Also, I love your drive. You crushed the fishing today and still are humble enough to point out a minor lack of detail costing a potentially big fish. It's those small details that you're able to compartmentalize that makes your feedback so good.
Thanks EJ! We gotta control the things we can control...not checking leader and knots for fray while fishing a giant pier - for shame lol
Great illustration!
Fish On!
Hey Roger, It was nice meeting you that day. I'd been fishing at that pier for over 9 years, I'd never caught more than 1 keeper at a time. When I got there, you told me you already caught few keepers. I thought you must be lying. But DAMN!!! 😂 No one ever limited out on that pier before.
When are you coming back? Let me know! I'm still waiting for my keeper fluke from you. I wanted signed too. 🤣
Lol!!! It wasn't easy but moving around the pier pays off!
Very nice job Roger. It’s always good to try new places that was a very successful day.
Thank you!!
Another great video! I like the split tail modification.
Thank you!!
I was fishing famous inlet in the south jersey and current was ripping so waited until it slowed down a bit and threw a 1/2oz with 6” shad up current. I saw my line slacking as soon as my jig lined up perfectly with the current boom fish on. 19” fat fish for a dinner lol 😅
Crazy stuff how that little adjustment casting angle made the difference. Lot of people jigging next to me with 2oz were looking at me like wtf is this guy going 😂😂😂😂
Excellent!!
Lots of bait there, great video
This is helpful information for sure. We're having a hard time getting keepers around the neighborhood pier where I live in Hampton VA. Gulp really gets a lot of bites but the tail biters are brutal. I'll get some Gulp jerk shad to try, but I think they'll get chewed up like the 4" swimming mullet. And we're catching dinks from 6"-12", with a 17.5" minimum. So I'm thinking the big ones might be elsewhere. But maybe we aren't using the right stuff. I've tried a bunch of different soft plastics and they either get chewed by tail biters or nothing. Seems like we'd get some bigger fish but not in the spots I've been so far this year.
I can learn alot from just one of your videos. Thanks roger. I need to up my flounder fishing with lures. I am a live mullet guy. I am very surprised you didnt have any hangups in this video.
I do mostly pier and jetty fishing with live bait. Going to try your blades. I have to watch 2 to 3 times to absorb all the information. Your videos are full of knowledge. My problem is that i get lots of hangups with rocks and other crazy pier fishermen.
@@abrahamjoseph6707 If you got the virtual lesson in ch.3 I go through the primary jigging technique for deep water piers - but generally speaking you want the lightest jig that can reach bottom, and you just want to skim/tick the bottom, esp if there are rocks involved you don't want that jig to roll into a crack then it's wedged and you're not getting it back. If you do get snagged remember where that snag is and cast short of it. If you cast and drag a 3oz sinker rig then yeah, you're going to lose it much more often.
My fingers hurt 😂awesome movie 😂
After editing that clip I stayed up and rewatched the movie lol
Got my blades yesterday! Headed down to my wade out spot in a few minutes to give them a shot
Haha awesome!!
Mine came in 2 days ago. They are just what I wanted. We'll see if the flounder on the Mississippi gulf coast will hit them.
Haha let me know!! I'm always curious how other flatfish species would respond to the same technique/baits.
Dang that's one long net!
Good point about how you're supposed to ACTUALLY measure fish. The tape measure going over the top adds an automatic inch. Measure your fish correctly people! Also, wow I know that pier! Props for avoiding the slipgut blitz
Probably adds more than an inch on a big fish lol...there's a lot of sloppy measuring going on for sure!
Anyone who stops watching your vids at 3 mins obviously is one of those who already know everything about every subject 🙄
It's a tiktok-endless scrolling culture these days!
Hey hi roger / teacher Any porgy fishing videos this year ? A few suggestions would be With a cranka crab , squidtrex, crappie marabou jigs , your one amazing fisherman , thanks for the video and the teachings..
Unlikely to see porgy but you never know!
Love your videos they are so informative and gave me the inspiration to splurge and pick up my own nice fluking combo and I was wondering what your thoughts on Carolina rigging the fluke for a more weightless presentation could be good inshore or when there’s not much wind
Thank you! No to carolina rigs - single jig is the way :)
My fingers hurt!😂
I'm usually kayak fishing for fluke, but hitting the piers is a great alternative. Thanks for the video! Wondering if you made the pvc rod/net holder or if you purchased it. I made my kayak cart and rod holders for my crate out of pvc but that looked great for pier and bank fishing!
Unfortunately long discontinued!
Hey Roger I'm so glad you did a video on a pier since most of the time that's what I'm limited to fishing. You beat me to the punch on the rod and reel change.....Lol
I was wondering the approximate number of casts you make in any given fishing session.
Most of the piers I fish get super crowded so I fish either very early or near dusk. The piers I fish have currents that are ripping so I have to fish the very beginning of the incoming, thru slack and first hour or so of outgoing. There are times that I can get them to hit at slack if I can get the jig right in front of their nose which makes them hit it out of agitation. Love your videos and gear recommendations. Keep them coming
I've got no idea re cast count but probably lower than it should be on account of my OCD lol...if the current is ripping size up your jig weight - on some piers/jetties I'm up to 1/2oz on a big tide but generally I start off with 1/4oz to see where the limits are. The deeper the water and faster the current the more you're relying on that free fall jig as opposed to a tight line swing.
@@CookingandFishing Thanks again for the advice! Like the idea of the split tail. Another super OCD’er here..
Question: Is there any reason why at 8:10 you switched to the swimming mullet from the jerkshad ? Did you just run out of the jerkshad or did something encourage you to switch
I was starting to free-fall that jig and the best free-falling bait is the 5" mullet. The jerk shad works well too but it's more of a gliding profile.
You are an unbelievably awesome guy. Your knowledge is incredible. I just wish you would tell us where you’re fishing, especially of them peers. A lot of people can’t even afford to go to a beach so that’s the only thing I would ask otherwise I love your show.
You’re a clown if you think he should be telling the entire internet where he’s fishing. You want him to burn the spot because you don’t want to do your own scouting and research? Come on man.
Agreed on the spot burning. Go figure it out yourself.
Be nice guys, new anglers may not know the etiquette when it comes to protecting spots, let's educate instead of being derisive. George, get out there, talk to some anglers, do some research, and fish. Soon you will develop your own spots. We've all been there, trust me it's more rewarding to find spots on your own, like finding treasure except more fun.
@@CytoplasmicGoo you’re probably absolutely correct but when you only have two years left, maybe to live, I think you might want to get to a spot a little quicker
Thank you for the kind words! One thing I don't do on this channel is name locations, sorry. Not sure what you mean by "can't afford" to go to a beach, but if you're limited to piers and bulkheads I would visit your local piers, fish them at different times of the season and tide phases, keep a simple log, and fish the ENTIRE pier - don't just go the end and cast into the abyss.
Just discovered your videos. I really appreciate all the details. Do you find that your fluke presentations and patterns work anywhere there's fluke? Or are they more specific to the water you fish the most?
Thanks! They should work everywhere in relatively shallow water - from shore to about 35 ft. Once you get on the deep reefs 60/70ft+ it's a different kind of fishing (one that I'm not interested in at all lol)
Amazing stuff Roger learned a ton! I kind of missed the first month of fluke fishing, but I put down the trout rod two weeks ago and started hammering the surf. I’ve only got two keepers (one of them was actually my cousins). The bite has been super inconsistent and I can’t quite figure it out. At what point in the season do you start hitting the surf and see consistent results? Thanks man.
Sup Nik!! Tbh you haven't missed much - out front should be getting good right about now, but it's been a slow start everywhere this season
Roger, would you recommend splitting the tail on a swimming mullet while jigging from a boat in deeper water too?! Never seen that before..
I'll start off with the tail intact but the deeper I'm fishing the more I want to split that tail - it'll fall just a bit faster and will give you an extra bounce or 2 before you have to recast into the drift
What kind of knife is that that you are using to bleed the fish
That's a Spyderco Dragnfly Salt serrated - best fish poking knife there is - ruclips.net/video/DQPQm5_3Kc0/видео.html
Have you fished other jerk shads like zoom & Zman? Do you prefer gulp because of the scent & do u believe other brand shads can perform similarly with some pro cure added ?
Thanks
Yes - we've done extensive side by side testing and it's not even close. I hate the fact that this is true but if you want to maximize your time on the water - use Gulp.
Great video, where did you get the rod holder?
Thanks! Unfortunately that thing is long discontinued
What was that dehooking device you used to dislodge the hook from deep inside the flounder's mouth? It appears that you returned it to your shirt pocket.
I've got everything listed in the video description
When you catch a very unattended line you cut it and see what new tackle you go home with...
I'm not wasting time collecting a 3oz bank sinker and 2lbs of cabbage lol
@CookingandFishing you only pull it up so's not to leave the extra line in the water...
@@pieseasmyseas good point but I'll save that kind of behavior for when I fish in a state that allows CC lol
@@CookingandFishing I allow CC any where I go...
Which do you feel yields more fish. Beach or pier?
Depends on the beach and pier. Generally you won't find huge concentrations of fish on an open beach - it does happen but it's rare and usually involves spectacular soft structure forming in a way that traps bait. Certain piers and jetties are great structure per se but can also extend over great structure, but they get fished heavily.
Have u ever tried to fish those paid fishing piers? And if so, how would u approach it to be more successful than others?
I have not but probably treat it like any other pier - some of them are huge and you have plenty of room to explore
@@CookingandFishing I keep getting invites to go, but I prefer the kayak lol
So many tips from one video. Thanks boss.
@@rawrfishing It can be entertaining esp if you're around some characters, and for w/e reason fishing piers/bulkheads are FILLED with characters lol
I don’t know if you check comments from all the videos, but where did you buy the net from and how many feet? Does it reach?
It should be in the video description - Major Craft First Cast Landing Net LC500 (5 meters)
@@CookingandFishing thank you so much. I’m having trouble with my vision terribly so I didn’t see that you had announced where to buy that net but I thank you for responding to me. It’s the right thing to do love your channel. I love your intelligence. I think you are the man.
I know you like a to use a 1/4 jig head and in this video your using bass fishing gear. Have you tried just using a 1/4 ounce bullet weight and Texas rig fluke and gotten the same amount of bites ??
Definitely not - your hook-up % will go way down trying to Tx rig gulp and there's no reason for it whatsoever. Jigheads with a 90 degree line tie gives your bait the best action as well.
