  • The New York Staff Band perform "Under Two Flags" by Bramwell Coles at the band's 129th annual festival held on March 19, 2016 at the Centennial Memorial Temple.
The catalyst for this march came during Bramwell Coles brief service in the Royal Army Medical Corps at the end of World War One. It was intended as a salute to British Salvationists serving in the Armed Forces and includes quotations from several national airs like Rule Britannia, Men of Harlech, Bluebells of Scotland and God save the King (Queen).

Under Two Flags is one of the classics of the amazing Salvation Army repertoire of marches now played by contesting bands including Black Dyke who were of course welcomed by NSB on this occasion. By the way I live only a few miles away from the Queensbury home of 'Dyke' with whom Brighouse & Rastrick (of whom I have the privilege of being a Trustee and Vice President) have a long standing friendly local rivalry!

This one was meant for the British armed forces during ww2. today, a new arrangement needs to be composed called "Under 134 flags", because I feel the Salvation army now doesn't serve just under two flags. It's work has already been initiated in 130+ countries

It was written as a tribute to British Salvationists who were conscripted into the UK armed forces during WW2. So, sorry, Under Two Flags remains appropriate. 🙂

@@johncookson9751no it wasn't. It was written about the First World War. (It was published in 1918!)
So many false stories being peddled about it.
And the two flags were those that Bramwell Coles served under, The Salvation Army and the British flag. It's not about the flags the SA serves under.
