  • This is a crazy original 1977 Chevette with just 800 miles on the car! Pristine red plaid interior. Very cool time capsule that still smells new!

That's awesome! A 1977 Chevette was my first car, in the early '90s, and I drove it for many years. It was surprisingly reliable, and when it did need something fixed, was simple to work on. It had gas mileage that rivaled many of today's cars. It's a shame that they don't have some cars like these anymore -- they would be great to teach the basics of auto mechanics. I love that the car even came with the do-it-yourself maintenance guide. My only complaint was that the automatic transmission needed another gear. The small 60hp engine actually had more power to give, but was hampered by the lack of another gear. PLEASE don't mod this car, it is a rare example of what a lot of people deemed a "throwaway car" but was actually decent.

I bought a brand new 1976 manual baby blue Chevette while in college. It was a great car for the times... affordable, plenty of room for two, and crazy good gas mileage. When my buddies were getting 17 MPG in their muscle cars, I was getting 40+. It was easy to work on, and parts were cheap. The hatch back was ahead of its time. I had to pay respects to Boston, Rush and Kansas, so I installed an 80- watt, 6-speaker sound system that cranked. I'm still amazed I have my hearing. Yeah, it was a dog 0-60, but it got me where I wanted to go. I did look for a bit more hp so I bought a header, dropped the CC and straight-piped it. Sounded pretty good if I remember correctly. Dis it if you may, but I think Chevrolet did a good job with this one.

We had two 1978 Chevettes, Dad bought new. Both were white. One had this classic red plaid interior and the other had brown plaid interior. It was the car I learned to drive on and later took to college. I recall telling all my friends in high school that I drove a Vette. I wasn't lying. I tried adding cool factor to it by adding a chrome exhaust extension and mudflaps. That did not help, but it was cooler than riding a bike. Haven't seen one on the road in decades. This video is a real piece of nostalgia for me.

And the hell of it all is he worked at general motors in Indiana. he came back to me a couple of months later and said you know you're right we do make a chevette I never knew

78 was my first car, almost identical to the one in the vid, but the color of mine was mint green with vinyl interior, bought it used with 70k miles for $600 in 1986. It was a small car built in the "big car" style. Thick metal fenders, solid axle heavy 5mph bumpers. I drove mine for 60-70k miles, the engine ran great up to the day I had to get rid of her in 1993. The floorboards rusted out, the windows were falling off track and the timing cover oil seal was leaking, but it got great mileage and never left me stranded.

  • @alueshen
    @alueshen Год назад +1

I still like telling people my first car was a 78 'Vette....That "joke" never get's old.
What's funny, for anyone who owned one, the air filter and the canister that holds it are all one part, it was sealed as a single piece (I doubt you could find them today). @5:41 You can see the air filter. In the mid 80's it was quite expensive to purchase the whole unit. IIRC it was $30-40, which was CRAZY expensive at the time, easily the equivalent of $100 today. Tired of paying that much for an air filter, I split the housing on mine into top and bottom using vice grips to slowly separate the stamped steel into two halves. I took the now split air filter housing into an auto parts store and patiently tried standard filters that fit inside the ring of the housing until I found one. A $4 filter from a chevy Camaro. It was a little taller, so the two haves didn't quite fit together, about 1/2" gap all around, but who cares, it was sooo much cheaper!
Another "funny" feature of the car is it came with the old style click-n-lift jack that was common on much larger cars at the time. It would hook into a slot under the ridiculously strong bumpers. Well on my 1978, the muffler, which you can see really well @12:18 actually blocked the mount point for the jack on the right side. Whatever genius owned the car before me put a hole in the vertical face of the bumper so they (let's be honest here, it was definitely a man) could stick the jack in the bumper face (the part you could see) rather than just hacksaw the pipe back and expose the slot for the jack.
When I take my 2019 accord for an oil change, and new air filter and shuck out over $100 (I use synthetic) I remember back to changing my oil in my Chevrette 4qts @less than $1 per quart and park plugs that cost, 75 cents. Plugs on my Honda are $40 each!
I could do a FULL tune up, plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, EGR valve, oil and transmission fluid for less than the cost of a single spark plug today!
    Good times!

Between that and people fixing them with flashers from '80-up models without the amber sections, that's how urban legends get started. Edit:timestamp 1:22

I had a new 78 Chevette, dark blue with a manual shift. I also said the "I have a Vette" thing....I always thought it strange that the steering column didn't face straight ahead, but instead angled noticeably to the right. After 3 years I had a Fred Flintstone hole under my feet and could see the pavement below as I drove. I used a cookie sheet pan to solve that problem. Had it until late 1983. No AC, but it didn't really bother me. Great memories--oh, to be in college again.

I'm glad I'm found this video of your Chevy chevette I had one as my first car in 1986 and I would love to find another one but unfortunately they are just so rare anymore I'm not exactly sure where I would find another one.. mine was in 1980 Chevy chevette 4 door four-speed manual transmission '96 horsepower ice Cold Air conditioning and probably get 35 miles a gallon on a tank fuel back in the day when it was only 89 cents a gallon drove me everywhere.. also the beauty of the Chevy chevette unlike cars today which is about the same size it was actually rear wheel drive which you don't see in a lot of compacts everything's front wheel drive and it's a pain to work on rear wheel drive is a good standard.. an excellent example video thanks for posting..!!

1977 was the year I got my license to drive, and I remember cars like this vividly. The muscle era I was ready to jump into went away and this was what greeted me. I opted for an air-cooled VW Super Beetle. It had some character and with chiseled out tailpipes it sounded relatively cool. But friends of mine had Chevettes, and they made it from point A to point B on minor amounts of gas. This gave me flashbacks...

GM built these T body cars all over the world for many years. They were good basic transportation and a very good price point. Being rear wheel drive they actually had somewhat sporty handling due to good weight balance. The models with the Isuzu diesel had no problems getting well over 50 mpg.

These cars were cheap to operate. I had two. Repairs and parts were cheap, and hardly cost anything. Also, in the 1970's and 1980's getting 35 MIles to the gallon was not easy. I always had 35 MPG combined city and highway gas mileage on mine.

So this car only lasted 786 miles? 😏 Sorry, I didn't watch until the end until my second time viewing it.

It's a great conversation starter to just own a Chevette these days. Let alone one with such low mileage.
