Why do western foreigners always in shock and stereotype this simple and humble people and call them poor, they might not be financially secure but they are rich in culture and happy, they have nature their family oriented and the location that provide them food, fresh air, no pollution, stress from a modern City or Industrialzed Country..To my opinion Money can't buy Happiness. I have an answer to your question, but you must have an open mind to alternative views of other cultures. If you are not able to do this, then you will continue to only see your way as the only and best way.
First, if you don't travel, it is very difficult to understand why other cultures see and live life differently from the way you and your family have always seen life. A good example is the children's story of "The country mouse and The city mouse".*
In the Western world, a child is taught from a very young age that everything in life must be worked at with your best efforts. You are taught to work as hard and consistently as you possibly can. My parents always stressed that we should always do our best if we wanted to succeed in life. This starts with loving your family and the work you do around the house, to school, and on to work and your own family. We are taught that the harder you work, the more successful you will be. Not doing so only leads to failure and that is how everyone will see you, including your own view of yourself. This culture of hard work for success in life can lead to stress. Stress harms the body, mind, and relationships. Still, this is our culture. It is quite a choice not everyone can manage. Many fall through the cracks of this way of seeing life. You will see great success with many that live this way, but you will also see great failures. There are many people that fail and live in deep poverty and despair. Many people end up having a short and physically and emotionally stressful life.
Because of colonization, this culture has been forced on the rest of the world, resulting in very rich countries and very poor countries. Often poorer countries are constantly taught (told) they are poor because they don't live like Westerners. Westerners are constantly taught (told) that we have the best way and the poorer countries are poor because they choose to be poor, by rejecting our cultural philosophy. People, in general, are like sheep. We tend to do what the majority does and how they think. No one wants to be the odd one. So, we live as our neighbor does, even if that isn't the life we would like to have.
Although, I grew up as a "country mouse", I have had to live the city mouse way of life. It's a very hard life. I dream of living in the country, but there are no jobs there. You can't advance your children's future as well as your own. This is why so many of us are now finding our way to places like the Philippines. For those of us with small pensions, we have found that we can at least survive in the Philippines without living on the street in poverty, as we would in the Western world. This does not mean we are rich, but it means we can have a bit more than the average person living on such a small pension. It is true that many Westerners make a lot of money, in comparison to the average Filipino, except in the West, such as America, everything cost a great deal more than it does in other parts of the world such as the Philippines. An example is the cost of a lofe of bread. In America, an eatable lofe of bread will cost you around $4 or about P200. That is just a lofe of bread. By the time you buy enough groceries to make a meal, you have spent a great deal of your paycheck. Then you have all of the other expenses most Filipinos don't. Everything cost so much more, so than by the time you pay all of your bills and all of the other things your family needs to just survive, there is nothing left. So you stress until the next paycheck. This can be a very difficult life. Heart attack and strokes are the number one cause of death in America.
Even though I grew up in the country, the Philippines is more like the country for me than where I grew up. In comparison, I am the city mouse and most Filipinos are the country mouse. Many of us (Americans/Westerners) yearn for country living but it rubs against a lifetime of a culture that insists that we stress for life. When and if you move to the West, you will quickly find yourself caught up in the same stressful state of mind. We don't look down on those that live a more simple life, we just have no way to live that kind of life where we come from and neither would you if you live where we do.
So, is your lifestyle better than ours? The answer is not as easy as yes or no. If you are happy, you are happy, where ever you find yourself. If you are not able to handle the conditions you find yourself in, then you are most likely unhappy. Poor is poor, no matter if you live in the West or you live in South East Asia. Richness can be seen as a state of mind by some, or loads of money and possessions for others. I prefer a little of both. One thing is for sure. After knowing what I know of the West and the Philippines, I would rather be poor in the Philippines than poor in the West. In the West, a family like the one in this video making brooms for 25 pesos each, lives a much better life than an American making many times more than that per day. Many Americans making much more than 25 pesos for every 30 minutes to an hour, would live in the worst of conditions.
I hope this touch on the subject helps Filipinos understand better how foreigners live and see life from how Filipinos live and see life. I lived for 6 years in the Philippines and never could get my Filipino family to understand the differences. I think you need to travel to understand better how others live and see life around them.
Maybe this video will help a little. It is a version of "The country mouse and The City Mouse". There are other versions that may be better. You can search them out for yourself. ruclips.net/video/1Ef_SbmNNi8/видео.html

This so-called poor people in the province are far more happy free stress than those people living in the big cities. Besides, this people will never get hungry coz they have plenty of foods to eat. Such as, coconuts, bananas, root crops, vegetable, fruits, fish, few to mentions. If there's a great depression in the city. Only the people in the province will survive.
