This is my first time hearing this song byJohn. I am in tears. I have grieved for many years over John's death. Even though I am so blessed by his videos and performances, I still grieve that he is no longer with us here on earth. He is the BEST! His singing and songs reflect his beautiful spirit. This song is absolutely amazing! I will listen to it often! It touches me profoundly!

This has always been my favorite song by John. I saw him in concert in 1985 when his popularity had waned and we had seats in the second row. No band or orchestra, just him and his guitars and his magnificent voice. When he did this song, I felt he was singing it just for me. I want this played at my memorial.

@@johnmatuszak1958 What a wonderful plan to have John's song played at your memorial! I've wished SO many times that he was still with us. I enjoy watching the video of his last visit to Alaska so much! His love of nature and his poetic soul and splendid songs and voice are such blessings to me! And I especially love this one because it's just him with his guitar and his heart singing.

I agree with everything you wrote! I loved watching the Alaska video too! This song touches me deeply every time I listen and watch John sing and play it. Like you, it's especially meaningful to me that it's just John with his guitar and his heart singing. I am delighted that my grandson, at 18, has become enthralled with some of John's songs and guitar playing. He has amazed me with how quickly he's learned to play the guitar. And he sings some of John's songs in the shower! I will always miss John Denver!

Listening to JD, looking out the school bus window at cotton fields. The Vietnam war was going on, my parents were divorcing, but here was this voice that meant so much to me and apparently the bus driver. I was watching the country music awards and say Charlie Rich disrespect John Denver, I didn’t totally understand it but I knew it was mean spirited. John Denver was such a gentle soul, how could anyone not see that.

I am paraphrasing here but it went something like this. You can’t save the whole planet but you can do your part. So when I walk instead of drive, recycle, try to make something last instead of pitching it and buying new, I am reminded of John’s statement. I still miss him and his friend Dan Fogelberg.

I was a huge fan of his way back in the 1970's . My own life then got real busy with a family and all that and I kinda fell away from his music. But whenever I was feeling real low and worn out, I could play a cassette, and later a CD, of his music...mostly from the 70's stuff that I loved so much, and my Soul and Spirit would get re-charged. I'm 65 now, and I can still get re-charged by listening to him singing & playing his songs. What a treasure he was, but so under appreciated and un-acknowledged for the superb singer / songwriter that he was. He was so much...so much more than just .." Yee, Haw... Thank God I'm a country boy" . Thank you for sharing this with us.

JOHN DENVER'S MUSIC WAS/IS THE SOUNDTRACK OF MY LIFE. I am 72 years old, and I have not been able to get past his death. Even to this date - 7/25/2020 - my heart aches - ACHES - for John to be alive and singing for us, for me. He will be 77 on 12/31/2020 .. will be - because he is not gone ... he is in our hearts, minds, and spirits, and in all of his music. This song - The Wings That Fly Us Home is so beautiful and makes me sob uncontrollably. OH!! If only he had added a little more fuel to one of the wings in that stupid plane ... he would not have died. I died that day, and I have not felt alive since 10/12/1997. His music is difficult for me to listen to because I want him alive. I want him singing in concerts, living his life, becoming more of who he was, being with his children, becoming a grandfather. My daughter feels my pain and is now teaching her children all about John (as I taught her and my son) - playing his music throughout the house (but through that darn Alexa machine!) My 9 y/o grandson cries when he hears This Old Guitar and he saw a video of John talking about how his grandmother got him a guitar. Guess what I bought my grandson for Christmas? That's what grandmothers are for .. to keep the spirit of love alive. If there is a God and if there is a heaven, I will look for John and my Father .. who is the reason why I am so close to John's music. My Father loved the Rocky Mountains and we were to move to Durango when I got out of grade school around 13 - but he died when I was 11. John Denver gave my Father back to me, but also gave me a sense of who I would become ... a naturalist, a humanist, a tree hugger, a lover of life and all peoples.

@@irenedevilliers1674 his new plane had two fuel tanks and to switch from one to the other required him to reach backward over his shoulder to reach the jury-rigged selector handle. He essentially took off with almost no fuel, intending just to come right back to the airport. Unfortunately the tank selected for takeoff had just enough fuel for the take off and then to about 400 feet above the water off Monterey, CA. When he reached back to switch tanks his right foot jammed the rudders right causing him to lose control of the aircraft and crash hard into the water.
If he would have accepted the loss of power, kept control of the aircraft and settled onto the calm ocean water, he probably would have survived and been able to swim to shore.
