fun fact: in the anime's original japanese dialogue, spike and jet actually used the chinese phrase "qing jiao rou si" talking about the dish, so the third way with open flame it the way to go!
No way, that's really cool - thanks for letting us know
@@AlvinKZhou I thought you intentionally made that version to bring it all back to the original recipe.
Thanks for sharing, never knew that!
That’s probably because even in Japanese we use the Chinese name for the dish. It even uses the same characters even though they aren’t ones commonly used in Japanese.
@@miyoutakisawa5976 mapo tofu
I love that you not only did the obvious thing of doing bell peppers with beef _with beef,_ but included your grandpa’s recipe. Very wholesome and appreciated
Apparently that grandpa version IS the name they use in the original dub XD
That is really cool!
Nļooooooooo99ioò9 I 99
The look of absolute befuddlement on Andrew's face when Alvin walks in from the cold is absolutely priceless
And Alvin looking perturbed by the cold and not giving a care to Andrew's confusion 😂
5:24
You mean Beef'uddlement! Sorry I had to pepper that on 😆🤣🤣 oil leave now...
Yeah that shrug of "I dunno, I just work here"
@@gozzilla177 Beef'udderment 😆
this dude deserved more than buzzfeed's tasty, happy he joined the babish universe
The third dish looked absolutely incredible, honestly.
So pretty. Some of that over rice would be poyfect.
I think the beef was a bit overcoocked but still very nice
@@dask7428 that's the point though, it's meant to be super crispy and savory. The fact that it's flank steak and it's also so thinly sliced means it won't be tough but actually quite satisfyingly crunchy
I have to wholeheartedly agree. Even after just eating dinner that dish has my mouth watering and I'm almost wishing I had the ingredients on hand to try and make it right now, lol.
I love how this dish went completely full circle: the original Chinese dish (青椒肉絲) inspired the Japanese version of the same dish (チンジャオロース, made with thin strips of beef, a type of bell pepper called ピーマン, and bamboo shoots), which inspired the meatless version in the anime, which got translated into English as "bell peppers and beef" losing the connection to the Chinese dish, but despite that inspiring Alvin to make the original Chinese dish!
Yea, you can see the bamboo shoots in the anime! And it's wild the original peppers are super spicy, there's almost nothing notable about ピーマン except a bit of bitterness. (I've only had the Japanese version, not the original Chinese 青椒肉絲)
It's funny, I saw that last dish there and thought to myself "yknow what I bet this is closer to what they were actually eating in the show and they had to dumb it down for English speaking viewers in translation"
Looks like I was right xD
Man, i should finish cowboy bebop..
I've been a fan of Cowboy Bebop for decades and never made this connection.
Just for some added Chinese context, 青椒肉丝 (qing jiao rou si) is pretty dang cheap. It's usually pork, not beef, and you can still get a decent dish of it for 18 RMB (around 2.50) even in Shanghai. I've found it for even cheaper but it tends to be not great for any lower price.
The more flavorful version is 鱼香肉丝 (yu xiang rou si) and while still being fairly cheap is a lot tastier!
This is gonna be a great series! Think about trying the Mapo Tofu from Cooking Master Boy (中华小当家)
🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓🤓
Having been a fan of Chinese Cooking Demystified since they got started, I recognize a lot of the techniques in your grandfather's recipe, like passing the beef through oil. Finding out about that was a real game changer in my stir fry - it explained all the differences between my own cooking and what I remembered from the Cantonese restaurants I went to in high school.
Grandpa would absolutely be proud, not just because you cooked it well, but because you shared the story about it with us.
Every episode of "Anime with Alvin" should end with an eyecatch that says, _"See You, Space Chef..."_
we need now
This needs to happen

“You’re gonna carry that food”
Don't forget the jazzy bebop opening
The first I heard about this series I was looking forward to when you covered Cowboy Bebop. Gotta say I was not dissapointed. Love to see your new take on it with a family recipe, looks delicious!
Cowboy Bebop is by far the best anime. Ever. And I will fight anyone who says otherwise 😤
@@mrs.h2725 you're right and you should say it
@@mrs.h2725 after seeing that scene at the start of the episode, I've been officially convinced. The energy made me laugh a lot, and I want more of that :D
@@mrs.h2725 You will have very few takers I think because you are right, and it's no contest. However if anyone is silly enough to try, let me know. I want a piece of that action too.
Walking by Andrew without confrontation and leaving him in the dark was very Spike Spiegel.
And Andrew shrugging like what’s that all about was very Jet Black. Even looks like him Lol
I love this! Very reminiscent of the earlier Binging with Babish. I love Cowboy Bebob, bell peppers, beef, mushrooms, and old family recipes. It's an absolute win. And this seems easy enough for me to try.
The Bebop crew got a whole mess of mushrooms in "Mushroom Samba", so it's definitely fitting.
Fey swimming in the bathroom was always so funny and trippy.
Bad mushroom!
Jet talking to the bonsai always cracks me up. Who am I?
I think of Ein’s weird hopping.
@@hollowcat6756 no one ever mentions Spike's stair "climb" which is disappointing.
Well now i really want a series or some ongoing compilation of "dont tell Andrew what we've done"....Baffled by Babish

Bewildered with Babish
I'm sure Alvin's Grandpa is very proud. Hes not only following his passion, but hes keeping old foods and traditions alive, while expanding on them with modern means.
I’d honestly love to see Alvin and Babish tackle the food of Studio Ghibli - Ponyo Ramen, Spirited Away buns (alongside the massive feast for a milestone episode) - like the homemade bacon and eggs Babish made a while back for Howl’s Movinf Castle!
When Alvin cooks his Grandpa's dishes and the way he talks about him...it almost warms my cold, dead heart.
"almost"
Alright edge lord. But yeah the third dish looked amazing and it was a great video.
@@Oatmonke chill out m8, calling people edgelords probably isn't helping them
@@AmerZAC yeah I should probably be a bit more calm but I'm just a bit tired of stuff like it everywhere
@@Oatmonke no, you're right. People should realize that acting edgy isn't a cool view. It's just cringe and sad
Now we know why Alvin was wearing a heavy coat inside during the Spagball Botched episode! Mystery solved! And this dish looks delicious :9
Andrew didnt call his channel the "culinary universe" for nothing
I wonder if this was filmed before or after the bottle of champagne >_
Trust me they are. I love them with a dish of white rice
When Andrew has a better chopstick-holding technique than Alvin 🤣
Your grandpa’s recipe sounds incredible!! Thank you so much for sharing!
The food was one of my favourite parts about the show I’m so glad you’re doing this
This show made me wonder if maybe there was something to these whole "peppers" people keep eating. I was 13, I love mushrooms and peppers now ❤️
I found the show so boring though
Very informative. Method, not measurement. The trio concept is well balanced.
Method not measurment is the stir fry way
That kinda remind me of James Bond line, "shaken not stirred."
it's a very flexible recipe, want more meat? add more meat, want more sauce? add more sauce
want something that ain't bell peppers? pick a different vegetable(i would)
I love how he incorporated a vegetarian version. I usually eat meat, but it was nice to know whether I'm feeling meat or not I can still make this.
thank the anime, they only have that version bc in the show they couldn’t afford any meat…
@@chayceoldershaw8908 it's a really interesting concept to be completely honest. But that's just how inflation is sometimes
┐( ̄ヘ ̄)┌
It’s only because that’s the one from the anime
that’s the dish in anime.. bell pepper mushroom and beef without beef.
I'm a little late to the party but I just wanted to say this is one of many videos you have posted that solidified my love for cooking. There's something special about taking simple recipes from tv shows or online and adding your own spin onto them, then using the upgraded dish to compare and contrast with traditional recipes so you can change them to your liking; And there's something even more special about sharing said food with your friends. As an 18 year old aspiring chef and culinary instructor it makes me happy to see so many people in this field with so many different methods and cooking techniques/ideas, especially when they use ingredients I've never even heard of before. I'll definitely be using longhorn peppers in my next stir fry, if I can even find them around here 😂
I really really love how Alvin is finding his flavour (hehe) of the BCU. I really like how he explains things and builds an arch through AwA episodes. I can't wait to see more!
Actually mushrooms and green peepers are a great combination anyway. I sometimes fry them up together just in a bit of sunflower oil with a bit of salt and it's delicious. Regular boring standard mushrooms.
I prefer mushrooms and green onions!
Sesame oil is way better. Try it
@@GarrySkipPerkins I like olive oil best!
My entire life has led up to this moment. My thanks to you, honoring such a classic dish for us anime fans
I was just wishing the other day for another Anime with Alvin, perfect! I love that he showed 3 different ways to make this dish :)
You should make the Ganymede Rock Lobster next.
Don't forget the most important step: Let it sit for one year for the perfect flavor!
But who will be crazy as Radical Edward and actually eat it!
You are evil 💀
The Netflix show is like Bell Peppers and Beef without the beef.
Then you wouldn't call it Bell Peppers and Beef, would you?

I have dreamed about this episode for years, thank you for making it happen!
I clicked on this expecting Babish, not knowing about this new series. What a pleasant surprise! Thanks for covering this recipe. I love Cowboy Bebop and that bit with the bell peppers and beef has stuck with me for over a decade. Still makes me laugh today!
It was really sweet hearing how proud Alvin was with the final version of the dish.
you know, as someone who has an induction stove, I always assumed that the water at the bottom of my pan when cooking meat was always due to meat that didn't fully thaw (we often buy meat in bulk and freeze any that's gonna go off later in the week or the next) but now I have another culprit
Thanks Alvin
wrong though- induction is the hottest, most powerful outside a restaurant gas flame
it is a to cold pan and or to much produce in the pan...
The water's from overcrowding the pan, not the lack of heat. The water can't evaporate because it's getting trapped under the meat. He should've cooked it in batches if he wanted caramelisation without overcooking.
For what it’s worth, it’s not so much the induction as it is the wok. Woks are designed to move a lot which doesn’t do all that great when it needs to be in contact with a surface to get hot.
Like you would be able to get an excellent sear on induction with something like a stainless skillet or cast iron pan. Woks are one of the few exceptions where I think gas (especially a high heat outdoor burner) outperforms induction.
@@seanedging6543 not alot of the wok sits on the induction so not alot of heat is transferred to the wok but with a fire it wraps around it
@@seanedging6543 Actually, there are woks that go with convex induction stove. I believe they are wildly popular in Hong Kong.
I'm just happy to see someone else using the same "Turkey frier outside with a wok" setup I use for my stir frying.
This information will aid me in my future cooking endeavors
*I HAVE WAITED FOR THIS EPISODE FOR SO LONG*
Loved Grandpa’s recipe. Dishes and memories from eating them are some of my favorite ways of remembering my grandparents and the way they used to talk about their parents making it for them. Thanks for the recipe and the warm fuzzies
At some point, you have to do the bento box from Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train or the Rin Okumura special from the Blue Exorcist movie
Blue Exorcist in general is a goldmine for food ideas. A little ways in, the manga volumes start showing off what individual characters like having for lunch on the back covers.
Ditto to the bento box, it looks and seems so delicious

Mushrooms in the show are also hallucinogenic ;]

This is awesome! It was so cool to see your grandpa's recipe, thanks for sharing it!!!
This is my favorite episode in this series so far! Love your grandpa’s recipe.
When you think about it the mushrooms are something they would have had in excess after Ed's food run
Your grandfather's recipe looks glorious! I will be popping over to my local Asian market to pick up this style of pepper to make this immediately!
I’ve been waiting for y’all to do this one!! Thank you!
Again...just really love these episodes with Alvin. 🙂
This is seriously one of the best episodes on this channel
What if you made Uncle Moe's Million Dollar Birthday Fries from The Simpsons episode, "Bart Sells His Soul". I know it's just regular fries but can't hurt to use sparklers and say the Uncle Moe chant.
Either that, or see Babish flash-fry a Buffalo in 42 seconds.
No he needs to make Homer Simpson's donut. Or Marge's dim sum with 8 dipping sauces.
And Andrew needs to serve it to his crew on his hat and watch them eat them. I can expect Brad to really take his time.
No
My teef hurt.
This made me so happy. I love cowboy bebop. It's in my top 5. I've been waiting for someone to do some cooking from it. Thank you Alvin.
That looks so amazing, what a great video. Totally need to try this
Alvin... I hope you know we love every episode you put out. The more we see them, the more we want. Please do more. And more often 😅

I would love to see babish tasting some of your meals and getting his reactions
Goodness gracious, I have been looking for this recipe for forever! The incredible nostalgia that hits me every time I think about this dish... Can't wait to try it out for myself! Thank you very much for all three versions ^^

Cowboy Bebop is my boyfriend's favorite anime and today's his birthday so I made this and it came out amazing, he loved it 🥺 thank you for this video! So yummy!

Love that you did all these different versions. I feel spoken too
I HAVE BEEN WAITING YEARS FOR THIS
I have no idea what Alvin's face looks like but I am certain he is cute because his personality is just that adorable. 💗💗
Edit: got to the part where you see his face. I frickin knew it! Such a cutie.
Man, that last dish looks absolutely incredible!
I'm the proud owner of several woks and an outdoor wok burner like a jet engine, and I've very much given up on cooking beef or any other protein to a specific doneness, because everything ends up very done no matter what. Now I lean on chemical tenderization: slicing meat thin and quick-marinading with just a touch of baking soda does a great job.

Yeah but *Babish* didn't do this one, so it's an Asterisk for him in my book, not dissing Alvin so I guess I gotta accept it even tho I'm not happy.
I want to try mixing the three different dishes into some rice and maybe one or two other veggies.
Awesome! I really want to try that last recipe. Where do you find "longhorn peppers"? Are they called something else? I have found peppers that look the same but are called Fushimi or Cowhorn peppers. Would these be the same?
