  • Check out the Features and a Review of the Gateway Drum Smoker. Change your BBQ cooking style from 'Low and Slow' to 'Hot and Fast'. The Gateway Drum Smoker is used by major BBQ Competition Teams with amazing success, all around the world.
    Instead of cooking a Brisket at 225f for 10-12 hours the Gateway Drum cooks at 300f and finishes a Brisket in 5-6 hours. Which means a full nights sleep :-)

    Great video man, I got one for Christmas I haven't got a chance to lite it yet but might be the first person to have one in Ireland. Can't wait for the next video man.

      Thanks Christopher. We are playing with a rack of ribs today, hopefully they go well. Let me know how your first cook goes.

    I have been seriously thinking about pulling the trigger for one of these. I like the idea of hot and fast. I’ve heard great things about the Gateway Drum Smoker’s and how they perform in competition.

      Same here, heard some great feedback. We have ribs on tomorrow and will be smoking a Brisket during the week. Very excited.

    The PBC does everything the Gateway does. Cooks hot and fast. And at half the price. Good video. Remember that the PBC is Porcelain coated and would not peel the paint anyway.

    • @HectorsSmokeHouse
      @HectorsSmokeHouse  4 года назад +3

      Hi David, I have a PBC as well as the Gateway. I've enjoyed the PBC but it's smaller, doesn't have a thermometer, has poor temperature control, has the intake at the bottom, smaller charcoal basket, no wheels and much lighter made. I'll do a video over the next month or two and will compare them both, including the cook. Don't get me wrong, I love my PBC but I think this is a couple of levels above.

      Hi Robert, unfortunately I've not seen the Hunsaker over here in Australia. Just on first pass the vortex basket looks very intriguing. The multi shelves look great. But not sure about the floor mount air intake, I like the height of the gateway intakes and I prefer the look of the Gateway the Hunsaker looks like my trash bin 😁 With those big wheels at the bottom, I'm not having a go, just that was the first thing that sprung to mind when I looked 😁 I'd definitely like to have a play with one, if I ever got the chance over here.

    Howdy From Montana 🐴🐴🐴
    Would like to know the guage of the steel. Would like a better look at the bottom - inside and out. Didn't really get to see the char basket and ass catcher. Would like to know about the paint types and if it can be had with powder coating. Will they supply a domed lid? Would like to know if the wheels are screwed into a welded on bracket or through holed into the bottom. -------Thankx

      Hi, I'll try and measure the thickness later today, it's hot at the moment. It might be difficult with my mic, due to the curves but I'll have a go.
      If you send me a message on Facebook, I can send through some photos of the basket compared to a charcoal chimney.
      They have a couple of models with a different coating that goes to 1000f, I think they are powder coated but you are limited by colour. The truth is, I won't use mine past 325f, so it won't be a problem.
      I don't think they do a domed lid, I've never seen one.
      The wheels are screwed into a welded bracket. It is predrilled and then you use self tapping screws. Very simple and quick.
      Hope this helps 😁

      Thankx Mucho for the quick reply! This baby really looks the the best on the market. My interest in the wheels was because through screw holes in the bottom will just add one more place for deterioration. I might also want to replace the four casters with a two wheel trolley-type setup that would allow tipping the barrel back and moving it hand truck style. That would make negotiating stairs a breeze. I would likely want to put some kitty litter between the barrel walls and fire ring to absorb any splatter.
      I would appreciate hearing about any mods you might do. Side table, hinge, trolly wheels, better handles, domed lid, et cetera.
      -Again, Thankx for the review and response!

    Hi great video. Can i use only wood instead of charcoal?
    Im looking for a cooker where i can also use good quality wood. Let me know your suggestions. Thanks n Regards

    • @HectorsSmokeHouse
      @HectorsSmokeHouse  4 года назад

      No, wood wouldn't work in here. This needs charcoal or briquettes.

    Dave, the Gateway web site now (mid-April, 2020) shows that they have apparently added the word "Sizzle" to their model names and all models are shown as "Coming Soon." Is your Gateway a "Sizzle" model? If not, do you know what features or capabilities have been added to the (apparently) new models?

    • @HectorsSmokeHouse
      @HectorsSmokeHouse  4 года назад

      Hi Paul, mine is definitely not a sizzle model. I don't know what the sizzle means but I'll definitely going to go and see if I can find anything.

    • @SOLDOZER

      @@HectorsSmokeHouse "Sizzle"model is low temp glossy paint. "Straight Up" models are flat 1000 degree paint.

  • @McDonaldPhotography
    @McDonaldPhotography 4 года назад +1

    So why can’t you cook hotter in other smokers? Also I’m sure you could have built one pretty easy and perhaps more fun, which is Alfred all the essence of UDS.

    • @HectorsSmokeHouse
      @HectorsSmokeHouse  4 года назад +1

      Hi Andy, you can certainly cook hot and fast in other smokers. Stick burners need constant feeding, Cabinet smokers have a history of having fat fires at high temps if not kept clean. These are easy to transport and have heaps of history of cooking BBQ Championship quality food.
      I could definitely build something but for the price but I can't be arsed. I value my own personal time very highly and when factored in it would be a similar cost. I'd rather spend my free time making RUclips videos 😁 Also I wouldn't be sure it would produce BBQ as well as the demonstrated history of the Gateway. BUT if someone has all of the gear and is a handy metalworker, they should definitely have a go at building a UDS.

    #1 A Gateway Smoker or any Ugly Drum Smoker can and WILL maintain a 225 degree temp.
    Low and Slow is easily accomplished on this rig. I do it all the time. Hot and Fast is NOT = to Low and Slow.
    #2 The real benefit(s) are a unique taste because the fat drips on the coals and creates a moist and hot environment. Furthermore, the charcoal basket can cook for 12-18 hours depending on ambient temperature. Moreover, one can get a ridiculously POTENT smoke favor that is pronounced in the final product. You will NEVER accept pulled pork again unlesss it's done in a drum.
    I've got about 20 yrs experience...an ugly drum can be built for less than $50 by the most mechanically inept and incompetent. Temp control can be accomplished by adding an aftermarket controller such as the CyberQ.
    The flavor accomplished in a drum is simply unmatched. That's why they continue to win BBQ contests (yes, even Memphis in May).
