I always haul 4 tons (8000 lbs) of rock when I go to the quarry with my 1975 F-350 with the 12 foot bed. That old 390 doesn't struggle at all as long as it isn't too steep. 4000 lbs is nothing. I would not feel bad about hauling that in the bed of a 3/4 ton.
Actually, the bed will fit with spacers, but the issue is it needs to be stretched to 9 feet long. It can be done custom, but I would like Ram to step up and offer it from the factory with all factory options. There are many who use a pickup with 5-8K in the bed all the time.
+Scott W look up ram 5500 srw build, some guy in Alaska built a beautiful one with 36 inch tires and hauls with it. his is a grey Laramie modle. there's also an orange one floating around too.
I've driven one of these trucks exactly the same with a van box on the back. From Chicago to Indianapolis it bounced around a lot not a pleasant ride being completely empty. Also had the 4X4 with the hemi instead of the diesel only 6 mpg empty could not believe how bad it was.
Interesting how they didn't put more weight in to show the 5500's payload capability. 4000 lbs is well less than half what can be put into it (over 11,000 lbs). I'm surprised the base truck cost so much. Was it extras like dual HD alternators and other stuff that drove the price up?
Sand weighs about 2800 pounds per yard, and that dump bed probably holds between 3 and 4 yards, which is a little over the 4000 pounds you stated, I have a goose neck dump trailer about the same size and I have had almost 5 yards of sand in it.
I carry 4 ton gravel with my 2012 Chevy Silverado 3500HD V8 Gasoline 4x4 with a flat bed that I retrofitted to dump. I have had as much as 5 ton but I left that was too much for the truck's brakes. Testing the Ram with 2 ton (4000 lbs) is the same as testing a Ferrari and keep it below 60 mph.
ya we would fill that long bed diesel truck with coal and haul it on home once we borrowed a trailer and filled that up with coal too ... and as you could imagine you could feel that weight holding it down a bit
Dumbass what kind of internet troll are you commenting on such an old thread 7.3 l v8 turbo diesel could haul that shit no problem and the only problem it ever had was a goddamn tree falling on the cab during sandy ... get a life man
+Josh Kreiser lol I have a 5500 for landscape, it's a beast I put about 15 yrds of dirt and hauling a 8.5x 20 enclosed trailer with about 8k lbs inside with no effort
My poor 2014 ram 3500 once I hit 100,000 miles it has so many problems with the abs the traction control the cruse control, not to mention the 4 wheel drive went out thank god warranty covered it because of a recall. The air bag recall the front suspension track bar had to be re welded. Don't get me wrong I love my truck. But when things went bad they went bad fast and a lot happened at once.
+samus989 I own my own business, I worked the hell out of that truck, plus I had employees that could care less about my truck. I put 100,000 miles on it I'm 8 months. If you work anything it'll break, I just expect the next one o buy will have the same fate, at least it last longer than my 06 5.9 3500
Yeah I dont recommend 3500s for business use, a medium duty truck is cheaper and designed for the punishment. Mind you, where I work a 14,000 GVW is the smallest we work on. Most of them can be kicked around and not have any real issues till well over 100k.
+The Fast Lane Truck Car hauling, with a 4 car wedge. I bought it brand new and it was awesome! I love the truck, but I'm probably only pulling 35,000 pounds a maximum. Even at 35,000 that Cummings pulls like there's nothing there...... Oh and another problem I had, is the truck has 2 fuel filters, the one user the hood they tell you about and another under the bed. Once the truck starts losing power and start getting a diesel knock the dash say to bring the truck to the dealership to have the fuel system serviced. Seems like a way to force you to have it serviced. I changed the filter my self and it runs like a brand new truck. Trust me it's Essential fr those filters to be changed. Sorry for the rant
our cummins representative came out to do a reflash for all of our Isx series motors, he mentioned that Fiat Chrysler auto group didn't extend a contract agreement for cummins to supply engines for the ram line. not certain of the time line of how soon changes are going to happen, but a v-8 diesel from another engine producer had a test mule running around the proving grounds. somtimes they contract with us to move prototype cars and trucks in and out with our enclosed trailers. Our OTR driver caught a look at one while loading it said it was a V-8 and had the drop in oil cartridge filter housing with the raised lettering of viscosity oil to use. my guess european.... how soon if ever???????
+Parker Faulk Engines are "DETUNED" to make parts last longer when put to heavy duty use. same reason you would see a (example) F150 and a F250 superduty with the same (gas engine) but have different torque/hp ratings. The F150 will have a higher number and the superduty will have lower to not blow up internal parts as quickly
is that a fuel tank direct beside the exhaust pipe? they really expect that little heat shield to work? whenever i got a duramax ding the service regen or an RFQT the system gets extreamly hot for long periods of time. i cant see there being issues when driving only parked regens being a problem
Bought me an 84 dodge d350 with a dodge 360 engine in it. Had a peabody gallion dump on it and supposedly the engine has low compression. I rebuilt the hydraulics on it Truck was 3300.00 and rebuild on the dump was 2300 After some fluid changes I hit about 6 grand total. Who knows how many miles it has. But I loaded 5,000 on it just last Thursday. In town it's no problem. And truck could dump that even before the rebuild. But it leaked hydro oil. I've seen what these 2008 and up dodges go for so I understand what you mean. Even though mine is old it still gets the job done and eventually I will earn enough with it to replace it with a solid heavy duty 5500. Hopefully
Nice truck, but I still can't get into them tow mirrors. I grew up hauling trailers without them, and personally think you have less visability with them. Driving down the highway, they are ok if your trailer is 30' long or more, but for shorter trailers or backing around the barnyard in close quarters, they ain't worth a quart of cold piss.
+ih1206 witch is pretty much the tow mirrors folded in. works great on mine and like you said pulling farm trailers equipment trailers ect works better. I can see the possible need or helpfulness if your pulling a long 5th wheel. maybe
I carry 4,500 lbs of payload (plus my fat ass) with my 2000 Dodge 3500 every day. That doesn't even push my truck. 4k on this 5500 is nothing. Load it to max payload and make another video.
Thats nothing to a 5500HD my 4.8 gas GMC Sierra 1500 carry 3000lbs at least 3 times a week since 3 years ago and doesn't even push the engine capability (the leafsprings are upgraded), to a 5500HD Diesel should be around 15000-16000 lbs of payload to worth the price 😂😂😂
i am looking into getting one of these trucks to haul cars on the side and use as a DD how is the ride on one of these 5500's compared to a 2500 or 3500 cause the price different on a 5500 to 2500 or 3500 is very small
xxshadow529 I have a Dodge Ram 2015 max tow package 4x4. don’t make the same mistake that I did.Dont buy a 4x4 Dodge Ram.I paid extension warranty to 250.000 miles and Chrysler blame me for bad use.I did all my maintenance with them.Trust me if you are not a big company they don’t care about you.Thats happens with me
Ram 3500: 900 ftlbs x 3.73 rear end = 3300 Ram 5500 with 725 ftlbs x 4.88 = 3500, you get less speed, more power and the transmission and engine are unloaded.
+samus989 horsepower cannot be multiplied thru gear reduction. although you are correct on torque you would usually multiply it by the trans gear ratio as well..
Marc Monson I never mentioned horsepower. These bigger trucks are designed to be worked harder, and as such the hp and torque numbers will be set lower to preserve engine and transmission life, I was simply pointing out that even though the engine has a lower torque value, you're still getting more torque to the rear wheels.
+Marc Monson Torque is power, and horsepower is work. A diesel engine is like the big guy who can easily move 200lbs boxes, and a gas engine is the little guy who moves 4x faster than than the big guy but can only move 50lbs boxes, both would say they do the same amount of work, but the problem arises when you you need more power because all you have is 200lbs boxes. The little guy will use a lot more energy and get worn out faster.
torque is not power, hence why the word power is in horsepower. torque is a force. you can be applying torque but if you dont have any rotation no work is being done.
Near the end you said it's hauling 4000 lbs and "that's including the bed". So essentially, it's next to empty. Is this correct? I ask because it's intended to carry 10,000 lbs. So why so little if you intend to give a proper review? I've watched many of tfl videos and they actually challenge the vehicles when they can.
When are you guys going to realize that modern waste-gated turbo's are capable of putting out way more air than the engine they are on can even use so the argument about high altitude goes out the window? These engine are capable of making the same power at Denver and high altitude as they would in a place along any coast at sea level. Great videos but you always bring up that point on turbo'd vehicles when it isn't even a point to bring up.
+samus989. Horsepower is how FAST the work gets done. NOT how much work can be done. Example Cummins ISX15 with 450hp and 1650lbs-ft torque. Will haul 63,500kg(140,000lbs) without an issue. The same ISX15 with 600hp and 2050lbs-ft will do it faster, easier. With the same transmission, rear end ratio. Now compare the Cummins ISM(8.9 liters) at 450hp and 1150lbs-ft. This will struggle with the same 63,500kg(140,000lbs) load. All in all It would move a fire truck or motor home fine, because the amount of work is less. Also the other reason why the 4500-5500's have less power is the emission requirements are different for +14,001lbs GVWR (class 4) and up. Emissions are tighter for NOx and GHG. In order to make these big hp/torque numbers they need to turn up boost and change timing. All of which raise combustion temperatures, resulting is higher NOx. I could explain the whole emission set in detail from 1994 to 2010. But no one on here wants to read that on here. In the real world torque is king. Hp sell engines, torque wins races.

+mohammadkwt Basically because they were bankrupt and the government had a choice of either paying to close them down or giving the company to Fiat to see what they could do with it. They have actually done surprisingly well under Fiat control. You should also keep in mind that Chrysler Corporation has spent most of the last 20 years under foreign ownership, so it isn't like this is something new.

They are making better products with Fiat calling the shots, but Fix It Again Tony (FIAT) has its own problems. Maybe in a few years they will be more competitive.
4000lbs? 1.8 European tonnes, surely that'll take 3 or 4 times that. my tatty old land rover will take 3 ton and still pull alright and she's only a 2.5.
Ram sucks my ram 1500 I had to use for work has been having issues since I got it in 2014 I have had a new transmission it has electrical problems I just got a new Chevy 1500 it is better than my ram
first of all where is dot? you need to tarp your load lol and second our f550 dumps and even a big metal leaf box one gets better diesel mileage than that junk dodge the fords get about 10 mpg and more HP and torque and it won't rust and brake down like a dodge haha
I wanna see a review with 8k in the dump body and a skid loader on a trailer, pull that and give a review. That's how real work trucks roll daily...
Right? 4k is a one ton series truck legal load, and everyone puts on way more than that.
I always haul 4 tons (8000 lbs) of rock when I go to the quarry with my 1975 F-350 with the 12 foot bed. That old 390 doesn't struggle at all as long as it isn't too steep. 4000 lbs is nothing. I would not feel bad about hauling that in the bed of a 3/4 ton.
my gf's dumper articulates backwards too!!!
I routinely carry 5 tons in the dump bed of a 04 f550. That truck should be able to carry as much. Looks good!
The Old Truck review made me smile, and reminded me of my youth
They should offer the 5500 series with a pickup truck bed and all factory options. I am looking for one to haul a heavy truck camper.
+Scott W These trucks are Cab & Chassis. They have different axle widths compared to a 3500 Dually. I doubt the bed would have a whole lot of space.
Actually, the bed will fit with spacers, but the issue is it needs to be stretched to 9 feet long. It can be done custom, but I would like Ram to step up and offer it from the factory with all factory options. There are many who use a pickup with 5-8K in the bed all the time.

I did read about the build in a forum and that is what inspired me to want a SRW 5500 or put a bed on a 5500.
Not a Ram fan, but I enjoyed this. Hope you guys can do more commercial truck and van reviews in the future.
I've driven one of these trucks exactly the same with a van box on the back. From Chicago to Indianapolis it bounced around a lot not a pleasant ride being completely empty. Also had the 4X4 with the hemi instead of the diesel only 6 mpg empty could not believe how bad it was.
I never hauled so little dirt it was always mound from bed rail to bed rail top

Cummins = $9000 option right off the bat.
I couldn't care less about the tipper truck, but that Case loader is a tremendous machine. Nathan, you've got to do a review of it. please !!!!!

This 5500 has to be tested with a 10.000 lb payload.
My dream truck, this and a f550 all day.
Really? we've hauled over 4,000 pounds with a ford 350 that had over 300,000 miles hows does that represent what those trucks can do at all?
+Josh Kreiser in the bed?
ya we would fill that long bed diesel truck with coal and haul it on home once we borrowed a trailer and filled that up with coal too ... and as you could imagine you could feel that weight holding it down a bit
it ran like a champ until a tree fell on it turned a crew cab into a 2 door still ran tho lol

why only 4k pounds in the bed? I haul 8k in f550s from ten years ago
I would like to point out that the truck may have a PTO, but the bed sure sounded electric over hydraulic.

Hum - where is the truck assembly done ?
Why does this have less torque than the 3500?
Becasue the 3500 is more widely used and is in a different class

+aussiek2000 Yes, there is a PTO button that was unused (that's why it was mentioned) and the dumper is electric.

The truck is so majestic
Can the auxiliary switches shown at 2:43 be connected to up-fitter equipment such as the dumper and used to control it?
I don't see why not. The dumper has a run-of-the-mill switch and it would have to be taken apart and connected to the aux switches.

Beatiful Truck excelent DODGE RAM
Wow, neat to have you review something different. Not much of a load for a class 5 truck. More like a class 2 load.
Fiat is wise not to use it's own transmissions. Ford seems to be the only one that does that.
I took a big dump this morning...
if that truck costs that much it better last at least half a "billion" miles.
wouldn't it be actually be 6 wheel drive?
+Joshua W no. only 2 power axles, 4 wheel ends drivable.
I am sure the press sponsored truck loaders didn't set you up with it but; Y U NO COVER YOUR LOAD? If you wanna call 4k lbs a load..that is.
how did a companies like ram , dodge , jeep & chrslyer ended up under fiat control ? we you think about it , doesn't seems right .

I can hauling up to 9 tons whit my one ton and dump trailer going up the hill 65mph loaded for half off 50k
2 1/2 tonne? What? I put more than that on the back of my land rover tipper and bless her she's tiny in comparison to that.
Why can't they just come with manual gearboxes again
ram is only ones with a 2 to 5 Series
awesome
My 2500 has almost 700 foot pounds of torqe
One ton per mile price please
4000lbs? 1.8 European tonnes, surely that'll take 3 or 4 times that. my tatty old land rover will take 3 ton and still pull alright and she's only a 2.5.
Beast
That was hardly a good test of this thing. Just look at what hot shot guys tow/haul for starters.
rev with stock exhaust? come on.....
hmmm,... dirt play.
Ram sucks my ram 1500 I had to use for work has been having issues since I got it in 2014 I have had a new transmission it has electrical problems I just got a new Chevy 1500 it is better than my ram
2 tons, that is nothing
2 tons wasn't even worth the effort of the review.
first of all where is dot? you need to tarp your load lol and second our f550 dumps and even a big metal leaf box one gets better diesel mileage than that junk dodge the fords get about 10 mpg and more HP and torque and it won't rust and brake down like a dodge haha
Hum - where is the truck assembly done ?
+Steve Rob Mexico.
