  • Twister: Ride It Out was a special effects attraction located in the New York section of Universal Studios Florida. The attraction, based on the 1996 film Twister, was announced in 1997 and replaced the Ghostbusters Spooktacular attraction. The attraction was hosted by Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt, who starred in the original film. The attraction closed on November 2nd, 2015, and was replaced with Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon, which opened on April 6th, 2017. In this video, we take a look at the 17-year history of the attraction, which brought guests face to face with a tornado.

The thing that made Universal so cool to me was that they were recreating these iconic movies and throwing you into them with amazing practical effects or animatronics. Now all they do is sit you in front of a movie screen and have your seat move, and its just ruined the magic of feeling like you're in a tornado or being attacked by Jaws.

The concept of Universal's original attractions is why I always preferred Universal over Disney. Attractions like Kong/Jaws/BTTF/ET were so good because they made the story revolve around us, the guest, instead of just coming along for the ride. We were escaping from Kong, surviving an attack from a great white shark, helping Doc capture Biff and riding a bike to help ET get back to his home planet and it was AWESOME. Now those experiences are lesser and lesser due to the lack of animatronics, practical effects and fully created sets.

Back to the Future was a giant screen with a moving seat and remains one of the most memorable rides These days you can get attacked by ghouls and dragons, fly in a quidditch match, escape through Gringots, become a high value target witness escaping in a high speed chase, ride through krustyland, get a new high score in mib, join spiderman, go through a comical flume ride. Many of which have Animatronics like Kong at the end of skull island and the bats plus it has that amazing animatronic sectiin in the queue, all of MiB basically animatronics, a lot of animatronics in Forbidden Journey and both queues for Forbidden Journey a d Gringots have some amazing animatronics, the animatronic mummies on the mummy ride, the giant worm in kong, dinos in jurassic park, parts of Popeyes barge and dudley do rights flume ride have animatronics. Animatronics dont make a ride better and even a lot of the older rides didnt rely heavily on animatronics.

I remember when I was a little kid, me and my family were going to go on this ride, but I was terrified to the point where I was crying and screaming that it was real and I didn't want my family and I to go in. My family was trying to convince me that it wasn't real, but nothing worked. A staff member that helped operate the ride saw the whole thing and offered to take me to the control booth behind the scenes and showed me how everything worked so I wouldn't be so scared anymore. It worked and I actually thought it was really cool! I ended up going on the ride almost 5 times in a row after that! What an amazing experience!

I went to universal with my family, and after we finished riding the Mummy, I say “hey, let’s go ride twister now!”
We walk up to the space where twister once stood, unconscious it had been removed. And there was the giant NBC headquarters standing in the place of the beloved attraction.

True, from the guest perspective twister ride it out wasn't the most thrilling attraction. I still enjoyed it and experienced it every time I visited Universal Orlando. Personally what I enjoyed from it most was the nostalgia factor from just loving the movie so much. It was kind of an extension of the movie.

I miss the days where attractions didn't rely so heavy on screens, it was what made Universal so interesting in the 90's-mid 2000's. Every attraction was a set, there were props and physical effects. Now it's too much simulator rides and being sprayed with water.

I enjoy the movie, whenever it's on I'll stop whatever I'm doing to watch it. The simulators for the Potter rides I don't have a problem with because both are a mix of thrill rides (Forbidden Journey using animatronics, Escape from Gringotts using the roller coaster/spinner), it's more of Fallon/Despicable Me/Transformers that annoys me. The rides all start to feel the same, which becomes a bad thing for anyone who wants to visit the parks a second time. If the rides don't stand out from each other, why bother coming back?

While completely out of place in the NY section of the park, I always loved Twister🌪. I think part of that is because the movie absolutely fascinated me as a young kid - not sure if I saw it before the attraction, but they did such an amazing job of capturing the essence of the film given the limitations of the show building. I’ll always have fond memories of the queue and the pre-shows in particular, and the soundtrack as you exited with Bill Paxton’s narration. It was definitely a great way to start a day at the park.

Concerning the outdoor humidity- the lower the humidity, say the winter times- they could generate a larger twister. However, with higher humidity- all months outside of Dec/Jan- the twister would be smaller. Your video reminded me how much I miss the 'Finger of God' rip

I just don't see the appeal of Jimmy Fallon having his own ride. It just feels so out of place for a talk show host to have an attraction, what happens if he leaves the show? Do they replace him with whoever takes over?

I miss this attraction so much--Jimmy Fallon is funny as a person and late night host, but RTNY just can't hold a candle to good ol' Twister. Being there on closing night and seeing how many people came out dressed up in Bill Paxton and Helen Hunt's costumes from the movie was a bittersweet thrill. Great vid. I'm getting hugely anxious just seeing the pre show on video. I was irrationally terrified of tornadoes as a kid after experiencing a small one in central Ontario, but a few years later on our trip to Florida my extended family insisted on seeing this show and yelled at me for crying too much. I appreciate everything that went into the show seeing it described here, but oh my gosh did I not realize until seeing this video that that experience is still with me 12+ years later!

I have a short story about my first and only trip to this park in 2016.
My dad and I just got off The Mummy. It broke down right in the beginning before the launch bay. We went into the gift shop and we started chatting up the old guy at the register. We told him we we’re from Cali and our first trip and he wrote us a note for Twister across the street. Little did we know, that this ride was on its way out.
This note aloud my dad and I to go behind the scenes into the control room and watch the two dudes make the Twister! My first ride ever!
Listen, I’ve been going to Disneyland and Knott’s countless amounts of times collectively, and no matter what I never received a benefit like that.
Shoutout to that guy in the gift shop, Twister is the reason why I get butterflies for set design and stage shows. Thanks for reading ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ

As a younger child I went to Universal Orlando and was terrified of Twister, mostly because I didn’t like storms. When we went on the field trip I didn’t realize the ride was replaced until after we left the park. I had no idea it was replaced by Jimmy Fallon until I watched this video.

Second of all, I remember bits and pieces of this ride, seeing as I was only 6. I don't remember any of the queue, sadly, and barely remember the ride. I only remember crying at the pyrotechnics and wind, and my dad carrying me out during the show. Watching this made me reminisce on those memories and what I missed out on. Good on you my man

Thank you so much for the kind words Timothy! While we try to educate on the history of the attractions, our main focus usually ends up being on the entire ride experience. Some people might not remember or never had the opportunity to experience the ride, so we try to be as detailed as possible. As for the pyrotechnics, I would always avoid being dead center due to the giant fireball at the end, it was almost as bad as the gas dock part on the Jaws ride!
Jimmy Neutron's Nicktoon Blast has been added to the list, thank you for your suggestion! We will most likely do this attraction and Nickelodeon Studios in back to back episode so time in the near future.

I hadn't seen the movie when my family went to Universal Studios Florida but that didn't stop us from going in and checking it out. I was young and at that stage in life when every little thing freaked me out so needless to say this ride had really good atmosphere and did its job quite well. It did its job so well when my family returned home from vacation (to a place where tornadoes were a possibility) I was actively terrified of a tornado happening where we lived, until my dad pointed out that tornadoes don't form in cities...I don't know if that's actually true but it calmed me down :)
Long story short, rides/experiences like this are what I remember from a vacation that happened almost 20 years ago because it was well made, the use of sfx and sets in the queuing area helped establish an atmosphere that wasn't really there when my dad and I went back a few months ago. Sure, I guess 3D and all digital effects are cheaper and take up less space but it just feels fake. Though we did learn at Islands of Adventure that sometimes practical effects can age, when we noticed that the compies on the Jurassic Park river ride were fighting over a metal bar :p (the shirt they are fighting over had fallen off)

From an Oklahoman, they don’t use the Fujita scale anymore. They use the Enhanced Fujita scale, which takes into account the damage the tornados do in addition to the speed. The weakest knocking just leaves off of trees, and the strongest blowing houses down.

    • @ThemeParkHistory
      @ThemeParkHistory  6 лет назад +7

I didn't know that, thank you for the update! Here in NYC I'm pretty sure if you were ask anyone about the Fujita scale they would assume it's something to do with smoothies or something like that. We have no clue how lucky we have have it.

You’re lucky you rarely need it. Paxton wasn’t just hamming it up when he called an F5 tornado “the finger of God.”

Back when this ride first opened up they were using The Fujita Scale. I know because I was hugely interested in tornadoes because when I was either 4 or 5 years old when I was living in Cincinnati Ohio me and my mom was in an actual tornado. I guess that's why I'm so much interested in tornadoes now.
