I definitely like the concept of the book more than the execution. I think that, like, a romance slowly deteriorating into a horror would be really cool!! But the book (and honestly I had the same issue with Playground) feels very…like. reddit horror if that makes sense? Just throwing a bunch of gross/scary/shocking things at the wall to see what sticks.
Sorry, I hope this made sense! I wasn’t sure how to phrase this lol, I was just disappointed by this book.

you absolutely nailed what i disliked about it. it was too rushed for the descent to feel believable and for the tension to build. this should have been a longer story, i just don't think it works in this format. plus, it absolutely feels like a reddit horror story that people would bring up in every single "what's the most disturbing reddit post?" thread, especially the ending. it was just goofy.

In my head I meant sweet, fresh, and cute, but he quickly informed me that the word didn't mean what I thought it meant. I'm not necessarily mad about it though - I don't mind my k-pop music being a little fruity :p

I found you through the Playground video. I get curious about some disturbing or horrific books/media sometimes but then videos about it say “oh my goodness this book was so disgusting I will not even tell you about it” and I’m left like “but that’s why I watched this video. I’m not gonna read it. But out of morbid curiosity I want to at least hear what’s in it.”
THANK YOU for not only giving a great easy to understand summary, but your tone and humor is perfect. I CACKLED at the “you know the apples we peeled to make that pie? Well that wasn’t the only fruit in the kitchen” 😂
Edit: I saw another comment on The Slob mention that the way you tell the story makes it so much easier to listen to. I don’t really want to read it but again my morbid curiosity about it is there. I’m so sorry you have to read these but I love you so much for doing so. Also…. The slob is not only wildly mindlessly box tickingly disgusting, it’s so damn insulting too. To people with mental illness, to gay people, to sexual assault victims, to women, to intelligence, and to all authors because it’s so bad that it drags all literature down a bit by existing. And it’s greatest sin? It’s boring too.

I think the concept of treating a tapeworm as a baby sounds rather gross and disturbing
But this really doesn't work it's just not structured correctly and the writing is weak. plus the narrative of having this be chat logs and a police report is a cool idea but it's poorly done since why the fuck would this woman become obsessed with some online chick she hardly knows? Maybe if we understood she was mentally unwell or the relationship lasted longer and was more in depth It could work but sadly it's super half baked.
Also is it just me or does story feel like a creepypasta?
It's got that vibe specially since it's all based around chat logs.

i think the thing i hate about this book like just from your summary of it and not actually reading it myself - bc honestly i had my reservations about it from what i heard on tiktok - was that a lot of people kind of sold it on the fact that there were lesbians in it, which i feel like is a huge problem when it comes to advertising or recommending queer books on tiktok. these books are boiled down to how they have queer characters in them basically instead of talking about like. literally anything else about them, as if the inclusion of queer characters should be enough to sell it when that's just not good enough. i want good books with queer characters, not whatever i can pick up just because it was sold to me as being queer. i feel like this book is a great example of that bc it just seems so shallow and paced terribly with both of the characters coming off as crazy but one of them is a bit more crazy than the other one so that's basically the only conflict. though, idk whether to attribute zoe seeming crazy bc she is or bc of the bad portrayal of bdsm lol. there was a lot of potential here, bc i'm all for stories about messy women and queer characters being in different types of narratives other than the norm, but i feel like we were really robbed since there was no slow decline or build up into much of anything. this whole book feels like someone held it up to me and was like wow look at these two women aren't they fucked up oooo scary when like. i don't think these characters even needed to be women or wlw. basically this is not a lesbian book; this is a book with lesbians in it.
anyway i love your videos so far! i can't wait to see what other books you cover! you're really funny and cool. ❤

if u haven't read fluids by may leitz i def recommend it. i finally read it yesterday after being told to read it a bunch of times and it was like the perfect amount of fcked up. the characters are lesbians and it makes sense that they would be like their identity and sexuality are there for a reason and it is written in such a beautiful way i was gut punched a few times which i didn't expect. the timeline is A LOT shorter than larocca's book but the story doesn't feel off cuz may leitz does an amazing job showing u these women are not all there in the head right from the start so it feels realistic. you're always like "of course they would do that of course duh". it was so so good ♡

    • @chocomelo454
      @chocomelo454 11 месяцев назад +8

yeah. even just from summary I expected it to be a case of a cishet man preying on a vulnerable queer woman, since the author themselves is queer (gay and trans, iirc nb using he/they pronouns) and would've had so much stuff to work with for that. bc to me someone taking advantage of a vulnerable queer person is one of the greatest horrors. I think that's what was such a flop.
if it were up to me I would have the ending be that. Zoe faked her identity to hurt Agnes - like how adults will fake their identity to hurt kids online. (but make it clear I'm not pulling a transphobic. I'm pulling a "why are cishet men so horrible to queer women and trans men?" bc I get it) bc that would be to me more scary.
and j also would've let Agnes live that too I'm too merciful I'd go "oh sweet baby, you will live" and just let the idea of how she now has to cope with everything that's happened be the disturbing sad stuff.

I haven't even gotten to the horror yet, but I'm already getting 'I googled BDSM once' vibes from this guy - a bunch of kinks, lifestyles and dynamics all thrown together to seem 'intense', the dominant introducing said mess of kinks to the submissive in the form of a contract without any prior negotiation, the dominant deciding what the sumbissive "gets out of" submitting to them, without hearing it from the submissive themselves.
The dramatic lead up of 'my thoughts scare me', only to be followed by basic Sadist fantasies. I get that people who aren't into kink, or in this case, S&M, might feel like the things Zoe mentioned are really intense, but anyone who is into S&M would probably find her description of the bondage and the whipping pretty standard. It's not even my thing, but it seemed tame to me, with what I've learned about BDSM.

yeah soooo. i’m involved in the community and this book is so beyond inaccurate, it seems like the author didn’t do much research or ask people with any personal experience for their perspective. when i heard zoe mention her “scary thoughts” i was like oh, that’s it? i mean her talking about killing agnes, now that was concerning. but some rope and some whipping, now i’ve grown up reading ao3, that’s nothing compared to some of the fucked up things i’ve seen.
this book could’ve been a really good concept for psychological horror although that also probably wouldn’t be too great for the reputation of the kink community either. the average person tends to think of shit like this when in reality it’s a bunch of nerds who like d&d or cosplay or anime or sci-fi movies or magic: the gathering, it’s not whips and chains 24/7 for most people, and while ofc there’s bad apples in any community, i’ll be so honest when i say i’ve seen the healthiest relationships among kinksters. very open communication, respect, and a strong emphasis on the importance of boundaries and consent. unfortunately media rarely depicts it this way which is unfortunate…

Honestly I wish it went for more of a supernatural element to spice it up because imagine if Agnes did like a demonic ritual to get pregnant and the demon baby feeds on her and even looks like a tapeworm that would be pretty creepy especially that if it human features. 300% more creepy if it had a mix of Agnes's & Zoe's features like an actual normal baby would.

I do remember reading it at first because (surprise surprise) everyone on tiktok was like "oh my god its the most disturbing book ever 😔" and I'm a curious bitch, but halfway through the book I was just laughing at what was happening, I cant tell you how flabbergasted I was at the whole Phineas tapeworm child... What a nightmare but not for the reasons you migth think. Also it is unfortunately true about splatterpunk books and female characters who all want to be mother (Cows, Dead Inside, both books that also left me flabbergasted and wanting to punch a wall solely bc of how they were written rather than the contents of the book themselves...) one book that I think could be interesting to make a video on is Woom, I feel like its one of the only splatterpunk books that actually didnt hate on women? Honest to god funniest/most frustrating part about this book is that they literally never meet irl so like... there's no reason for Agnes to actually do most of these things. Like Zoe can't actually confirm Agnes is doing this, and Agnes could easily fake all of it. She could literally put her underwear back on once she's taken a pic of it on the floor, and she could be chilling playing candy crush or something during the hold your breath section. Zoe never meets her, never calls her, never facetimes her, nothing, so she can't prove that Agnes ISN'T doing all that. I get the stakes of this is that if Agnes doesn't do it, Zoe won't send her money, but considering Zoe has access to ALL HER BANK ACCOUNTS AND SAVINGS, that's pretty fuckin weak sauce. It'd be one thing if Zoe just took all of Agnes' money out of the account because she disobeyed/lied, but literally all it is is Zoe sends her money to do weird shit.
I think the book would have worked much better if instead of it being toxic lesbians, it was just that Zoe's a troll figuring out like how far she can push a clearly disturbed Agnes to do gross stuff. The leap from "leave your panties on the floor" to "literally kill a salamander with a rock" is giving edgy reddit teenager, but would also make her backing away with the tapeworm stuff make sense. Would it make the book good? Probably not, but the twist of Zoe not being real and actually a bored edgelord troll who chickened out after finding out how unhinged Agnes actually is would be very interesting.
(Also, that whole section where she describes what she wants to do to Agnes, pretty sure I've read a decent handful of fics like that on ao3, and they were pretty chill. If your dark thoughts are tamer than the tags on ao3 then I don't think you know what dark thoughts are.)

I'm familiar with the U-haul memes in the queer community because of how fast some lesbian relationships escalate but this is ridiculous. I don't think Eric LaRocca is a bad writer, there are some paragraphs in there that I really liked, but the book as a whole is a mess, it feels so sloppy the way he pieces together the story.
Also, I understand the limitations behind the format he chose to narrate the story in but c'mon, he at least could have added a scene or two where the characters meet irl so we the readers wouldn't get whiplash when Agnes got obssesed and possesive with a complete stranger all of a sudden, he could have Agnes write yet another email like reminiscing how it all went down but no, all we had were boring chats.
Anyway, I wasn't aware this book was inspired by Sluts and now I'm angry that I didn't read that one first because I'm 20% into Marbled Swarm from the same author and thus far I think Dennis Cooper's writing style is much more engaging and fun (convoluted and weird as well but whatever I'd take what I can get).

I read the book and found myself mostly puzzled as to why things went from 0 to 100 within a couple of pages??? Like sure they are lesbians so the U-haul vibes would fit but it’s just off. Maybe it’s because you can tell that this was written by a man.
Also initially I thought the stories that Zoe told Agnes would have some sort of thematic mirror in the novel but it was just random disturbing shit.

Yes, this is very wrong about all things kink and BDSM. Keep in mind, these topics are lesser known so someone can just not do any research, write a story about it, and the reg reader wont know any better. Also let's be honest, just like how someone can be queer phobic and purposely show someone who is queer in an untrue and hateful light, you can have people that are kink phobic and do the same there. I don't know why someone would hate someone for knowing what they want out of a sex life(if the BDSM is even sex related), but some people really are just that horrible. And ya, that feels like the main problem here. A whole lot of interesting and good ideas, but it's all bogged down by the writer talking out of their butt. I would like to say an abusive relationship can form fully through just online messages. That isn't actually that far out there at all, but it's not in the way the book suggests.

    • @mainmorpho
      @mainmorpho  Год назад +7

i watched a bit of an interview the author did on youtube and they were saying how the reviews calling their book bad helped with its popularity and it was such a mean spirited thing to say i feel like bc dude you portrayed not only gay women as clingy and psychotic (which would have been fine if there was any other quality to the characters but they were just walking stereotypes) but also the kinksters as horrible people who are wishing for each other's downfall. don't be proud of that wtf. it sucks that nowadays in the mainstream media we either have people who show staright up abuse as kink or we have people who shame others for having kinks. hellish times
also with the toxic online relationships i think my disbelief in that is just a personal thing and the fact that it was so rushed didn't help either. i mean i'd never take orders from someone i've never even met irl bc what if they're like lord farquaad how am i gonna cope with that yknow

@@mainmorpho it's actually so very odd and mean in this specific case. In the book as you are pointing out the main character has been abandoned by her mom and family for being gay. This is what isolates them and then puts the advents of the plot into motion. So the book is aware of the great harm that queer phobia can cause. It points it out to the reader, but then it goes and becomes queer phobic and kink phobic anyways. So the writer KNOWS it's wrong, KNOWS the harm that can happen, but just doesn't care. That what really gets me here.

I read this book back in February of this year. Zoe's behavior was disgusting but it felt like an unnecessary 180. She went from a kind-hearted and selfless person for helping Agnes to immediately wanting to hurt Agnes within days of their relationship. There were no signs into Zoe's behavior at all besides the small moment where Zoe says "My thoughts scare me". Would've rather had the author write in a whole new character to be this mean, degrading hurtful person to Agnes if he was planning to make Agnes suffer anyways. But overall, I loved your summary and takes on this book. Can't wait to see what you review next!

    • @chocomelo454

I wonder if maybe he intentionally did that? since Zoe isn't able to see Agnes through the screen and could be pretending to be someone else, or having had bad intent from the start.
I've heard of people doing that. acting kind and selfless and then suddenly, flipping to a cold and cruel person. usually after what they get what they want from someone.

I think the reason why the whole thing feels so rushed and half assed is because the author quite literally describes writing it all in five days.
What is up with authors taking pride in writing so fast? It just makes for a shittier product everytime.
Edit: Wait, people have accused him of stealing this idea from another author? Because his other novela "You have lost a lot of blood" one of the major themes is how the serial killer is also a plagiarist and he and his boyfriend have talks about "what is actually plagiarism, what is a tribute, what is a reference", which was SO completely out of place and made no fucking sense not even with the ending revealing the killer was a plagiarist all along because... who the fuck cares? This guy has been killing men up, down, left, right, the fuck do I care that his shitty poetry and his also shitty novela was stolen from his victims, the absolute fuck matters. But adding the context of the author being accused of plagiarism himself now makes it SO funny, like, my dude was really so badly affected by the comments that he quite literally wrote a whole ass book just to wax philosophical 101 nonsense about authorial intent as some kind of weak ass response.

Especially her having a manic episode at the end.
