- Loblaws is facing backlash once more, after the company sent out text messages encouraging customers in Ontario and Nova Scotia to "skip the line" at their local farmers' market and visit their stores instead.
This comes just two months after thousands of people across the country boycotted Loblaws stores in response to the company's soaring profits amid rising costs for consumers.

Regardless of what you think about the poorly executed statement, supporting local farmers and small businesses in the food industry is critical to the diversification of food options.
Love the farmers market in Waterloo.
And if most of that food was actually produced locally, that would be a good thing- but it's not. A lot of this food comes from the same place as the food in the grocery stores.
Sorry, being one of those heavily taxed Canadians who actually pays for all of Trudeau and Singh's free stuff for freeloaders, I have no time to peruse the little farmers markets. Do you even work?

Don't tell anyone but a lot of, "farmers markets" get their produce from the same place loblaws gets their produce from. The sellers claim its farm fresh and sell it at the farmers market at premium price. I was at one market where, "farmer Gerpeet" was busy peeling off the produce stickers at the farmers market to sell as just picked. IF YOU DIDNT PICK THE PRODUCE YOURSELF DONT BELIEVE THAT IT IS TRULY FARM FRESH

That's why I only use farmers markets that are organized and prohibit vendors from selling anything they don't either make or produce themselves.
It's usually pretty easy to tell. Too many varieties of food and fruit, not providing carrots and onions with the fresh leaves, and using identical varieties that supermarkets have are pretty dead giveaways.
the words "farmers Market" has evolved as a marketing tool.....just to draw people in to buy the same stuff that you get at no frills and food basics....and other stores.
Farmer's Markets are more than just a source of buying and selling. It's a social gathering where you meet people. Customers see the faces of the people who grow and harvest the produce. Grocery stores don't have that. You know what you're getting and from where. It's a whole different atmosphere. It's community.

For the record, my local grocery store DOES do this. They actually have a deal with some of the local farms around the area. Have even seen the trucks pull up and have gotten so excited. The produce lasts for weeks in the fridge because it really is locally sourced and fresh. My strawberries lasted for 3 weeks and were still good. That says it all. As the fresher the produce the more nutrients it contains.
@@gigi6374 If your strawberries lasted for 3 weeks, they were sprayed with something or picked too early. Not only that, all produce loses nutritional value the moment it's picked. Take this from someone who grows strawberries.

Is this really newsworthy? I mean, honestly if you are so outraged by this, then you really need to have more things going on in your life. There are MILLIONS of people who cannot afford to eat each day, and you want to get upset over a cheeky text message? You do know that a lot of the produce at the farmers market is not sourced in Canada, right? Meaning it is not locally grown. At my local supermarket they have a deal with some of the small farmers around this area and you can buy fresh produce and know exactly where in Alberta it was grown. They even list the famers name. yes, it is a bit of a markup, BUT the produce stays fresher for longer- that is the true sign of something locally grown compared to something being shipped in.
The thing is farmers markets are mostly a summer thing, plus quite pricy compared with a supermarket
and they're selling fruits and veggies from california and mexico. they buy bulk at the ontario food terminal and jack the price up at farmers markets. CBC did a story on it.

you are correct, they buy produce from California and Mexico at the Ontario Food Terminal then sell it at farmer's markets. CBC did a story on fake farmer's markets.

I buy a ton of produce each week. There's no way in Hell I can spend 3x the amount of money at a farmer's market. Most of the stuff isn't even fresh from the fields. They get it from distributors.
Exactly. If you were two hours north of Toronto you could expect actual local produce. Most of these GTA supposed farmers markets aren’t farmers at all. Picked up the produce at the food terminal, took the labels off and brought it to this market at 3x the price.

Compete or die - it's called 'capitalism'. Just goes to illustrate the glaring lack of competition in Canada. We live in a rural place now and enjoy buying local. It's often the same price but better quality than some big-box store, and goes directly to local farmers who have been farming this land for a very long time.

sells same products for almost twice the price and sometimes even more.
Mostly in Canada its not like real farmers selling their own products - for cheap.
Go to Italy, Spain, France - where ever you like - and you ll notice yourself what I mean
I love how people only say "mostly in Canada" as if you have any idea what goes on in our hundreds of cities...or even in every corner of our big cities. We have farmer markets all over..some are expensive..some are cheap. And it always depends on crop, timing, season etc.

in Vancouver we have a chain called Kins...they only sell vegs and fruits,,,half the price of superstore and better quality,,goes to show how much their mark up is.

Huh? How is Loblaws screwing you over the price of bread? I sometimes buy the weird stuff at 50% off, for something different. Mostly we make it at home, in a breadmaker. takes about the same time as making a pot of coffee.
George Weston and anyone associated with this attempt to sway the public to purchase produce from their stores, should be ashamed of themselves! And aside from this low level, despicable act, a good portion of their produce originates from south of the US Canada border. And you know, as any good Canadian should, you support local first! It’s time to send out a message and boycott this grocery chain.

I have been to a couple of farmers markets and it wasn’t more affordable or better quality. And who’s to say they are truly local. No frills is a great option for me but those who want to boycott loblwas all the power to you.

I see nothing wrong with that text. Farmers markets are more expensive than they appear. Plus the one in Belleville, you can tell some of the produce comes from no frills.

Loblaws and no frills are actually fairly expensive so far as grocery chains go. It's a person's choice to spend more money at the market or not. They don't need texts from greedy corporations explicitly telling them not to support small businesses

Boycott roblaws
I intend to eventually grow my own food. Nofrills is going to have to do a better job convincing people to buy their food if they want more customers.
look into urban agriculture and permaculture food forests. Essentially perennial plants that keep producing food, planted in layers - nut or fruit producing trees, peas or beans climbing them, berry bushes, stuff like asparagus, rhubarb, carrots, potatoes, low effort crops that are easily replicated too. They become self sufficient essentially over time as the trees feed the ground it's foliage to nourish the soil. They mimic nature's actual forests, just produce tons of food in a small space.

I remember when we had surpluses of vegetables and we would just take them to the managers at local grocery stores, and they would sell them. Of course, you can imagine the problems if a farmer/gardener used twice the insecticide on his crops. But then the big box stores source from foreign countries, and sold raisins from Turkey dusted with lead powder, for decades.
I have decided to permanently boycott Loblaws and all it's other stores - No Frills, Supercentre, Shopper's Drug Mart.
I support our local farmers market weekly it’s something I look forward and enjoy running into friends and meeting new people.

Farmers markets are as much about social interaction, and the freshest produce. They also provide crafters a place to showcase their products.
Is Loblaws hurting that much? Perfect example of trying to put someone down but instead lifting them up. It's like Loblaws WANTS people to boycott their stores.
I loathe thieves but with the bread scandal and this not to mention the gouging during covid I have no problem with anyone taking the chance of stealing at their stores.

Actually, NoFrills makes it so that lower-income Canadians can eat decently. It would be a disaster for them if the chain disappeared. The stores are individually and locally owned, by the way. The Loblaw co. is just their supplier.

I'm all for supporting local farmers markets, but all too often I find their prices significantly higher for the same produce (purportedly from the same sources) than in my local supermarkets (not Loblaws). If they were the same prices, cool. But when they're 10-20% more expensive? I find it hard to support that.
You gotta go to the source. If someone brings it to you you're gonna get charged. It makes sense the company that owns a fleet of trucks saves a little but there.
If you went to the sticks where the veggies grow (I grew up in Essex county if you're close) you'll drive by little stands on the sie of the road sometimes they aren't even manned there's just a pile of veggies and box for he meager money they ask. That's where you see real savings. Good luck.

I cannot believe what I am now reading. Have they lost their minds? Had to do a double take for a second. Farmers markets and grocery stores are two different marketplace niches. 😮
Businesses will do whatever it take to compete and say whatever it takes to compete. But "skip the line"? Excuse me but grocery store lineups at the checkout are brutal because they're too cheap to pay enough people to do that job. But then they want us to use self-checkout. But after you're done doing that, they have an employee checking your receipt as if to make sure you're doing their job properly.
If you can just shop anywhere else other than Loblaws. Shutting down one corporate chain may be enough for them to get the message, stop gouging us.
The spirit of the money campaign
Interesting how many comments at how more expensive are products at farmers market. My experience in Quebec City Montreal Trois Rivières Boucherville. Does not support what is observed. There are however markets with resellers and prices are equivalent or higher than supermarkets.
I skip loblaws as much as possible. We live down the road from a butcher, and multiple fruit and veg stands. Im lucky to live rurally so getting stuff at a farmer's actual stand is pretty great. They'll have a market every Saturday morning at a local distillery. Kind of cool. We even have a bee keeper who does local honey. When i was a kid someone did maple syrup but not any more. We just got a cafe that makes fresh baked goods everyday, baked in house, you can watch. I havent been since i have to have gluten free but i hear good things.
Skip Loblaws, go local as much as you can instead. Support the farmer and save money.

I have nothing to do with the Evil Empire. Worked there for 10 yrs and cant pay me enough to shop there. Absolutely horrible company and heard there firing all there warehouse stuff in the near future. Going fully automated, way to go. I will never shop at any of there stores
One hears those kind of stories, and yet, it has probably the most stable employees of any company I deal with. Until COVID, and some employee at a nearby store died of it, we saw the same faces for 20 years, and they knew our kids. Therefore they were older, and scared by COVID. But the faces are stable again, same people year after year.

Farmers Markets are way overpriced.
They're usually appropriately priced so that the farmer can actually pay their employees. Larger stores like no frills or Walmart are so cheap because they've basically monopolized the market will refuse to pay basically anything to farmers for food. Many farmers end up having to sell to them at a loss and take out loans to make up the difference.
And it's been so normalized the average Joe now sees a normal price as unacceptable and too expensive

Canadians complain about Loblaw Companies Limited and then continue to shop there. The only way they will learn their lesson is if people stop shopping there. (No Frills and The Superstore are also part of LCL).

Loblaws has truly become one of the worst Canadian companies now, in terms of not caring about anything whatsoever, other than their PROFIT!!
I've been watching their pricing "games" very closely over the past couple of years. They are quietly pushing prices higher and higher; very often LONG before any of their competitors raise theirs. This is not a good look for them.
They will then claim a product has only gone up say, 3%, but now they never put the item on sale, therefore the increase is actually more like 8-12%.
This is what happens when there's so much pressure at Loblaws to "perform" It ends up bringing out the worst in people.

Sobeys in Quebec tends to shortcut growers. For instance sourcing garlic from a single grower in St Anicet to save money. As per CBC news last year. And dumping 100 smaller suppliers
What? It makes perfect sense. Shiploads of garlic come in from Chigh Nuh for almost nothing. In stores, shoppers grab it up because Canadian garlic costs 5x more. Think, for god's sake. Just _think._
I shop there and will not anymore.
