Nice choice of sand Sam! As others have said, keep running the water in the bucket Sam. And I find it helpful to use a plastic mesh style kitchen strainer to tumble sand over in,while in the water, to free the dust and dirt which then falls from the strainer. Once clear, I place the cleaned lot from the strainer in a second bucket. This will only work if the particles are bigger than the holes in the plastic mesh strainer.
That’s cool Sam. Rinsing in tap water is making me little worried but should be ok I recon because you didn’t start your cycle yet. CaribSea sand is good choice. Now I’m waiting for your scape video and cycling video. I hope you got the rocks already 🤥.
I only rince my rice four times, I guess cooking is less trouble than reefing :) congrats on the build, I really enjoy following the process through your videos.
I started with sand, pain to clean the glass at the bottom, traps detritus, blows all over the place. It does look nice though, But once coralline covers the bottom it looks ok too. I think in big tanks sand is good, maybe nanos like mine bare bottom is a bit easier.
Interesting Method, I guess I was lazy. I just shoved the hose into the opening in my bag then run the hose until it was clear, while agitating the bag.
Glad it was you doing the rinsing and not me LOL. Im also glad you went with sand Sam, bare bottom just doesn't look like a real reef to my eye. I think you need one more bag and I'm keen to see how you avoid those bare spots with the mp-40's placed where they are.
Serenity sans is the cleanest I have used the first rinse I did on mine looked like the tenth rinse you did, highly recommend it. Another thing I found easier was to keep rinsing until the water comes clearer then do rinse and tips. Saves a lot of time maybe try it on your last bag if you end up getting it. Love the build!
Keep it up man, sadly my tank crashed 1 month ago and giving it couple months before trying again. Watching your videos make me slowly more keen to back into it
Interesting that you heard about the CaribSea aragonite - here in Brooklyn, NY I heard the same thing about black sand. I guess it's the same rumor that changes slightly depends on where you heard it.
A bit late to ask now,but is there a reason you can’t put it in the tank first and partly fill it with fresh water and then drain off all the muck? Could keep a wave maker in to keep it all in the water column?
I love sand but I thought putting the rocks in first was the way to go as it stops the little sand sifting goby causing rock slides but love your videos and I look forward to every one best wishes from the UK .
Hey, can you tell us the particle size of your sand? Looks like something around 1mm wich is pretty much what I prefer. I think its important so be able to siphon the sand without sucking it all out.
Did you consider the life sand from CaribSea? If you did, why didn’t you choose it? I’m doing a new build now and wenr with that. Particle size between 1 and 3 mm, so doesn’t blow away and still good for the sand sifters...
I’m surprised I actually watched a video on sand without forwarding 😀. What are your thoughts on the Serenity aragonite sand, if you considered when choosing for your tank? I have it in my tank, I like it but has a few specks of pink which I guess some people might not be a fan of...
Hahahaha highly dedicated viewer! Yeah I know the serenity sand, it's not a bad option at all. I couldn't say anything positive or negative about it as I've never used it and literally wen't blindly off what my local fish shop said to use for the new tank :P From what I've seen in the bag of the serenity, it looks great though!
I dont understand why people wash gravel in a bucket. When i wash gravel i make a screen about 50cm by 50cm with fly screen. I but it on saw horses then but gravel on the screen. But thats how i have been doing it when i buy gravel. I believe all the dust gets washed away were in the bucket it still remains. Just an idea. Looks good keep the vids coming👍👍
Maaaate.... Why are you doing this the hard way? It's painful to watch. 😄 Next time just fill the bucket and keep filling - letting the dusty milky water flow over the top
Quick and easy tip for rinsing sand.
Drill and paint mixer in bucket. It'll clean it super fast and way better
Good thinking!

Yes is a great idea, that’s what I love about RUclips - we can all learn something new each day :)
@@ParkersReef It's normally you teaching me something, so I'm glad I can pay a little bit back!
Appreciate it 🙏🏻
Can’t believe I sat here and watched your video on sand!!! What’s wrong with me lol 😝 Love the updates
Hahahahahha gotcha 😅
Great video once again mate, thanks for sharing
Cheers!

Yeah it’s not live sand and therefore honestly won’t matter :)
Cycle is started, video next week :D

Haha thanks mate :)
I wish I could afford a tank like that. So beautiful!
Thank you, was a long time saving!!

I’ve got six tanks here and I only like the ones with sand in them :p
Interesting Method, I guess I was lazy. I just shoved the hose into the opening in my bag then run the hose until it was clear, while agitating the bag.
that works too!

Mp60s :p
But yeah, there is probably enough there once you spread it out - but another bag won’t hurt :)
Great video! Did you end up good with the 3.bags at 120 pounds or did you need more sand?
You should put the magnet in a bag, easier to get anything off the magnet then...
Yeah there was no magnetic parts though thankfully
Found your channel a while back. Great videos really enjoy your journey. Stay safe!
Thanks mate, appreciate it!
Same sand I used just recently. Great stuff and solid choice!
Glad to hear you still like it! Good choice :)

Ah sorry to hear!
Yeah learnt to always qt fish, once I removed fish cause of white spot I had massive crash and Dino took over whole tank, was a sad day
Fair play to you you have replied to every comment, keep up with the content, looking forward to seeing what comes next with this tank :)
It’s my promise :)
You guys take the time to watch and comment, least I can do is reply!!
I’ve actually used fish nets that is fine enough to put sand and put water through it. Seems to work well for me.
Ah that’s good thinking!
@@ParkersReef thank you! I enjoy your videos. Makes a man dream of the possibilities for the future.
Yassss!! Things are picking up Great Mate. Looking forward to the scape and cycling.
All the Love from Sydney 🤩
Cheers mate!
Pour the sand down a pipe helps it not mix so much to.
Yeah I’d just pretty fiddly to do on your own :)
When you rinse out the live sand aren’t you also washing out the beneficial bacteria that makes the live sand live?
if the sand you use has bacteria then yes
This wasn’t live stand to start with :)
@@ParkersReef oh ok well that makes sense lol
If you need more sand maybe go a bag of live sand it will fill in and help sand bed out
Yeah considered it, quite like this sand and it is easy to add bacteria’s myself :)
Loving this build mate! Great job with the series, really useful and very well presented videos
Thanks so much!
Personally, i would add anothe bag now instead of later. Build looks great!
Yeah will need to get my hands on some more :)
I know it’s too late for this advice but it’s easier to remove the nozzle and just run the hose in there as it overflows until it runs clear.
Yeah he a couple suggest that, good tip!
Great You Tuber 👏👏🇬🇧
Thank you 🙌🏻
HAHA! Good job! Can't wait to see the aquascaping work.
You and me both!! Not long now :)
watching your videos has gotten me back into the reefing, $$$$$$$$$$$$, next time u can pour the sand into a tube the reaches the bottom less mess
Yeah but also fiddly as hell :p
Nothing else in the tank so was happy to cloud it up :)
Can't wait for fish n coral
yeah hopefully get the first of the fish in there in time for Christmas :) Can't rush these things!
Metals stay at the bottom. Shouldve ran the magnet at the bottom with water in the bucket
Yeah I did dig deep into the bucket, plus after rinsing the sand that thoroughly, you’d expect to find a little something on the magnet - but nothing
I agree with you on sand or bare bottom. I'd probably add more sand though! I love the videos... keep them coming!
yeah think it may need another half bag - but will see how we go!
Interesting that you heard about the CaribSea aragonite - here in Brooklyn, NY I heard the same thing about black sand. I guess it's the same rumor that changes slightly depends on where you heard it.
The black sand is magnetic, that I can confirm!
@@ParkersReef ahhhhh
@@ReefingwithO SeaChem Grey Coast, not quite black but dark grey is non-magnetic.
That was a lot of rinsing lol. It's coming together nicely.Keep up the good work.
Could have done with more!!!
A bit late to ask now,but is there a reason you can’t put it in the tank first and partly fill it with fresh water and then drain off all the muck? Could keep a wave maker in to keep it all in the water column?
Absolutely could! I had already filled the tank with salt water and didn’t want to waste it was all :)
thanks for the update! can't wait for you to get to 10k :)
I reckon this week we are on track!
@@ParkersReef that’s super exciting.
I love sand but I thought putting the rocks in first was the way to go as it stops the little sand sifting goby causing rock slides but love your videos and I look forward to every one best wishes from the UK .
I like to have the sand to sit the rocks in personally, but either approach is totally fine. I just don’t have the rock scape ready yet!
Hey, can you tell us the particle size of your sand? Looks like something around 1mm wich is pretty much what I prefer. I think its important so be able to siphon the sand without sucking it all out.
I believe it is 1-3mm :)
i’ve had to rinse out sand/gravel many times over the years and have to say it’s one of the more tedious tasks 😅
Thankfully don’t have to do it too often!
💯
Thank you :)

No life in it by the time it hits australia :)
Easy enough to add bacteria’s myself 👍🏻
Love that sand
Yeah hopefully does the trick!
@@ParkersReef now all I need is a fella to keep it more clean because I suck at it hahhahaha ...down to Dave’s

No

😂😂first time i heard you say I skimped out,and for sand 😂
Hahahahah budget is getting low!
Hey Parker, would you happen to have any stickers?
Sorry man I don’t, perhaps something I’ll get into soon :)
Hi is it okay not to soaking sand in RODI water?
Does it not cause u any harmful effect later?
No it’s fine. Ideally RODI would be better, but they tiny amount of tap water (which is quite good where I live, very low TDS) will have no inpact

clever thinking, I like it!
@@ParkersReef thanks just sharing idea's
All for it mate, thank you :)
Well worth the 400 rinses. Sand, you can’t beat it.
Agreed!!
Doesnt rinsing it out get rid of the alive part😂
Only if it was live sand to begin with :)
You could rinse in RO if you have a water tanker full of it lol 😂 not practical.
Caribsea special grade is the best 👍
Yeah you absolutely could, just a lot of effort for little reason in my book. Tsp water at this point is no issue :)
Wow it's been a while since I've had to use new sand, forgot the effort it takes to clean it 😂
It’s a journey!!!!
That is a lot of sand
Potentially not enough!!
Can we get a 10k subs QA video?
sounds like a great idea! Live?
sandy water down a drain is just a no. just dump it out in the the lawn.
Yeah fair call
8am upload on a Sat. i think someone has a young kid. lol
Hahaha scheduled ahead of time, but yes, 6 year old in the house!
MORE SAND> I hate bare spots in mine by not adding enough
oh yep, I won't have bare spot!!! Just have to see if I can get it to settle over the entire base once rock work goes in :)
