Wireless Mic Systems Range Tests, Comparing Systems $30 to $600

- In this video I test the indoor and outdoor range performance of 8 different wireless microphone systems, varying in price from $30 to $600. I test the Fifine K037, Hotec Wireless system, Fotowelt Air / Sokani Tiny, Saramonic Blink 500, Rode Wireless Go, Rodelink Filmmaker Kit, Saramonic UwMic 9 and the Sennheiser Evolution G4.
The UHF Fotowelt Air system performed the worst, but a couple of the systems surprised me with their performance, both good and bad.

You’re an angel for making these videos. Thank you. I’ve been using the Sennheiser XSWD which runs on 2.4ghz and it’s not reliable enough outdoors IMO.
I working on a review of the XSWD right now. I am actually going to be doing the outdoor range testing soon, so it will be interesting to see how well it does.
bigtb1717 I do a lot of wedding ceremonies, so there are a lot of people around. Funny thing is it performs better when no one is around. I think the Bluetooth frequency of 2.4 is less reliable when lots of cell phones get around, etc. It would be great if you could test it in a public space as well like a busy shopping center or something to see if that proves true.
It's definitely possible that a busy RF environment with lots of wi-fi and bluetooth signals will result in greater chance of interference and dropped signal. Unfortunately it's not very practical for me to test it in a busy area right now.

My Rode wireless go breaks up sometimes and the transmitter and receiver are only a couple feet apart. Is there a way to re link them? When I first starting using the rode wireless go they did not do this. I think I accidentally changed something and not sure what it was. Thanks in advance
I imagine there is a pairing process, but if they work at all, they are paired. There shouldn't be anything else you can do to change the connectivity. Is it possible that something has changed and there is a new source of interference that wasn't there before? Is there some new obstruction that wasn't there before? Are you wearing the transmitter in a different location on your body now? Are you using a wired mic? If so, is it possible there is an issue with the mic or the connection?
I suppose it's also possible that the system has a problem.
I also suppose it couldn't hurt to try the pairing process. See below from the manual:

If pairing is required
Press and hold the button for 3 seconds
The signal strength icon on the screen will start flashing Single press the power button on the TX
The TX and RX should pair immediately

Hi! Was about to purchase a saramonic 500 then I stumbled on to your video. I’m looking for something that can record 3 people that is not so cumbersome for a kid. Planning to use it for snowboarding, bike riding and motorcycle riding. Right now using my phone, gopro and insta360 as a camera, not using a recorder right now
Are you looking for a portable audio recorder, or a wireless system for three separate people? What will you be recording the audio into? There are several two-person wireless systems, but you aren't likely to find a practical three person system. Are you able to sync audio in your video editor after recording it? You might do well with three separate, portable audio recorders, one for each person. Then you can sync it all up at the end. Just depends on how you want to go about this.
bigtb1717 that’s the recommendation I always get but it seems like it’s hard to sync 3 audio recordings. I’m still a beginner at video editing
Understood. Unfortunately there is no super simple way to mic up three people. You could use three separate wireless systems and have them all connected into a three channel recorder or a three channel mixer that would then send the mixed signal to a camera or recorder.
Thoughts on the Rodelink vs Rode Wireless go 2? For outdoor pranks
Rodelink has a bit better range and slightly fewer dropouts from obstructions. It also has better audio quality. The Wireless Go/2 is smaller and less expensive. It just depends on what your priorities and needs are.
I hope you are keeping the "pranks" safe and innocent.
@@bigtb1717 Thanks a lot, ended up cancelling my order for the Wireless go 2 and went for the Rodelink. My priorities are what you had mentioned above and also hope it has less audio dropouts compared to the wireless go 2 when you’re not directly in the line of sight. Pranks will be innocent and friendly too haha

Can the Fifine wireless mic be hooked up to an IPhone XR?
I was really impressed with its outdoor performance for $40 dollar system. I also really appreciated your video on range audio performance outdoors. I’m doing my own research on wireless mic’s because I’m about to start my own YT channel and would like to buy a system that won’t drop its signal. I was actually looking the Rode GO or the 2 but your review has changed my mind now. Any further advice would be appreciated? For what I’m gonna try and do will never go further than 50-100 feet. Thanks again your video has helped me!

Happy to help. The FiFine system I tested will not easily connect to a phone like the XR. You would need an adapter, and you may end up having trouble finding one that works. Some of the cheap brands make wireless systems with receivers designed to connect directly to iPhones, but I've never tried them.
If you are okay syncing audio in post, a compact, portable audio recorder may be a good option if you are worried about signal drops outdoors at distances of 50-100 feet. The Tascam DR-10L is a pretty handy little recorder. It's not super cheap, but I did recently see a holiday sale for around $130.

Thanks for getting back to me. I live in Canada. I’ll keep your recommendation in mind. What do you think of a 2nd iPhone on me with a lav mic recording in voice notes, then in post with luma fusion syncing the audio to the video from my XR? If I can pull that trick off, do you have a recommendation for a good lav mic I can plug into my iPhone?
I do have a budget of up $200 Canadian to invest. I just want to make sure the $ is well invested and recordings are drop free! I look forward to your thoughts and once again thanks for making this video, it really helped me

If your second phone has a combo 3.5mm jack that can accept a microphone input, there are many lav mic options. You just have to ensure you get one that is compatible with a phone and/or use the proper adapter. Rode makes the SmartLav+, which is designed to plug directly into a smartphone with a 3.5mm jack with no adapters. There are probably many cheaper options as well. Some of the cheaper options have a really tinny sound, so it's best to check reviews if it's not something with a known good quality.

I just listened to the end and I'm not sure what you are asking about. I don't know that I mentioned two being better. The Sennheiser G4 technically had the best range, but it's also the most expensive. The Rodelink system did the best out of the 2.4 Ghz systems, but it is also the most expensive 2.4 Ghz system here. If you have a time in the video I can tell you which system I was talking about.

The Rodelink system is currently $400 and the Sennheiser system is currently $599.
I wanted to purchase a wireless mic to record car exhaust audio and was wondering which of these would you recommend for that? Though I'm personally leaning on the cheaper side and am not trying to splurge on a Rode.
For something like that, maybe a portable audio recorder would work better. You can get a very decent audio recorder for around $100. At that point you could use the built-in microphone but you'd have the option of connecting a wired mic later if you wanted.

The Blink 500 is a bit cheaper and includes a lav mic. The Rode Wireless Go has a bit better sound quality, especially when using the built-in microphone on the transmitter. It is a bit smaller and the display is helpful and it also has significantly less latency. I would say that if you plan to use the built-in microphone the Rode Wireless Go is the way to go. But if you will use a lav anyway and want to save a few bucks, or if you want to get a two transmitter system that only has one receiver, the Blink 500 might be the better option, as long as you are okay with the other limitations (latency, no display, etc.).

If you search for "Hotec wireless mic" on Amazon you will find it. The price seems to have gone up a bit since I reviewed it, and the exact listing I used is gone as well.
