Fugue by Tomas Svoboda performed by Florestan Trio

When Carol Sindell, the late Harold Gray and I came to Portland in 1977 to join the faculty of Portland State University as the Florestan Trio, Tomas Svoboda welcomed us warmly with great enthusiasm. We worked with him over the years, and I performed many times with Tomas, at Chamber Music Northwest and with Third Angle Ensemble. In 1978, Tomas composed his Passacaglia, Op. 87, which he dedicated to us, and in 1981 we premiered its companion piece, a lightning fast Fugue. Oregon Public Broadcasting produced two special programs featuring the Florestan Trio, and we performed Svoboda's Fugue in one of them. I am attaching it here. On Saturday, October 21, 2023 at 3pm, PSU will present a Memorial Concert with many friends and colleagues featuring works of Svoboda, who left us in 2022. This event will be a meaningful and poignant celebration of a great artist. Carol Sindell and Julia Hwakyu Lee will join me in a performance of his Passacaglia during that concert, which will take place in Lincoln Recital Hall at PSU.
