    Long time ago around midnight I walked into a nightclub in Paris with a pretty girl. There was a piano and to show off to the girl I asked if I could play a tune and the waiter said sure. I played some boogie woogie. When I finished, I got a nice round of applause. One guy was standing right next to me, also applauding. It was Joe Turner. I had no idea that the nightclub, Calvados, was his regular gig. Knowing who he was, I was both shocked and embarrassed because obviously I wasn't 1/1000th the pianist he was.
    He said something like, "Very nice. Slide over and let me give that a try." Sitting on the bench with him, he started. Of course, he was magnificent.
    After that, I went back a couple of times every week every time as long as I was in Paris, and every time he'd introduce me to the crowd and offer to let me play something. I was young-and shameless, I guess-and always took him up on it. And then he'd show how it was played by a real artist.
    He was incredibly kind and welcoming and we got to be friends. Before I had to return to the States I bought him a present, a black leather three-cigar case, the best I could find, from Hermes. He took his cigars from his pocket and loaded it right up.
    What a privilege it was to spend so much time watching such a master play. Talk about dumb luck.

    Joe Turner is the man who gave Art Tatum his first chance in a major spotlight when Turner was the pianist in singer Adelaide Hall's orchestra and Tatum was still just a prodigy of local renown in Toledo, Ohio.

    • @fisharmor
      @fisharmor Год назад +2

      That's interesting since Turner's timing here is slightly off, the way Tatum's was, but in a different way. Tatum usually seems like he'll never make the beat on time but he always does, but Turner sounds like he's a 32nd note ahead but he's not.

    The intro is Joe's own, as far as I can tell, repeated without improvisation. The first theme is indeed " Keep off the Grass " . The second theme is from James P's Steeplechase Rag / Over the Bars. Both are repeated as played the first time without improvisation. Same for the the third theme. Overall, this is based upon James P's 1944 recording.

    • @Skybowll
      @Skybowll  7 лет назад +5

      Yes indeed it is a bit of a medley. The development of the original goes into a lot of falling chromatic chords. It looks as though JT thought he could improve by using some of JPJ's other material.

    • @kafenwar
      @kafenwar 7 лет назад +8

      The first theme is Old Folks Shuffle by Fats Waller and Clarence Williams

    • @devrolijkekoster

      Now that I come to think of it, the first strain of Old Folks Shuffle is clearly borrowed from the second strain of James P. Johnson's 1917 Steeplechase Rag too.
