplified it too much. The race director will wave the white flag if they judge the time will expire during the next lap. So if a lap generally takes 1 min 20 seconds and there is only 1 minute left on the clock when the leader crosses the finish line, they will show the white flag even though there is still 1 minute left on the timer. It's up to the race director's discretion.
The opposite is true too... You think the Vanthoor Brothers aren't quick? You think Indycar drivers aren't quick? All the top GT3 drivers could run for a World Championship in F1 if they got the chance. They are no joke.
@@SieTeppischfresser Not entirely true. Especially the GT3 drivers were racing in F3 for example against those going up to F1. The later F1 drivers mostly wiped the floor with the ones going to gt3.
@@SieTeppischfresser Indy, GT, WEC drivers are incredible, but it’s naive to consider they could win an F1 championship or contend for wins except for absolute talents.
Gotta love Max....he wasn’t always the fastest guy, but he drove the living piss out of everything he jumped in.

xtof de moco that Bugatti was such a beautiful car. Derek Hill was part of the driver lineup, correct?
Man I remember watching this as a kid. Epic race. And only a couple of more weeks until the 2019 Rolex 24!
One of my faves to watch and hear

5:55 in the words of max a year later, "that was flat out" lol
My second visit to the Daytona 24hrs from UK. I will never forget Mad Max in '96,glad I was there 😊

Taylor May have won the race, but Papis became a legend
We weren't worthy of the 333 SP and may never be.
Awesome video! Remember this well. Go to the 6 min mark if you only came for the epic pit stop.
I watched it live! The day I became a Max fan.

I was there! Awesome!
That Oldsmobile Aurora V8 sounds similar to the BMW Z4 GT3...
I saw those magnificent Oldsmobiles every year they ran at multiple events. Truly spectacular. 🏁
Ciao Campione! Avevamo parlato a Le Mans 1997. Tante belle cose!
I remember this!
It was exiting because it was obvious that Mad Max must have got the word and turned it up a notch.
when i hear max papis, i remember 1995 spa. when he spun and couldn't turn his car and go backwards a for a little while :)
Rip Jim pace
Max Papeese...lol
He needs to see about getting an upgrade on his phone
Is this papis’s actual account.
Yes.
Only if Max hadn't pitted...
Huh
How can there be a white flag when it's a timed race?
***** When the clock expires. The next lap is the last lap.
Ahhh okay, that makes a lot of sense, thanks. (By the way what if they cross the finish line exactly when the clock expires? Do they have to do another lap, or not? Has that ever happened?)

Aaah, that makes even more sense. Thanks :)
And this is why people pay to go to F1. Even a poor F1 driver is bloody fast in anything else.

In my opinion, Rene Rast is one of the best in the world.
