What can I say , Peter is spot on about Slovakia, I am Irish living in Slovakia for 5 years so I know what I am talking about , the difference in drinking is Slovak drink spirt more than beer plus it’s changed a lot all the older pissheads have died and younger people don’t drink so much, I am white but have come across lots of racism but again it’s the 50 + old people the lived during USSR still believe in the party ( Putin) younger people aren’t so brainwashed, as for Eastern Europe the land isn’t but the people are .

Sour milk with mashed potatoes which are full of caramelized onions and butter (but not milk), refried and in some cases loaded with sweet paprika. Is quite ok. But still why no cheese? I don't think Slovaks drink more or less than anybody else including South Africans. Sure every family has a piss head uncle, mine included, but the overwhelming majority are sensible. Like you I had to cut it out when I realised I wasn't winning hearts and minds.
I would say it all comes from racism against Roma people. ....I can see it now when I have been living in the UK for a long time....in many cases it is not acceptable how Roma people live in Slovakia. Roma people have to go to the court in Salzburg to get justice for their human rights!!!! Thanks God for EU laws.....otherwise it would turn much worse for Roma people. In 90's when borders opened towards the West after communism there was major migration of Slovak Roma people into the UK trying to settle there because of this racism in the whole Czechoslovakia not just in Slovakia, Czechs are not better in this case. IN Prague skinheads were actually killing Roma people. Terrible times. Certain political parties in power have not helped with these racists attitudes towards Roma people even now. "Sour milk" is like kefir full of probiotics and healthy bacteria ..good for your gut.
