What I primarily heard on this is that Wheeler likes the direction Alchemy is going, and I love that. I love how my favourite competitive mtg player and content creator likes the direction the usually mistakenly maligned format is going.
I've noticed a lot of the issues people have with Alchemy mechanics are due to fallacies that happen in paper magic evaluation, like people thinking stealing cards from libraries is so powerful or thinking Alchemy is too random when random-heavy effects are all over Magic.
@Mordalon That's so true. Draft is often used by the devs as a way to do a "restricted tutor", I have noticed, things for them to batch certain things that aren't doable in paper or to enable tutoring for a particular clarity whilst making sure that it's not super flexible that it becomes broken. Conjure solves the "what if I want tokens to actually make a difference in other zones" which I imagine has been tried by R&D before and just found out its a hassle for paper cause that's a fairly easy jump of logic to do. Perpetually is just codifying Skullbriar/Me in ways that either need too much text (gaining abilities that aren't keywords) or ensuring that there's no way to "cheat" things like people do in normal magic with the "a card changing zones is considered a new object." like with the card Reezug the Bonecobbler. All of these mechanics aren't even getting pushed anymore to be like HS, they're just getting pushed in power like normal cards and the design philosophy has stayed the same after HBG as Wheeler says.
Agree with Wheeler about Alchemy and heist. Get the kneejerk aversion to alchemy as it was not well designed early on and the drafts tend to suck, but for constructed formats they’re pretty fun cards. And yeah BS happens but that’s just Magic
About that Pioneer Masters planeswalker discussion. My only draft so far has been a 7-2 Izzet deck that splashed Silumgar and had Pia and Kiran Nalaar and... 2 baby Jaces somehow. Holy, that card is carry in limited. Whoever handed me these two yesterday, thank you.
RUclips makes it really easy to THINK you're subscribed to a channel when you're not. Watch a couple videos, and you'll start seeing every new one... until they suddenly decide it's time to show you something else. Those messages about the ratio of subscribers to non-subscribers have helped me remember to subscribe to channels I don't want to lose on several occasions. I think most people are so desensitized to the "like and subscribe" call to action that you really don't need to dance around it. We like your videos and want other people to see them too. :)
Something like Soulfire Grand Master being absent raises an eyebrow towards the upcoming Return to Tarkir set. This happened a few years back with Monastery Swiftspear not being in an Arena reprint set due to secretly being in the then-upcoming Brothers' War.
Fun fact about heist, if the card they take randomly form your deck is a card you scried to the bottom of your library or if its the top card of your library you can look at, the card they took is revealed
I feel like every Innistrad set has some sort of instants&sorceries mechanic that I always go, "Oh yeah, that's from [insert set]!" because in my mind, it's not _that_ connected to Innistrad. The first block had miracle, Shadows had escalate, and VOW had cleave.
I got more into drafting around the time of that Jace. That's also the one featured in an early Friday Nights episode where Matt played against someone with that Jace. "Matt Wiggins, welcome to Mill Town. Population: All of your cards!"
I get why they didn't want to do the rules text changes like they did for the old border planeswalkers secret lair, but I think that worked much better at evoking that era of magic than what they did with Liliana here.
I loved Dominaria Remastered, but mainly because I managed to snag a box on sale for 100 bucks, and got one of each of the tutors, as well as a second fancy full art vampiric one. Don't really care for the Ravnica nor Innistrad ones, with all those cards that only ever matter on limited.
I’m sure that they made pioneer masters draftable for financial reasons, but it does rather undermine the purpose of a ‘print into Arena’ set. Maybe that was unavoidable but it is slightly annoying. Edit: fwiw as someone who occasionally designs proxies, having an official way of doing ‘97 frame DFCs is huge.
How does it undermine that any more than the Shadows Over Innistrad, Tarkir and Amonkhet remastered sets? Also, it kind of defeats the purpose of bringing Pioneer to arena if you just do stuff like Anthologies, otherwise it's just a narrow snapshot of what is viable in Pioneer and not true 1 to 1.
For what it's worth, I believe there was exactly one example of a colorless old border, but it wasn't even on a card, but on a Sliver token. I guess they just didn't have enough material there to make it into a proper border?
I do find it weird that they put each flipwalker in the set from magic origins except for the Chandra flipwalker card. The one I wanted the most from all the flipwalkers.
I've been seeing the same dental practice my whole life... though there's a ship of theseus thing going on there and nobody who worked there when I started with the form of it I started with is still there, but there's a chain of continuity despite that.
I would legit LOVE it if in some set some day, part of the alternate treatment was the use of Roman numerals in place of standard digits. So any number in the casting cost or P/T was a Roman numeral. I think that'd be rad on Theros (Yes, I know it's Greek but it's the only place they currently have that it fits) or the plane Prava and Licia are from, should we ever visit it.
I think the non-innistrad reprints are not because red rares weren't good, but because they weren't valuable. Most expensive one is a mythic at like 6$, which doesn't exactly move product
James asks why they keep doing old-border walks when he thinks they look bad. The whole reason they moved away from old-border was because the newer ones looked better and were more readable. Yet despite a lot of people not liking old-borders, they also have their audience too, so you can figure the same applies here.
I think the "unsubscribed" stat is getting inflated by people who actually avoid even having a login or might be using programs/sites to circumvent the ads where they don't log in. Every creator has been commenting on that issue for a while...
