When the Weather Turns Bad Is The Acura RDX or CR-V Better In The Snow: I Drive Both To Find Out!

  • ( www.TFLcar.com ) While the older generations of the Honda CR-V and Acura RDX were based on the same architecture, that's no longer the case with these 2020 models. Despite the different engines and platforms, both are all-wheel drive - but is the Honda CR-V just as much fun as its luxury cousin on the snow? Nathan checks out both cars' AWD systems in Winter Park, Colorado.

The SH-AWD torque vectoring sys started with the 1997 Prelude type SH, which I still drive but isn't AWD. It's more like SH-FWD LOL... 20+ yrs of hard daily driving and everything still works fine with literally no major repairs needed. I also have the newer CRV AWD, which works great too.

@@futbol1972 I bought an RDX Advance with SH-AWD in November. We have found the gas mileage to be poor, but not sure if this is due to the engine still being broken in (we only have 3000 miles on it so far). I guess I've just become an old fuddy duddy, but when I'm driving in the snow I'm not interested in having "fun", I am interested in getting where I'm going in one piece. Not getting stuck in a drift and freezing to death is also high on the list. Where I live, if you get stuck, you can call whomever you want. You will be told that they will be out after the road is plowed, whether that's later that day or a week later. Until then you are on your own.

@@alansach8437 SHAWD isn't about fast and furious drifting. It can do slight drifts though, enough to be fun for a bit. But, it's designed for maximum traction all the time. That's it's strength. So this is perfect for you. RWD based cars and RWD biased AWD cars are more "fun" amd drift all day long.

My wife's 2012 and my 2016 AWD CR-Vs both have the same system and they do the job. I can take it through heavy snow and mud by simple turning off VSA and giving it a lot of gas. Honda says that it will go into AWD as soon as you get on the gas -- it is not only a slip - grip system like the old 3rd gen, but it is proactive. I've felt both the front and rear pushing and pulling as soon as I get on the gas, but it goes into FWD when going at a steady speed.
The 5th generation CR-V will also allow you to see the torque distribution on the graphic (Honda says it will send up to 60% torque to the rear wheels in certain circumstances). As far as the Acura, I cannot comment since I haven't driven one.

Got a 2019 RDX A-Spec shortly after release and have to say, best decision ever. Soooo much fun in the snow, especially with traction control off. But once you put it into Snow mode, becomes very difficult to get it to slip. I legit had to try hard to get it to do so, which is very nice for being safe. Only downside is the sound system isn’t as good as its competition (Rovers and BMW, etc) but still impressive (I have the 16-speaker ELS version). Likely cause the sub is in the very back, but it’s not enough to sway my decision for the rest of it. Most vehicles can’t compare to its “multi personality” Snow vs Sport+, as well as the Acura quality, which blows every luxury manufacturer out of the water (aside from Lexus, but they don’t have the features to compare to this, such as no Pano sunroof, etc)

Curious about your Honda AWD explanation. The 2019 model has a display where you can see power distribution. In fact, the system can send up to 60% to the rear wheels. If you look at the display, you will notice not always send power to the front wheels when you take of, the system behave similar to what it does the AWD on the "old" Escape, where it sends power to the rear wheels on circumstances where there's no front wheel slip, but you need more power at the back to have a better control.
So I don't think this 2020 is worst than before, and be only "2wd till front wheels spin".

As good as sh-awd is in bad weather, it performs even better on dry roads. It is an all weather/all season awd drive system if you like a sporty vehicle. You can really feel the rear end rotate around tight corners when the tq vectoring sends more power to rear outside wheel. The RDX and MDX drive like a much smaller vehicle with sh-awd system. The MDX sport hybrid and RLX sport hybrid has an improved sh-awd rear electric motor system a step above the sh-awd mechanical set-up. The sport hybrid Acura's can tq vector the outside rear wheel and use regen braking to slow the inside rear wheel to rotate tighter with or without engine power.

It is very telling when the narrator says that the snow was starting to intensify so it was time to stop filming! Well, gee! What do I do if I'm at the grocery store and the snow unexpectedly "intensifies" ? Spend the night in the parking lot? It doesn't really matter how sophisticated or not the AWD system is or is not, it does you no good when you are high centered. Then it's all about clearance. When small SUVs first became popular in the late nineties/early 2000s, they all seemed to have a fair amount. But as they have gradually become "crossovers " a lot of that has disappeared. This is a big advantage that Subaru has (8.7 inches) in their Forester and Outback. Maybe that's one reason they are so popular in snowy areas. Something for these other manufacturers to think about.

Driving in 6-8 inches of snow all the way in my FWD Mazda6, passing all those Foresters and Outbacks along the way. Just push it and go, no turns, no stopping, no slow down. The problem with all of this, once again, hard packed snow. You aren't really testing anything on hard packed snow. Slushy slimy stuff, ice, deep snow is when the shawd will shine. Plus, turning off TCS doesn't turn off stability control. There's a sequence you have to do with button presses and the hand brake/brake pedal in order to completely turn off the stability control on the Acura. I have a TLX. Only assuming the RDX is the same. I've driven one, but in the summer.I tried a CRV sport the other day against other SUV's, and even with TCS off, stability wouldn't let you play. By comparison my 19 BMW X3 with a similar 2 liter turbo easily returned 32-33 mpg on the same drive. That’s a 10 mpg difference between the RDX and X4. How is that possible Honda?
