All Children want to impress their parents but they don't want to put in the work they have to impress their parents. Your kid will not touch his book but he still would want to impress his parents. Don't encourage or disparge anybody for some random tests or exam, both things are necessary depending on various factors. For some saying you're not good enough is a motivator for some it can be emotional damage. So every opinion matters in some way , things like this are never right or wrong, every opinion can be acceptable at times.
Children can be spoiled pretty quickly so no I don't think it's a good idea to make them feel special unless they earned it. You can just treat them with their favourite food, not say you're little prince/princess.
