- Most new divers have trouble deploying an SMB (Surface Marker Buoy) and reel at depth. Alec found a neat new SMB kit that simplifies the release procedure for everyone.

Glad to see some new videos. Thanks for the video.
You bet. Holidays over, lots more to come.

every diver should carry this
Best surface safety device next to an electronic signaller.
A
It’s a must here in Queensland Australia
who else thought there is little 230bar cartridge in that pouch? I miss your vintage scuba videos Alec
Kevin tells me one is coming next week. Another next month. We only shoot Vintage Scuba 2 or 3 times a year as Kevin has to come to my ranch where all the old / cool stuff is kept.
A
Was debating buying this - this video answered all my questions and made my decision for me!
Glad this was helpful in making a decision. Thanks for watching.

I own this DSMB, I love it. It is so easy to use. It's worth the extra couple of bucks to have the built in reel. I had to add a bolt snap to make it easier to use. Highly recommend though
Thanks for sharing and for watching.
A
Alec is so awesome! Thanks for the continued content!!!
My pleasure!
A
Happy new year to you and your team it’s always a pleasure getting great advice from you.
Happy new year and more diving for everyone.
A
Thank you for your videos and tips. Interesting enough, in late ‘80s I was the first one among my diving friends to carry a quick launch marker buoy. It was a bit different in model and features but basically the same thing. It came in a pouch that could be tightened with two strips to one leg, as a knife. My friend used to make fun of me, as they believed that I liked too much gadgets - which was and still is true. Now SMBs are basically standard issues for any diver.
Thanks for sharing and I have been through that too. First single hoses, then SPG, then BCD's.... All these new fangled toys from my youth are standard gear for everyone. Appreciate hearing your story.
A
Love the videos!!
Thank you, more coming.
A
Simple and smart solution
I thinks so too. Thanks for watching.
A
You sold me, I ordered one for my gear bag.
I think you will like it. Put your name on it or it may be 'borrowed' by your dive buddy.
A
This is the one I have. It is excellent.
I think so too. Tangled lots of reels in my youth.
A
Happy new year, my friend and every one.
Happy new year! Lots more of me so it will be a good year!

I deployed one on Electric Beach, Oahu just to mark my position. It even said "diver below" on it. Unless I am in protected space with zero possibility for boats, I flag myself for safety. I was solo, too, so just making my presence known. However, the lifegurads at the beach freaked out and came out on their wave runner thinking they needed to save me or something. Very embarrassing. I wish they had known better, and I still beat myself up for being "weird" about marking.
Not at all. As a diver you did the right thing in a area of possible surface dangers. Lifeguards need training on diver issues. What would they do if you stayed down for a 10 minute safety stop? Pull you up? Be safe and share your stories with others my friend.
A
Great idea with the pucket & different types of inflation.
Thanks 👍.
A
You sold me!
They are a neat idea. More coming.
A
Hey alec can you do a storytime video and tell us some of your diving stories? That'd be pretty interesting
Thought about it but my stories would shock many of today divers. What I did, and many divers back in the stone age did, seem crazy now but were normal then. I'll try to add some safer stories when I can. Thanks for watching.
A
@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter I don't care if they get shocked. Let us know if you decide to do it. It'll be a great time
Pocket is definitely cool. Although I remember my SMB had a cover in which reel and SMB itself were fitting perfectly making it very handy to use
Thanks for the info! Hard to believe they can still make useful improvements after all these decades.
A
Alec, this bcd is so cool, I really regret already, because I bought one several months ago. 😞
Oh no! But you can never really have enough scuba gear, right?
A
Nice idea with the pouch for the reel. I Just keep mine rigged and ready to go in a utility pocket on my belt. Also I use a swivel bolt snap to keep the line from twisting and tangling when i'm reeling up the line. I never understood why you needed to keep them seperate and rig it underwater. That's too much work especially with thick gloves.
I see where thick gloves may be a problem but not for experienced cold divers and those who regularly practice DSMB u/w deployments. Good to know your setup works for you.
A
I’m certified through Patty diving, but I probably need to update since I haven’t been diving in a very long time ….several years. and my single air tank is filled with air and I don’t know if it’s stale We’re still good after several years should I change it out for a new tank?
I covered that in my Scuba Myths S11E19. "Tank air goes bad". It needs an annual VIS so the tank will be checked and new air filled.
A
When you said Kevin, I thought you were talking to me on RUclips looking at your videos
Sorry no, Kevin is the other half of our team. Not the pretty half but the smart half who makes these videos for RUclips.
A
Pre-assembled is good. But the pocket location does not seem the best for a streamlined diver.
Maybe no but going by the hundreds of videos about crazy coral walking divers, this is not the biggest problem most have.
A
You never showed but I'm assuming the line is already attached to the smb?
That is true. Demonstrating it u/w would be best but pools are not easy to come by on my schedule.
A
And do you retrain or train diving? And are you ever in Chicago Illinois?
I don't train divers anymore, retired after 50 years in the dive industry. Check the PADI website for local trainers near you.
A
Looks great, except I'm dubious of open-ended DSMBs as they can collapse on the surface, or does the presence of the over-inflation valve mean that it does actually seal somehow? I'd also check how much line is on that real and ditch enough to make the holes properly usable and prevent line spilling over as you wind it back in. As is it looks rather over filled.
Yes, they have a one-way valve in the bottom. The purge valve is there so you can remove air from it at all and so it doesn't rupture on the way up. Spools are always overfilled. That's actually a good thing though. You just cut off a few meters and you have enough line to tie bolt snaps for all your equipment like lamps or the long hose.
@@twoknife Yes indeed, but I'm certainly not short of spare lengths of line!
Gas expansion in lower pressure. Even a partial fill at 20 feet will inflate this bad boy to purge during its journey to one atmosphere
The open end is not a problem for this model Tim. It has a self closing bottom and if deployed from depth fills up hard.
A
@@AlecPeirceScuba_SeaHunter TY, I guessed so as it had an over-pressure dump.
Great product. Thanks Alec! Overpriced in my opinion.
As a critical safety device on the surface, I'd spend a few buck extra. Shop around for a deal or ask your LDS to package in with a new reg/bcd purchase.
A
I like the reel in the pocket, but I can see someone inflating the dSMB and forgetting to take out the reel, and off it goes...
That's when you hope your buddy does not have a camera pointed at you.
A
how much is it cdn
exactly what i've been looking for
On place Google showed me was $105, at www.divingsports.com
A
Any experience with Seaskin drysuits?
Not myself as I focuses in my store on the top brands with the best service.
A
Has Alec lost any friends in a diving incident?
Not while diving with me I'm glad to say.
