  • A quick look at my DIY Garden Office - Games Room Build.
    In this video I explain the cold roof system, please ask questions, as I'm sure there's lots I missed.

    A far superior job than most of the so called professional companies building these

      Thanks Mac, nice of you to say, most credit goes to Ali Dymock though, a great inspiration.

    Hi Kev, I’m at similar stage of my build at moment and also have tapered walls due to shape of garden boundary. Basically a 5.5 by 4.7 rectangle but with back right corner chopped off. Following the garden fence meant angles of 50 degrees and 40 degrees ( with hindsight should’ve just made it 45:45 degrees as mitre saw cuts would’ve been easier!!). Anyway, I’m trying to work out how strengthen the wall connections on those two angles. For normal corners the end studs butt up nicely against each other at right angles and I just drove a number of 100mm screws from top to bottom of those corner studs. For the angles corners whilst I can get the front edges of the end studs to touch , obviously because of the taper they then move away from each other. I was thinking I could cut some angled noggins to pack out that space and screw 100mm through? My top double plate overlaps on those corners so there is some strength there and obviously the rafters also help with rigidity. How did you deal with this (I couldn’t quite see in your video).

      Hi Chris, it's a good question. I pretty much did as you're suggesting, except I also cut a bespoke triangular shaped length which filled the outside gap, then screwed this in at angles into the corner pieces, completely closing the gap. This method was pretty strong, but you are correct, once you get the roof joists on and the noggins between the joists, all that combined produces a great strength. Interested in seeing your build, if you have any pics / video anywhere.

      @@speedyrazor1 Hi Kev. Not sure if you're a member of Liam Griffin's Facebook group for garden room self-builders. It's grown really quickly since he started it a few months ago and very helpful bunch of guys and girls. I've uploaded a fair few progress photos/vids on there (I just use my own name for both youtube and facebook). Not sure if youtube comments allow links but I'll try and paste here anyway: facebook.com/groups/3043587272414632

    Great video and thanks for sharing - did you use smaller height noggins in the middle to enable airflow across them above the PIR?

    • @speedyrazor1
      @speedyrazor1  3 года назад +1

      Hi Greg, yes exactly. The joists are 170mm + firrings (90 mm to 0), all the noggins are the same height at 120mm, leaving a good air flow gap ranging from 50mm up to 140mm. Take a look at the Cold Roof - Part 2 video, ruclips.net/video/mbqr6D8ceK0/видео.html

    Hi Mate, I have build garden room( cold roof)
    Today I have noticed there is a mold just above vented soffit, you know maybe what can cause mold on plywood all around vented soffit, it’s absolutely fine inside the room

    I am planning on using firrings as well. Do you have cross ventilation as you seem to have used vented soffits all the way around? How will air flow across the firring/joists? I was thinking about notching out the bottom of the firring to achieve this but unsure on how deep or frequent to notch as it will be holding up the 18mm ply deck and epdm. Actually, I think I have just spied a notch at 2mins 37secs. Can you provide any detail on this? Thanks

      Hi Steven, I have vented soffits on 3 of the 5 sides dues to the shape of the building. Airflow is achieved from front to back in the direction of the joists, all the way along the above the PIR insulation, there is at least a 70mm air gap flowing from one end to the other where there is a vented soffit, thus creating the flow of air. Take a look at the 'Clod Roof - Part 2' video, as it explains more about this, ruclips.net/video/mbqr6D8ceK0/видео.html&lc=UgyyNJT2lNc9caj9nu54AaABAg

    Kev how did you fix the firrings to the joists? nails or screws (different lengths as you get thinner on the firrings? ) also what spacings? thank you

    • @speedyrazor1
      @speedyrazor1  3 года назад

      I used wood glue and different length nails (nail gun). Firings were different lengths, as for the odd shape, non square. I used 16" centres on joists.

    plz confirm its not necessary to have the firrings perpendicular to the joists? i think thats what uve done thx

      Hi, firrings run in same direction as joists.

    What height the building

    • @speedyrazor1
      @speedyrazor1  3 года назад +1

      Hi, inside height is about 2.15m, I was able to keep a good height as my garden is sloped, so gained extra height because of the ‘highest ground level’.
