Thanks a lot for this playthrough! I heard about this series years ago and always ment to play them but didn't found the time - thanks to you I can start checking it off from my "to play" list ;-)
my neice and I played all the Broken Sword games and had a lot of fun working them out.funny watching Jason struggle with the goat and the toilet brush.
this series is one of my all time favorites... I really hope there’s a 6th one in the works. the 5th was an amazing return to form with the way they went back to this same art style. I love it so much... this, & Monkey Island have the absolute best stories. if only they weren’t so cryptic about that damned Andre Lobineau 😏😂
I’ve watched this through multiple times. While I do see where some of the criticism comes from with the Director’s Cut (removing/dumbing down some of the animations, taking out the joke of the Countess & Lopez being in the middle of the chess game, etc.), I actually enjoy the parts with Nico and the character portraits when they speak. Also, I very much enjoyed the cypher letter puzzles with Nico! I played them myself before watching the long play and had a lot of fun with it. I’ve actually found puzzles online to solve with the same type of cypher and I love them!
Also, as I watch the ending cutscene, George says, “What about Marquet? What about Peagram and Klausner? ... Three men dead and you don’t give a damn!” This omits the impetus of the whole game, the murder of Plantard. Also, what about Pierre Carchon, Imelda Carchon, Yamada, and Arno? Actually, now that I have written this out, I realize that, although they were all Neo-Templars, they were all killed by Khan-so that must be why he doesn’t mention them.
Okay, I just finished watching this and while there are some additions for the games I can accept, the other changes I just cannot. Like the ending, the new one is great but I wished they kept this line: George: "You know....you'll never be able to write your story now." Nico: "I don't care....I've got what I want." George: "Huh?" Nico: "Just tell me one thing, George. Is our life gonna be this crazy?" I can't believe they removed that. It gives me a warm feeling of both George and Nico in love. Which is saddening that the sequels are more on and off with their relationship. Also, what about the quote at the end of the credits. "Those who endeavored to wield the sword were buried along with the Templar's secret. But fate had marked George and Nico. Soon, in an uncharted jungle on the other side of the world, they would be called to face an even greater threat. To be continued." Was that at the end of the credits in this version? Anyway, sorry for complaining but great job for putting your time and effort to playing this game and uploading it on RUclips.
Honestly, It's nice to have a list of some of the changes they made. I had no idea there were so many. Maybe I'll put in a playthough of the orginal version at some point.
Fact is, there were no credits in this version. I just finished it tonight. The cutscene cuts exactly like here, then back to title screen, without transition, nor lady Piermont's lovely piano solo.
My sister met Charles Cecil (the director) at some convention or whatever some years ago. I grew up watching her play this game a lot some 20 years ago and eventually I gave it a go as well. I tried BS2 as well but I didn't like it as much as the original.
Really awesome! I think Broken Sword 2 has special place for me, my brother installed it for me on PC back in Windows 98 days, it was something special about that point and click game. But i like the first one aswell!
You know, I just played Smoking Mirror again, out of nostalgia. And I enjoyed that the game doesn't make things easy for you, you have to figure stuff on your own, including where the objects you can interact with are, etc. I played this new director's cut and immediately saw one of the differences is a simplification or dumbing down the game - the interactive parts are always marked, you have hints in the game menu, etc. IDK why this has become so prevalent in modern games - that they always try to make it as easy as possible for the players. Half the charm of the original games is figuring them out and sometimes really scratching your head.
I'm sure it did and does have it's fans, having to hunt for intractable items has always been pretty unpopular. I remember complaints about it as far back as "Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade Graphic Adventure". For example, the Simon the Sorcerer games got skewered by reviews for too much "pixel hunting" - even though there's an option in the game to highlight intractable items with a F10. While I don't disagree that modern point'n'clicks are too easy, highlighting intractables shouldn't impact the enjoyment of a puzzle that is well crafted.
I just began playing the derictors cut version. And what i noticed, is, that the amount of items, with which you could interact became smaller. For example you can interact with lamp post or umbrella in original game, but you can't in directors cut. That is sad.
I'm currently playing this and the cutscenes at 1:38.50 also cuts for me like this does, I assumed that it was a glitch, but reading around it looks like the directors cut removed quite a bit and even made cuts to cutscenes. Guess if you really care then playing both versions is required for the full experience.
"Guess if you really care then playing both versions is required for the full experience." That's the only way such things should be experienced... And those who don't even care enough, should stay clear of such masterpieces and don't insult them with their crass attitude.
