Imagine all your thoughts, starting a new hobby. Countless hours of watching videos. Just to stumble across this gem, and all your questions being answered
So many people discuss how to use an airbrush, YOU SHOW PEOPLE HOW THEY WORK, this is a huge difference, and as a visual learner, this is so helpful, thank you
I die on the inside every time someone calls themselves a visual learner.
@@nef36 Can someone please tell me what boobs are (I'm a visual learner btw)
@@michaelsoddy1892 sameee
@@nef36why is that? I mean genuinely, If anyone is new to airbrushing and was told all of this information in audiobook style would’ve probably found some other hobby to get into lol, nothing wrong with needing visuals for something as complex as this.
@@EDYKILLS Aaaaand that's my problem with the concept of "visual learners", because it implies that some people are not visual learners.
Everyone is a "visual learner". What people mean when they say "thank you for making this easy to understand for visual learners like me!" is "Wow, you're pretty good at explaining things to a general audience. I learned something today, which I am not used to doing, because people are generally sh**t at explaining things properly"
The idea that you, or someone else, are a "visual learner" was a lie told to you by your teachers as a way for them to excuse their sh**tty teaching skills.
Anyone else here because of Poorhammer?
Just arrived lol
Aye. Time to level up.
Yup
Ooh! Me!
I'd seen this video when it came out, but now that poorhammer is berating me into possibly buying one, I'm back at it again after they reminded me of it
Beginner airbrusher here. That flowchart for spidering and speckling with the corrective actions is GOLD!!! Thanks so much Scotty.
How's your journey?
In 1981 i started airbrushing t-shirts while in college, i was a totally slow beginner. One day a local young airbrush artist worked with me at the tourist shop in panama city beach florida.
A young girl came and and asked if we could airbrush a photo of jim morrison onto a t-shirt, she had a round button about the size of a quarter with morrison's photo on it . He was just filling in for our friend so he looked at me and said ''You wanna do this ?'' I said no way, i was way too slow and awkward with airbrush to try that for a paying customer.
He took it from her and told her ''come back in 45 minutes''. She smiled and ran off. For the next 45 minutes i watched Wes Hardin freehand airbrush a large portrait of Jim Morrison onto a t-shirt and i was in awe of his speed and talent. Back then the local guys had a policy ''No penciling, no laying out any lines except with freehand airbrush'' They didn't even allow pencils to be in the airbrush booth lol. Young guys then were into challenging themselves.
I've never seen an artist do something that amazing since, literally in 45 minutes it was complete and looked not only accurate but had feeling and emotion to it and was absolutely beautiful , he'd made the hair fade out off to the sides of the shirt, it was something to see. Wes had been airbrushing for a few years and he'd tired of portraits, i think that day he wanted to show off for me. When she picked it up her mouth dropped open with amazement. She was as happy as she could be. Little did she know she'd gotten a piece of fine art that spring day, and my understanding of airbrush was never the same

Hey, thanks for sharing that
What kind of paint do you use to airbrush on a T Shirt?
This was great. thanks for sharing
@@williamthomas4125 , back then we used a very popular brand of 't-shirt paint' called Aqua Flow
Am a spray painter by trade. A cheapy face mask is fine for acrylics BUT the harmful (cancer causing/liver killing) compounds in solvent based paints are readily absorbed through your eyes and skin. Respirator + gloves don't really cut it. So.. Scott's wife if you're reading, you know what to do!
Correction... Cancer is caused by ingesting all animal products, milk and bird-menstruational cycles/ eggs and eating dead animal flesh/corpses
Ehhh everything’s killing you in someway might as well have a reason to die.
What does cut it? Do I gotta paint in a hazmat suit?

Speaking as a comparatively new airbrusher, the method Scott demonstrates for cleaning, by cleaning the cup into a container *before* you spray cleaner *through* the airbrush, was a revelation for me. It makes cleaning so much quicker and easier, and my hesitation to use the airbrush much because of the labor involved in cleaning between colors has been drastically reduced!
I'm coming back to this video a few years after it was first posted because I just bought an airbrush for the first time, and I can't stop chuckling at the Morbius poster in the background.
What a world we live in today.

"The most recognizable part of the airbrush is the needle"

Right? Had no clue a needle was involved.
If I ever decide to airbrush, I'll come back and watch this video.
Again
I just got an airbrush for my anniversary and I did this very thing.
Yup - Ive watched this three times, getting an air brush tomorrow. I just used one of my friends airbrushes to do some simple base coats and shades. So fun.

Dude, the sheer amount of detail about the functions and mechanics of an airbrush is super helpful and interesting--it clarifies the reasons behind why certain pieces and parts work the way they do. Well done! Great tutorial.
This is 2 years old and still immensely helpful. Thank you for doing this. I was nervous and just went all in for my first airbrush and bought the latest Iwata so I definitely don't want to mess anything up lol
I am just about to do the same! What compressor did you get? How have you found it??
Why would it not be useful after a short two years?
What I personally like the most is that you’re not cutting your video every 3 seconds, making your head snap all over the place and voice sounding unmatched. I guess people do that because they don’t have good speaking skills, so they remove the awkward pauses and it ruins everything. You, sir, have excellent camera and presentation presence. Thank you! Oh, and your info is extremely helpful!
SUPREMLY helpful!! OUTSTANDING!! 😊A part-time mini-painter for 50 years, I steered away from air brushing after deep frustrations with my early attempts. This video, especially when added to your "after 1 year of air brushing" video, are the most thorough, concise, easy to understand, directly applicable introductions to effective, non-frustrating air brush use (plus just watching you paint) that I've ever seen. As a one time tech-writer by trade, I'd also like to say that your approach to technical instruction is outstanding. My decision to use or not use an air-brush and how I'd approach it now feel SO much better informed. Thank you so much. Awesome, awesome, awesome.
Perfect timing! I was just looking into getting started with air brushing.
Hey daddy
I’m so glad you mentioned the Venturi effect! As an engineering nerd, I appreciate this 🥰
"Let me help you figure out how to answer this question for yourself" - this is the best teachers attitude. Thank you for this video, it's helped me organize my approach to buying an aribrush a lot. Great kickstart!
This video is excellent dude. Been paining for nearly 20 years and never really given airbrushing serious thought because it was just too far outside my comfort zone. Very informative - just awesome man. Thank you!
Watching this video has given me more confidence to start practicing. I am totally new to this so this was very helpful. Now, to your video…you are truly the Alton Brown of airbrushing. It was very detailed and helpful. Don’t stop doing what you do so well. Thank you.
Subscribed!
I just got an airbrush for scale models (mostly Star Trek) and used it for the first time a few days ago.
I then realized I need more education and found this video after some how-to searches on RUclips.
I've watched a number of them, but this is the one every one should watch.
Your diagram and explanation of what's going on in there when you pull the trigger is what most tutorials gloss over but its the kind of detail I needed.
Well done!
I've been using an airbrush with an air filter, with a quality sensor in it in the room for a few months. By doing this I've learnt one important thing, once you've finished airbrushing the air quality in the room stays really bad for something like 45-60 minutes after I finish. I've taken to leaving my face mask on while I clean up after I've finished.
Now things like these are the major reason I watched the video from the start. The question of "Is it safe to airbrush in your bedroom or small apartment" is likely the most relevant to the viewers.
@@AsheramK I also noticed that if you just have an external window or door open in the room the air quality doesn't get AS bad, and it gets better quicker once you've finished. It's obvious, but some people seem to think having a window open on the other side of the room is pointless unless there is something blowing the air out.
You really shouldn't be airbrushing in your home unless you're using some kind of air extractor or airbrush booth. Paint particles including acrylics are seriously bad for you.
Do you use a spray booth?
Do you even extract, bro?!
Love your videos but as a airbrush salesperson and instructor of 26 years, I have the say the larger the nossle/needle +quality of the airbrush are the most important factors for someone new to airbrushing. A 0.5 nossle size makes for less clogs= more likely someone new to airbrushing wont get fustrated and give up on airbrushing.
I'd wear that airbrush trouble shooting flow chart on a t-shirt. It's basically what I'm going to talk about to anyone who says "hi" to me anyway.
Get it printed up-side down so you can read it by looking down at your own shirt.
This is pure gold content. It's incredible how many air brushes come with zero instructions. Just a metal tool in a box. Good luck!
Am thinking of getting an airbrush for cookie/ cake decorating. Came across your video and was sooo good to get an understanding of what is involved. Thank you for an informative and interesting video!!!
I have several airbrushes that run the gamut. Siphon feed, side feed, gravity feed, single action, double action, etc etc. I decided to try a different type of airbrush and I got it this last Tuesday. I tried it out and I love it. It’s the easiest one for me to use. It’s the Neo TRN-1. Working the trigger is so much easier for me. Pull it back and paint, then let the trigger go forward to stop. I realize the regular dual action with the button type trigger on top is no problem, but for me it always has been. Anyway, I’m looking forward to using my new airbrush. Thank you for the great videos you provide and have a great evening!
I build 1/12 & 1/6 scale dioramas, and have come to the conclusion that airbrushing would save me time, and heighten the level of my graffiti on each project. Only so much I can do with brushes and markers. That said, of all the “airbrush for beginners” videos I’ve watch on RUclips, this one has, by far, been the most helpful and beneficial. The fact that you broke down basic mechanics and even threw up a graph on how to avoid speckling and spiderwebbing was the $#!T! So, thanks. &☮️
Sorry to comment on an old video, but this is something I’m just now (2024) getting into, and this is probably the best video to a completely new airbrush user, which I am. Great video, I had to subscribe.
Wow that was amazing! That was the most through approach I have ever seen that didn’t involve hands on training. I am going to buy all my stuff through your links and get on your patreon.
Thank you for the support!
I couldn't find good beginner airbrush videos early last year when I bought my own airbrush, so it's just been sitting in my tool closet. Looked up videos again today and THIS. This is excellent. THANK YOU. I like the explanation of how the tool works, too. Very helpful.
This was a step up from all the other beginner videos. I've been airbrushing for a long time and still learned a thing or two from this tutorial. Great Work!
I just started my research into airbrushing and you have been extremely informative. I could easily follow your directions and understood everything you said clearly. Thanks.
You are an excellent speaker, my friend. Wonderful presentation! You can do this for a living, if not already.
This is the best "beginner airbrush" video I've seen. Thank you so much!
Glad I found you, old man here trying to expand his horizons. Got a cheap model to practice on. Thanks for being thorough in your explanation. Owe you one. 👍

Cheers Miniac. Really great video tutorial. Have made copious notes and am heading back to the paint station with reinvigorated enthusiasm.
Well done, a very well produced video, concise but giving me all the information I need. I'm not even into modelling but just bought a cheap airbrush II already have air in my workshop)for painting fishing lures, and I only do that in a pretty basic manner. I love to see what's involved in others' hobbies though, their skill and ingenuity. Roll on YT.
This is by far the best airbrush tutorial for miniature painting. I'm a beginner and come back to this video for reference from time to time. Its become a vital tool for my learning.
watching this two years after the fact, the morbius poster is ahead of it’s time.
morbin time, if you will.
Excellent teaching! I am going to be painting a rainbow trout wood carving with zero airbrush experience. After watching your video, I am much better prepared. Naturally, I will practice a great deal before I begin, but now I have a much better opportunity to learn control. Well done!
I'm not an airbrush painter of my minis but I still immensely enjoy your videos my dude. I'll send this video to my Dad who does paint his minis with an air brush. Also happy to leave a comment for the engagement.
Literally about to do my first air brushing tomorrow. Perfect timing, thanks Scott.
Scott, solid vid! Best I've seen on the subject. One suggestion? We clear our paint cups the same way, but I use a sciency "wash bottle". It floods the cup, ensuring those pesky dried bits and pieces are washed out. Thanks for the info and entertainment. Digging the podcast too!
OMG.....I have always been fascinated with airbrushing especially seeing some beautiful work on motorcycles etc. I bought an airbrush years ago and plan to dig it out of the garage and practice.
I’m so disappointed by the lack of lab coat during the scientific chalkboard bit 😂
This is easily solved by watching that part of the video upside down.
I feel if he was to use a Lab coat, it'd have to be a black lab coat
And a change of glasses. Black rims.
You've been reading too many Far Side cartoons, if it's possible to read too many Far Side cartoons . . .
Just come across this and I've got to say as a newbie to airbrushing, I've watched quite a few beginner tutorials and this is absolutely the best by far. I am saving this to keep referring back to. This is sooo helpful and informative. This is a must watch for any newbie out there. Love this.
Nice video, dude. I’ve learned most of this through other videos and practice. This video crams all that XP into a very concise, yet easy to understand class. Well done!
I just wanted to say thank you so much. Long time lurker on your channel and honestly your videos (and motto) has really helped me paint more minis.
I'll tell you guys the single biggest and most frustrating problem I had starting airbrushing and the solution -
I was experiencing constant clogging. It felt like I couldn't even get through a half hour painting session without experiencing a clog, much less a big batch of troops without having to stop and thoroughly clean the airbrush several times. The longer the painting session, the worse it got. One of the effects of this was that I thought I was mixing my paint to thick so I ended up over thinning, causing even more problems, bit still did not fixing the clogging issue.
The culprit turned out to be the cheap disposable pipe cleaners you can get at virtually any store. They shed tiny nearly transparent fibers which would inevitably work their way into the paint and clog up the tip. Stopping to clean the airbrush in the middle of a painting session would just make the problem *worse* as it would deposit more fibers into the airbrush.
If you're using the disposable pipe cleaners, I suggest you switch to a mix of the reusable nylon type pipe cleaners and interdental brushes. I cannot stress enough how big of a change this small thing was for me. It took airbrushing from the realm of a being a massive headache to something I really enjoy doing. I recently did an art project where spent nearly every free hour I had for two weeks straight with a combination of four different airbrushes where I was honestly pretty terrible about keeping them clean and I had exactly zero clogs.
On a related note, I would also advise you don't use paint brushes that like to shed bristles or are otherwise decaying to mix your paint and don't use paper towels to clean the tip either.
Well, look at it this way, you don't have to clean up it every 2 minutes or something like brushes.
Great tip - thanks!
I love how excited you got describing the Venturi effect!
I love this video! So informative for us newbies. And the way the dude does his presentation, it's like listening to a nuclear physicist who also happens to sideline as the lead guitarist for some death metal band. Awesome!

I appretere this video for it's informative content and approachable stucture well suited for absolute beginners and novice airbrushers - this is what I could not find when I started early this year.
Thank you dude. I only got myself an airbrush 3 days ago and so far I've only used it for base coating my Chaos knight's chassis and o got a really good finish. Not tried highlighting or anything crazy but it certainly seems to be the business for large vehicles and such.

I feel like I'm really just echoing others, because I literally am, but you hit a homerun for me with this video. I bought an airbrush kit, having used commercial paint sprayers in my younger days and currently am a house painter, thinking it would be a breeze. Just opening the kit was super intimidating and I had no frame of reference like I thought I would. Watched 4 other videos, that were for my specific kit, and learned nothing other than it was a decent price. Even in a tear down video I learned next to nothing. You freaking nailed it, dude. Taught me a lot in a simple video, and gave me a starting point so I know what questions to ask in the future. Thanks a lot!
THANK YOU for making this. You’re now officially going to forever be the very 1st actual HOW-TO of Air Brushing.
Great job, sir. Best airbrushing video tutorials I have found and viewed. I am a complete airbrush noob, but inclined to all of the technical aspects of any tool I use and how they work, including strengths and weaknesses, pros and cons. I am getting back into scale aircraft modeling after a 40-year hiatus, and, being 57, have less patience for errors and mistakes. I'd like to learn the art of air brushing sooner and better than later and your videos help tremendously. Keep up the good work Miniac!
It’s Morbin’ time
I did use diving air tank instead of a compressor. Just had to figure out an adapter between different threads and I was good to go. It was pretty awesome since the air was already dry, and it was super silent, just the hiss. And I guess you could take it wherever you need without worrying about electricity :P
Downsides were that I had to get it refilled from time to time, though a 15L tank did last me a good while and I had a luxury of having a few of those, so I could switch if needed. And it took a bit more space than a small compressor.
Honestly, this is one of the best, all inclusive, quick view, miniature airbrushing videos I've seen. Well done!
That was by far the best introduction to airbrushing I have seen yet & I have seen a few, I used to be right into model making back in the late 80's & early 90's & pretty much the only paint the basic hobbiest had was Airfix in those little tins, & if you wanted to stick to the given paint jobs they sometines cost as much as the actuall model, this has given me hope to now do the models I have always wanted with a decent paint job, thanks for the tips.
We need to get this man a lab coat for the Airbrush Fluid Dynamics SCIENCE! Great vid. Thanks Scott.
Thank you for the video, I found it very informative. I'm about to fire up my second airbrush, my last one purchased 50 years ago. The only thing I would add as advice to the first time user would be to suggest getting a ream of cheap printer paper and just play the heck out of the airbrush. A clean airbrush, is a happy airbrush.

Super useful video! Especially for me, since I started airbrushing less than a month ago and I am having some of the problems with pressure-dilution-distance. You helped me figure out why some of them happen.
Also I am using Vallejo Flow Improver instead of the Thinner...have you tried that? Is there a significant difference between the two products?
The thinner dilutes the paint and makes it easier to achieve a smooth airbrush performance. A flow improver extends the drying time of the paint and prevents dried paint on the needle tip. A flow improver is a synthetic oil.
@@TheCimbrianBull thanks! but now it seems that I need both to achieve smooth performance and prevent drying...

You're welcome. After diluting the paint I add a few drops of flow improver and mix it thoroughly. That way I'm able to have a long airbrushing session going with no worries.

3. What is the capital of Wyoming?
This video is bookmarked for LIFE, because I can't explain it better myself. Thank you for this one!
Scott in front of a chalkboard makes me think of a crazy Science teacher
I recently tried to get a tankless compressor for a older, but seldom used Paasche VL, a siphon fed airbrush and I have to say these things need ether a higher psi compressor or one with a tank. I was struggling to get a coat on anything and it wasn't much good for anything but quick bursts. Now I went out to my local Hobby Lobby and got a Iwata NEO gravity fed and everything is right as rain. With the same compressor I was able to lay down perfect Primer coats. Note that the paint used was Vallejo White Surface Primer, so thinness shouldn't have been an issue.
Well damn Scott you can sell anyone a airbrush. Now for you to become a Iwata door to door salesman
Siphon feed airbrushes are very common. The nice part about them is you can get small cups, not the bottles, for them and you can quickly change colours.
Nozzle/needle size is more to do with paint quality than detail. Better paints has smaller pigment so you can use a finer setup. Bigger pigments, like the ones in brush ranges, will need a bigger setup. No amount of thinning with reduce the pigment. It only thins the binder.
Technically ALL airbrushes mix externally. The nozzle extends to outside the nozzle cap, even if it is just a hair width. And the air only comes into contact with the paint after the nozzle cap.
Great explanation of airpressure vs paint visosity.
Great explanation of trigger control.
Great demo with that space marine.
Great tip with the needle movement to get the paint out of the seal area.
