That's basically how my dad saw the flag, even though I had to look hard at it just to barely see Somalia in it.
Minnesota had it in the bag with the original tricolor design, but no, they blew it at the last minute and chose a bland and boring-looking variant of the tricolor. I hope all Minnesotans are proud of that awful decision.

Many state flags do not have the state name printed on them. Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico are a few examples.

Yeah really wish a different designed flag would have been chosen. I still prefer it over the current 1983/1957 redesign though for Minnesota.
Sidenote: most middle Eastern countries share pan-arabic colors of black, white, green and sometimes red added/swapped. They lack significant amounts of blue. At least the national flags do, I don't know about subnational flags much.
I mean technically people are arguing it looks like Somalia's flag, but that's East African. Though I guess it depends on your opinion of regional definitions.

The new Minnesota flag has an 8-pointed star in a Minnesota shaped field, with light blue in the rest of the flag - the Bonnie Blue had a 5-pointed star in the middle of a uniform dark blue flag. The Bonnie Blue was a beautiful flag in its own right but has too much ballast from Confederate history to be a good American flag today.

. . . The submitted and chosen tricolor (white, green, blue) looked nothing like Somalia's Puntland flag. But when the commissioners looked at many variation, one of them looked like Puntland (blue, white, green), but it wasn't chosen. And the final design had no tricolor.
. . . It seems to me the intermediate Somali-like variation excited right-wing media so much, they couldn't stop talking about it, and they still can't stop, when the selection process has already moved on. Do you have a better explanation?

If you put it upside down it doesn't look the same. The state areas that surround Lake Superior are not facing West rather than East as it does. It is "too simple" for my tastes and looks like something a small pacific ocean country would have.
Instead of trying to interpret the fine points of the state, why not just put them on the flag, Oh, that’s right they adopted that flag in 1893. One thing America is good at, thinking they can erase the past and d the difference between countries that have been around for thousands of years and those who last a few hundred.

The original submission was elite, then they fumbled the ball at the goal line. I beleive Ted Kaye's book has negatively impacted the vexilography community into promoting "oversimplified porn."

Simple can be better. Alaska for example has one of the best flags of all 50 states. But in this clip they didn't go into much detail as to why the old Minnesota flag needed to be changed. What was the problem?
You cannot draw it (or a lot of other state flags) accurately from memory: there are too many details. The name of the state appears on it, yet no one knows where ATOSENNIM is (subtle way of saying you can't read it from the back). To manufacture the flag, you have to pass the cloth through the screening process about 35 times (once for each color) -- each pass adds to the expense. The current flag (printed) in 3x5' retails at around $45 for good quality. The new design (if accepted) will cost about $25. Applique flags cost considerably more -- some approaching $1000 because of too much detail. Simpler flag designs tend to be displayed by the citizens more than complex ones -- examples, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado residents with flags generally under $25 fly the flag a lot more than Minnesota, Washington, Kansas, North Dakota. Those are adequately sufficient reasons right there.

The design was very lazy and unremarkable. Just a seal with a blue background. It didn't have much thought put into it and couldn't be distinguished from other state flags very well

This doesn't say "Minnesota" at all. It's OVERLY SIMPLISTIC to the point of meaninglessness. two shades of blue leaves it lacking contrast, and makes it feel too "cold".
It's more of base starting point of a flag. NAVA's blasted "rules" are taken to such an absurd literal degree that it is leading people to produce what are little better than logos for sport franchises.

I’m a resident of Seattle. Since we are as far north as as Minnesota I don’t relate your state with a blue sky and the sun.
The dissimilarity between WA and MN has very little to do with latitude.
@@phoenixskeptic7698 People also forget that Portland Oregon is further North than Minneapolis. Seattle is pretty far North lol. Very few people live in the far small bit of Northern parts of Minnesota that are aligned with Seattle.
Minnesota is often sunny. The summers are hot, humid and very sunny. The winters are often sunny too, and when it has snowed the sun is blinding when the sun rises thx to the snow.
I've lived in both Western WA and MN. Very different climates based on their geography and almost nothing to do with their latitude. Seattle, while beautiful, doesn't relate to blue sky and the sun either to anyone who's spent more than a few days there.

It was to strip history from the common conscience. The Minnesota flag has a poor white farmer plowing a field barefoot and a naked Indian riding a pony...hard to convince people that black lesbian transvestites built the nation as long as the old flags hint at our origins. BTW, this is a pretty memorable flag that any child could draw.

I believe my English teacher mother did a more than adequate job in educating me in the use of the language. While "simpler" is standard, "more simple" is still grammatically acceptable and may be used, and although "simpler" is regarded as more correct, the 2-syllable rule is not absolute (which is why "correcter" is actually incorrect). "More simple," due to its clunky nature, can come across as more emphatic than the simple "simpler."

This is insane. Abstract flags are not state flags. I have just seen designs for newer state flags that mean essentially nothing even symbolically because they are so disjointed. This is not to say that there are flags in the world that couldn't use a reinvention, But when reinvention becomes the rule, nothing ties anything back to heritage at all in that case. Take the united states for example. Each state flag, for the most part, should be its state seal on a basic color background. Not some abstract sculpture no one can properly decode. Whatever the state seal is that should be the flag. I think the reformation of our flags through conflicting new rules has gone far too far and has become more of a critics' arena, then reflecting a given state's actual heritage. I don't care if a kid in school can draw the flag based on simplicity. It's not their problem until they are taxpayers paying for said school. Harsh judgment call, sure, but this much has to be said. Its not my opinion: its my state. And the state is the traditional seal. I don't mind occasional adjustments, but a total reinvention of the entire concept is not necessary. Look up the rules of heraldry. Most of these new flags of our union will not age well.

Even if we put all of that aside, you still have to address the fact that this was 100% politically motivated. Every person who supported changing the flag in the first place is a Democrat. It's the same thing as them changing the name of Lake Calhoun, or renaming streets, schools, libraries, and so on, because they were named after old white men, which is bad apparently. The majority of the people in this state do not what the flag changed. This is the work of moral busybodies that make up a minority of the population.
It's the new version of the pearl clutchers of the late 1900s who tried to cancel The Simpsons and KISS for being too extreme/sexualized, except THIS time it's an attack on the history and culture of the majority of the population, and the descendants of the people who built Minnesota.
@@XP-nt9iy Curious. This conservative republican has been involved with efforts to change the flag of Minnesota (I rather like the Herald design, and have owned one since 1988) and other states. I have submitted my own design for a replacement for Montana's flag. Why? Not for political reasons, but because the flags are ugly, difficult to produce, difficult to describe, difficult to draw, too similar to the flags of half the other states, and too expensive because of their complexity. The committee selecting a new flag for Minnesota IS bipartisan. And of course, all that you are saying here STILL has nothing to do with the LIE that this flag is based on that of Puntland. Check in with reality one in a while.
@@davidpawson9047 As far as being too hard to draw or too expensive to produce, that should not be a factor in deciding to change something that's been virtually the same for 130 years. How much more expensive could it possibly be? Why does everyone need to be able to draw it? If it's ugly, why can't it's simply be redrawn to look better?
Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Delaware all have flags that are hard to draw, but that doesn't make them bad flags. Even if you try to draw California's flag, it will probably look terrible unless you have some experience.
If the state flag is going to change it should be a bi-partisan effort, and not something done by one vocal minority of one political party.
@XP-nt9iy The design as it currently appears retails for about $50 for a quality 3x5' printed flag (as opposed to those cheap eastern Asian flags that will last 2 days in a brisk breeze). The designs proposed, on the whole, would cost $20 to $25 each. If you want an applique flag, the current design would run to several hundred dollars, while the suggestions would range from about $40 to $80. Even if the state were the only entity using them, the cost to the taxpayers of this ephemeral product would drop by 50% to 75%, depending. With a design that is cheaper to produce, more citizens will choose to display the flag: look to Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona as examples. There are so many colors and elements involved in the seal that drawing the flag is difficult, to say nothing of producing it. And then there is the difficulty of distinguishing it in displays involving the flags of other states, so many of which employ their state seals on a blue field. So, from a distance of 100 feet, distinguish the flag of Minnesota from that of Montana or New Hampshire.
So, why not just adopt the Somali flag. This is almost a copy of the Somali flag. Look it up.
If by almost a copy you mean it has the star shaped and positioned differently, on top an inverted dark blue chevron that the somali flag doesn't have, then yes they are the same. Oh look, light blue on a flag! Somalia!
I think it’s a beautiful flag (I’m in West Virginia). The 2 shades of blue (the lighter blue reminds me of water, which is perfect for the Land of 1000 Lakes), the V shape, sort of Pac-Man shape, reminds me of the shape of Minnesota’s eastern border.

The new Minnesota flag has an 8-pointed star in a Minnesota shaped field, with light blue in the rest of the flag - the Bonnie Blue had a 5-pointed star in the middle of a uniform dark blue flag. The Bonnie Blue was a beautiful flag in its own right but has too much ballast from Confederate history to be a good American flag today.
