MORE mall trivia . . . when Segerstrom built South Coast Plaza in the 1960s, the original phase of the mall was anchored by Sears and May Company (now Bloomingdale's). As the mall grew, Bullock's, and Nordstrom stores were constructed in various wings. However, May Company's lease contained a clause that prevented The Broadway and Robinson's (direct competitors) from being tenants in the same mall. In 1986, Segerstrom completed Crystal Court (not called South Coast Plaza at this point) across Baer Street and, at the time, was not connected to South Coast Plaza and was considered a separate mall, thus allowing The Broadway and Robinson's to be anchor tenants. Once The Broadway, Robinson's. Bullock's, and May Company became part of Macy's , the May Company non-compete clause became null and void, allowing the construction of the elevated walkway, thus joining the two malls under a single name.
Correct! I worked at May Company in the late 80’s. At that time Crystal Court was pretty new. The original Robinson’s building was later renovated and the space was converted into the Crate & Barrel and West Elm stores. Those escalators seen in this video were actually part of the interior of Robinson’s. It was an enormous high end store. Even had a cafe on the upper level.
I grew up with the Segerstrom family. South Coast Plaza, Crystal Court, and Segerstrom Hall were all my haunts growing up. My dad was captain of Santa Ana PD. Thank you for these videos. New subscriber.❤
This has been my favorite mall for 50 years ! South coast plaza / crystal court is the most productive mall in the United states. And has the best holiday celebrations.
@@socaljarhead7670that’s true, but it is also near some of the wealthiest neighborhoods in the US. So they get a lot of high end shoppers that are residence.
I remember that mall from when I was growing up in orange county, use to have the best Christmas decorations always a tree ceremony with the biggest tree around they went all out. When my kids where young we drove from the high desert to show them but they have down size there Christmas. Haven't been back have no need to thanks for the memory I grew up down there and even in Costa Mesa until the mid 60s then move to the San Bernardino mountain until the 70s now in the high desert
I lived in the Village Creek caddy corner from South Coast Plaza back in 78-81. Of course Crystal Court came in much later. My brother and I used to hang out at the arcade on the first floor, right at the entrance to the Sears. Crystal Court is absolutely for the richest of the rich.
Make sure you go to the other side of South Coast Plaza next time! It is even more glamorous and high end over there. This side is considered the "home and interior" part of the plaza which is why it is usually less busy.

Little did I know inside of her beautiful exterior Satan's daughter was residing... 👹 Just like all the other Malls you visit, this place was hopping back then! I guess they dont want riff raff shopping there....lol. I got ya, they do need standard mall staples there for all types of shoppers. I guess Sears WAS the non fancy store
It’s been a few years since I’ve been to that mall. It was during the holidays and was busy. I’m glad that it’s still doing well. Another mall that I used to go to a lot was the Brea Mall. That was upper scale like South Coast. I haven’t been there in some time I hope it’s still doing well.
Wallichs Music City used to be across Bristol from SCPlaza... Also, Montgomery Wards was on Bristol, across the 405 from SCPlaza. Mid to late 1970's... the good ole days.
I used to work at the vans store here. So glad to not be working during the holidays there anymore, the employees would have to park several streets away and take a shuttle bus to your store, it would get that busy
Hey Jay Man, I went into the main SCP Mall today, entered at the entrance between Sax and Macy's and walked the upper level over to the old Sears then the lower level back to where I came in. WOW! I'll let you explore/expose it in another video, but the old Sears building is still there and it has a Forever 21 clothing store on its lower level (I thought Forever 21 went completely out of business). A while back the old Sears Auto Shop building was being used as an art gallery and studio but its long gone and the building is vacant. Surprising to me is just south of the auto repair bldg, west of the old Sears store, and east of Nordstroms is a small building that has a Friar Tux's Tuxedo rental store; shocking since that tux store has been there since the 1970s!!!! and its in the middle of empty buildings, so how does it survive! Nice exploratory for me but I can't afford to buy Christmas gifts there, especially down at the end of the mall near Sax and Macy's. Enjoy a walk-thru when you get the opportunity. Cheers!
Yeah I'll hit it up to see for myself. I remember that tux place back when Sears was open and the art gallery seems like a weird location. I remember that Sears down sized for that forever 21 like Orange Sears did for 24 hour fitness
I used to work at the Macys' there. It's really a nice mall. I can't believe how empty the place is. In the late '90's into the early 2000's it was wall to wall shoppers from open to close.
@@HEYMANWITHJAYMAN Yeah, it is surprisingly clean. From what I understand, it's getting to be pretty ghetto these days. Costa Mesa is getting enveloped by Santa Ana driving most people to Fashion Island and the Irvine Spectrum. Back in the day though it was the place to go.
Interesting video as I used to live close to that area in my younger days. I was wondering if that section of the South Coast Plaza complex had closed down since its isolated from the main South Coast Plaza Mall across the street but it looks like its thriving. Lots of the storefronts have changed, but at least its just change to new occupants and not vacancies. Now I'm wondering what the "Sears side" of the main S.C. Plaza Mall looks like. I've got to go over there tomorrow so I might stop in for a quick walk through the main mall across the street and see how that's doing before the Christmas season kicks off (after Halloween?). That slurry sealing and re-stripe of the parking lot is a good sign as the mall is probably still busy so the staff is keeping up the maintenance. Cheers.
I didn't hit up the main mall yet but drove by the old Sears and it's still un occupied. Definitely South Coast Plaza keeps thing up. I'll go soon to video it
I’ve shopped at SCP a few times, and I don’t really get the 80s vibe that much at Crystal Court. Now, head down to the South Bay Galleria - that felt like a time warp.

Why are we seeing Omega symbols in malls lately? It’s kind of creepy. I hate it when you have to park in a parking garage for a mall. I didn’t know Costa Mesa was far enough south to have royal palm trees. This mall screams “don’t even come in here unless you’re wealthy”. My guess is at least 80% of Americans can’t afford to shop at this mall.
I went there back in February of this year, to pick up some CFP Frac at the money exchange shop right as you enter a small little door for it on the right and I was surprise how busy it was, too 😂!
