- I've wanted to do a Sonic Youth riffs video for a while now, but as the different tunings are so awkward to use, I'm only just getting round to it now. There are obviously a lot of songs I could have chosen, but here are 7 that are among some of my favourites and that didn't require too many different tunings to switch between. As I recently bought a new bass, I was tempted to have a go at layering all three guitar parts, which may have turned out to be one big mess. Even still, I learnt a lot in the process.

Legend has that David Grohl was trying to figure out how to play Schizophrenia and ended up writing Everlong.
The chord progression reminds me these days
He didn’t try to play it he just found a chord he thought sounded like schizophrenia
Yeah, he wrote the main riffs to Everlong while he was in between takes of another song. He was just strumming and liked the chord progression. Then he went back to it after and built off of that riff. There's a video of him telling this story on YT.

It’s an acquired taste, that’s sure, but it’s art. Not all art has to be liked. I don’t like anime, but I appreciate other forms like painting. Same with genres
Still in awe sonic youth actually made a song in standard tuning
Thurston Moore stated that their first album (self titled, 1981) is in standard tuning. It is when they were taken into the studio with Glenn Branca that they started only using alt tunings.

IKR, love them too, but so annoying!!! I want to play this shit, but only have 2 guitars. I imagine once successful Thurston and Lee toured with like 40 guitars pre tuned and labeled right?
@@michaelesgro9506 yes, when I saw them on the Daydream Nation tour in ‘88, they had a rack of old Jazzmasters in different tunings. It broke up the flow somewhat when they had to change guitars between every song.
@@gusironside3735 Wow. They're one of the few bands I wanted to see perform but never got around to it for some reason (despite ample opportunities or even just running into them randomly in a club or small venue like I did with dozens and dozens of others). Bizarre as I am a lifelong NYer too!!!
Evol is such an underrated album

@@revalone3944 he's more technical than Kurt tho.. Thurston might not be very technical like Eric Clapton or Eddie Van Halen but he is the master of noise rock.. he could alot of things with his guitar.. and could create different sounds

Sonic Youth definitely have some of my absolute favorite guitar parts so this was sweet af. Fave song is maybe titanium expose? There's so many good ones though-- great video man

Was super hoping to hear “(I Got a) Catholic Block” featured, since I love the main riff of that song so much, but Schizophrenia is also hypnotic and beautiful. Love the entire Sister album.

I broke down and bought a Roland VG-99 so that I could store and recall tunings. Great for experimenting, live shows, and keeping the guitar count down. Damn you, Sonic Youth, MBV, and Nick Drake!

Love Sonic Youth so much that I when I stumbled across this it got my feet tapping and felt energised, well done mate, superb, thanks for breakdown of tunings as well..... last gig I saw (before Covid) was Kim Gordon at the Roundhouse London but also saw and met Thurston at a Rough Trade in store, top people that are truly inspirational, Lee Ranaldo should have been in London but every thing is on hold, let’s hope Sonic Youth come back one day, you could choose their set list!!! ✌🏻

Nice selection. I've learned to play along to a lot of the Goo/Dirty era tunes in standard tuning. Not always perfect sounding, but fine for just messing around.

Thanks man. Yeah there's a really good site for Sonic Youth tabs that gives all the details about tunings and string gauges and stuff. Though, to be fair, I didn't go quite to those extremes for this.
