+thrunsalmighty The song is "Je croix entendre encore" or in English "I believe I still hear" meaning she hears the sea. The opera is about the Pearl Fishers, n'est-ce pas? So the beach, the seashore and the waves -- and their sounds -- are an appropriate background for the song. This is a beautiful song pereformed by a beautiful diva. But I still prefer the duet Miriam Stockley sings with Alessandro Safino -- in the Italian version, "Un Ricordo."
+Ramon O I had not heard this done in "Eyetie". Very nice - and with no sound effects. Actually, Bizet's own orchestration provides the sea - a gentle and persistent swell coming from the cellos. I can't speak about the Italian words (because I don't understand them), but the French words seem sometimes a bad fit with the music (imo). I really prefer the English words: "In memory I lie beneath the palms and dream of love". Ah - how often has one done that?. Unfortunately there are not many versions in English - Heddle Nash being the only one I can think of. There is a nice version of the French by Alain Vanzo - to which someone has added the musical score. One can "sing along a Bizet" if one wants.
@@gramo63 5 years too late, but: no, the singer is not hearing the sea, but hearing the priestess that the tenor (who sings this) and the baritone have seen and heard some time ago. The horrible, splashy noises are not at all appropriate. Google was, even 5 years ago, a good source of lyrics for old opera arias. Shame on you for making it up instead of taking a few seconds to check what you are saying was true.

It's been a while, and I would have to revisit the translation, but I think it was rather "loose" - the "and dream of love" bit is particularly off the mark. The "and dream of love" is used in place of "sous les palmiers": "hidden beneath the palms". It scans OK, but makes rather different sense. The italian "mi par d'udir ancora, ascosto in mezzo i fior, la voce sua sonora...'" (I think) is something like "I think I can still hear, hidden in the middle of the flowers, her sweet(? sonorous doesn't feel like a good translation - the French is "la voix, tendre et sonore") voice..." which is a lot closer to the French. I'd be surprised if Bizet couldn't set a text appropriately to the music. I think the thing here is that Bizet *was* writing about a man in love, but the man's just reliving it through memories. The English translation is just terribly unsubtle - the French original is much better (it makes the audience work it out, which is always good). I'm British (English, even) and, though I love Nash's rendition, think there must be a better English translation possible.
