Life is about personal, sometimes painful growth. You have left the salt as a stronger more capable person. Anxiety builds great memories, strong mental muscles. You should share in the chores you both found hard without the other. Two independent people working together can do amazing things. Thanx for the show.

As someone who does landscape photography for fun, it looks to me like the image of your bus in that location would be very cool to the eyes of any photographer, for the purposes of photography. A renovated old skoolie is an object that attracts attention, especially in that setting.

I feel the same as you when my husband has to leave home for work. Being in a stick-built house, it still feels like something is just "off" when he's not here. I think that's what happens when you have a good partner and friend and you work together so well. When he is gone it's like one hand is always tied behind your back! You CAN do it alone, but it's so much easier with your best friend.

The sign: Do not drive on the flats due to wet conditions.
Natalie: That car thats 1/4 the weight of my bus did it. Imma do it too.
    The bus: Gets stuck
The sign: I tried to tell you
Glad you got out without needing a tow. And at least you had fun doing it.

Well done Natalie! You rocked the situation and overcame the problems! Being on your own for a time is always a bit of a test, even more so when you're so used to NOT being alone and having to make all the decisions solo and do all the work too. Jimmy should be proud of how well you did!!

  • @heidiagner5091

I was thinking how dumb it was for you to go against what the sign said….. then I remembered some really poor decisions I have made in my life…. So good for you for getting yourself unstuck. We learn by our mistakes and thank goodness for having a guardian Angel helping you through those unfortunate decisions.

Yay. I'm so glad that Jimmy's back. But you have proven yourself out there today. Being able to get the bus out from being stuck. And it's good to know you are pretty aware of your surroundings. Not taking a chance on mixing in with people you don't know. It's always better to be on the defensive side. Safety first.

HI! Natalie: You did well getting unstuck. The secret to getting unstuck - is to not get stuck in the first place. But everybody gets stuck sometime. In the future, when you get stuck, don't spin the wheels. The wheels spin because you don't have any traction. So spinning faster will only only dig you deeper. To get unstuck your wheels need to roll, not spin. Roll back and forth slowly, switch between forward and reverse gear. Each time try gently to go a little farther. In the future it is good practice, if your wheels spin, stop and get out and see why they are spinning. There might be a rock or limb you didn't see blocking one wheel. Traction boards are good to have. But they can be too thick depending on the situation. I use sheets of expanded metal sheets or mats. With either traction boards or expanded metal mats, it is good to have some steel pegs to pound through into the ground to help hold them in place. 8 to 10 inch minimum. But on the salt flats I'd say 12 or 14 inch or more. Get a good steel hammer to pound in the pegs. It wouldn't hurt to have 20ft or more of cable or chain. Or even some poly rope a half inch or bigger in diameter in case some one is near who can pull you out. Remember the old scout motto - Be prepared! But as far as the salt flats, I would recommend you STAY OFF! Watch some of the Heavy D videos online. They've gotten big trucks stuck on the salt flats. Everyone that gets stuck out there says the same thing - it looked like it was solid. And it is good practice if you know where you are headed is rather sketchy, go with another vehicle. Hope this helps in the future.l

    Off road survival tips
If you're goin offroad in remote conditions...ya wanna prepare, your life may depend on it. First off, make sure you have a good map, compass and directions of the area. Make sure you have adequate food and water for extended periods and water purification abilities. A very recent story happened to Ron & Beverly Barker in Nevada April 2022. Driving an RV in rural mountainous roads and got stuck out of phone service. They unhooked the car to drive to safety, then got that stuck. Being elderly they couldn't walk to safety and sat in the car for about 9 days. Ran out of gas, had no water/food she had to use a walker and a mask to gather and melt snow to survive. Ron couldn't walk after a few days and died of dehydration in his wifes arms only 1/2mi or so from their RV. She sat there for 26hrs waiting for rescuers who finally arrived after a search.
Make sure your vehicle has good frame mounted tow points. Get something like a 12k Badlands Winch either installed or portable mount on your vehicle by a hitch mount etc. Have an air compressor that's at least $100+, so it doesn't take 3 days to fill a tire. Carry a Jerry can of fuel, a little $20 fuel pump and hoses with power wire with clamps, long enough to reach your battery allowing transfering fuel.
Have some basic recovery gear, traction boards, 30' strap/tow rope, (4-5) 3/4" shackles, soft shackles, (2) 8' tree saver straps, a 50-100' steel cable with a snatchblock, even a cumalong may come in handy and watch some vids on using them, practice with them. Watch vids on burying a log or tire to use as a land anchor if there's no trees. Always have plenty of food/water and fire making tools in case. Have a couple of water filtering straws and purification tablets. Make sure to have a short handled shovel. And a set of 100% Copper wire jumper cables. NOT CCA(Copper Clad Aluminum)
Luckily these days we have technology to aid us. So use it to our advantage. The electric scooters these days have miles of range and may get you down a road faster and easier to safety. They also make a great option for travel while in a city. Giving you miles of range for activity or small errands. They're also very compact taking little space. If the road looks sketchy...buzz down 5 mi and check it out.
If you have a diesel in your vehicle think and plan for cold weather hard starts in the middle of no where.
Most of these diesels have or can have a Block Heater installed. They draw about 1000w and can greatly increase the likelihood of your engine starting in the cold. Plug it in for 3-4hrs before starting and it will help a lot. The problem comes from being able to supply that much power if you're off grid. I always recommend a generator backup. Many can run on Propane which won't go bad from storage. Diesel Generators like Onan are also a good option, common on motor homes. Otherwise kits available to convert almost any gas generator over. Gas these days doesn't store well and goes bad drying in the carburetor leaving powdery deposits which may prevent it from starting when you most need it. At a minimum turn the fuel supply off and let it run out of fuel, use a gas stabilizer.
Another good option is wire in a battery maintainer. Then plug it in for a few hours so your batteries are nice and topped off when you try to start. Having your batteries at full charge greatly helps turn a cold engine over. They only cost around $25 and are usually automatic. So when batteries reach full charge it will shut off. It's a very off grid friendly option. A 1.5A auto maintainer will draw around 30 Watts while charging so very minimal draw even on a small battery/solar system and a minimal investment. The cold drops the battery voltage as the temps drop. So keeping them on a battery maintainer keeps the voltage topped and your best chance of starting a cold diesel engine with minimal required.
There's also Personal Locator Devices for fairly cheap these days, some even have messaging capability. Use an Android App like GPS Status or similar that can get your Exact coordinates without phone service. Do a Screenshot of the areal view of the area so you have some idea of direction. Toss a compass in the glovebox. Get a Phone Booster like WeBoost and install it properly.
If you're gonna be in a state for a while look up and join a FB group called 4x4 Rescue (state name). They are a group o f mostly experienced offroad volunteers that help rescue people either off road or on the road with basic break downs. The groups are only for rescues though not general chat. You can also join the car and truck groups for the state or area you're in. Ask around for reputable service locations etc.
When you're miles out in the middle of nowhere with questionable communications. YOU are responsible for yourself and can't rely on someone coming along to give you a jump start. Or waiting for your engine to magically start. Plan backups for your backups, 2 is 1 and 1 is none. People have died agonizing deaths being trapped out in the middle of nowhere after a break down etc. I've seen multiple vids of Digital Nomads stranded out in the middle of nowhere in snow and cold when their diesel wouldn't start.
The life you save may be your own. Or hopefully everything will be just fine and you may run across someone else needing help.
I was recently on a long roadtrip. 1 point I was in a fairly remote National Park. Nobody but me and a bus family out there. I was leaving the following morning. The full size bus got stuck in some mud. I was prepared for myself, so grabbed a strap and yanked em out saving them a $4-500 Tow bill.

That was always a risky thing to do, because of the weight of your vehicle. Your double tyres at the back probably helped you get out. Glad you made it.

That's what I was concerned about, the Salt flats are wet on top of sand. Glad you were able to get un stuck. I've seen on Diesel Dave the rescued a stuck bus out there.

The mud reminded me of the snow we have to deal with in Michigan. The same escape techniques apply. :-) Backing up and momentum are your friends. :-) In future, you might use that exercise mat as a traction pad.

What's an adventure without a little trouble. You learned a valuable lesson though you learned what to do if you get stuck in the mud. Next time you won't panic as much and hopefully be prepared because it's inevitable that it will happen again.

Alone is great, having your best buddy is better!! Everytime my husband drives of to work or where ever, I think what if he doesn't come home. It's a horrible voice, but I just think to myself that's because I love him same with my kids. 🥰 I wouldn't of gone out on the salt flats, so good for you. And for getting yourself out too!

Also glad Jimmy is back now and you can continue on together. It always stinks when you have to be away from your significant other but now you have stories to share of your individual adventures.

Just wanted you to know that Salt Lake is always in the top 3 safest cities in the country. You would have been totally fine talking to people and maybe letting them have a look in your bus. However, I do understand being alone out there and not being used to being alone. Hope you had fun in our State, we have the most beautiful Parks and outdoor stuff there is, thanks for visiting!
