I think he could be a distant relative of an ancient hero considering how powerful he really is. I mean think about it, the guy lifted a giant stone pillar about 4 times his size, and probably 4 times his weight too, like it was a pool noodle, he swings a giant mallet around like it’s nothing, and he’s also shown to have some level of magic or ability to control some elements like fire, ice, and lightning(in forgotten land and pinball to be specific). It’d make sense if one of his relatives was an adept magic user and also had terrifying physical strength as well, and it got passed down to dedede. Either that or dedede is the avatar or something

My main reason for this is that in the Light Novels, when the ancients are mentioned.. King Dedede states he never met the ancients “personally” but he has heard many stories of them. ( Likely from Meta Knight because Meta knight actually studies the ancients ) It is possible that the ancients were instead aware of King Dedede’s existence like they were perhaps aware of claycia’s existence? Putting these inspirational individuals into their work. Heck, just like how Kirby is well known throughout the universe? In another Light Novel, King Dedede is also talked about in other worlds.. seen as an authority figure! ( Another thing that should be noted is that it’s hard to say wether or not King Dedede is truly a genetically modified animal since creatures like Fecto Elfilis already existed with traits people like us would deem abnormal. Let’s not forget any of the other animals either! The Animal friends, Pon & Con, etc. )

Not that if affects your theory, but in Japanese Dark Nebula is described as "ruler of darkness" instead of "ruler of the underworld", and "underworld" is probably an unintentional change since darkness is _ankoku_ while underworld can be a longer _ankokugai._

A thing not mentioned here: Dedede managed to stole Kirby's warpstar to power up the HR-D3, so thats another big thing that he did.

Maybe at one point it was, but the JP only dedede directory it also says ruler of the underworld.
