Good overview of what $3.5k to $4k a month can get you in Manhattan. As a Midwesterner who has always lived in the suburbs, I have a new appreciation for our home's space & accompanying mortgage price point. I can't say that I'd be raring to move to the West Village, but I enjoyed watching your video so much that I've subscribed to your channel. Thank you for an enjoyable video on real estate!
Ohh the memories... my studio was $600 a month back in 1998 and it was 650 SQF AND IT included electricity hahaha. I worked in midtown. I feel for y'all. :(
If it's anything like Paris, France, you have to prove that your monthly income is at least 3 times the monthly rent. That means that for any of these apartments you need a job that pays 10 to 12 thousand $ a month......
It’s so hard to choose I love the lofted listing but I also Ioved the listing with a shared backyard. The west village was not on my list but I’m glad you opened my horizons to try new locations 😊great video.
I cannot believe how prohibitive the rents in New York City have become, especially for studio and one bedroom apartments. When did this happen? How can any one person afford to live in these dwellings? Perhaps a couple making a very good salary each could live in them. I no longer live in New York and even though New York will always and forever be my home, no matter where I am, I am grateful that I no longer reside there as I don't know if I could even afford to stay.
It’s all about the career path you choose, salaries in cities are higher than Florida, Rhode Island etc. I’m hoping to go into the tech field, starting salary where I live is 60-80k but if I choose NYC Boston LA etc I may receive a starting salary of 80k-130k ($5,000-$7,600 with taxes included) which would not be possible where I am now.
Several decades ago when i graduated from college and moved into Manhattan, i found a large studio apartment in a doorman building, right across the street from Bloomingdales! I lived in it for 6 years. I swear on my life, this is true, i paid $297 per month rent. And 7 years ago i sold a tiny tiny co op apartment that my father had bought me, for $700,000. It was so small, you really can’t imagine. Maybe 500 square feet. The times they are a changin’.
Adrienne, I totally believe you. You have to wonder why there are so many homeless people on the streets of practically every major city in America. I honestly don't know where this is going and where it will stop. When I lived in New York I always told my husband at the dinner table that how much higher were rent and home prices going get. This is very scary.
@@auroratorres7873 i swear on my life that my little story is true! My parents had insisted thy if i move out, after college, it must be a doorman building, i was only 20 years old and in those days you walked around from building to building and asked the doormen if any vacancies. I was so excited to find something across the street from Bloomingdales. When i went to the renting agent ( with my mother, she insisted on coming), i was told you had to have $5000 in the bank to get the apartment, so my parents loaned it to me and i put it in my bank acct and later gave it back to them. But today, you need to have 40 times the yearly rental to rent an apartment in NYC. That’s crazy and it is why so many people must share an apartment. I never shared, i always wanted my own place, even now. And it is why so many are homeless. This is terrible. I watched Manhattan apartment rental videos for two hours last night. Apartments on a fifths floor walkup, smaller than a shoe box, for $4000 per month. It can’t get any worse.
I would be so depressed coming home to my shoebox apartment every night, and not having any money to do anything else after paying my rent. That's no way to live
Finance (venture, private equity, hedge funds, wealth management, stock traders, and all the other roles that support these industries), big law, medicine, real estate, fine art(sell side), big media, advertising & marketing, tech. NYC is home to all major industries.
Hi Hayley, discovered you by chance. Excellent video. Your work is that of a seasoned You Tuber, great narrative, comparisons and to the point. Great work!
4000k for an apartment is highway robbery hell 1500-2000 is highway robbery as well this landlords only charge that much because they know they can get away with it
I love watching videos like this, but those prices.... it's insane compared to what i'm used to in the Netherlands, 4,5k for a studio... Comparing that to the appartments that I have lived in (between 500-700 euros a month), I had way more space and room... I'm currently living in a 3 bedroom house, renting it for 638 a month.... Why is it so expensive across the atlantic?
I will stay in my beautiful garage 2000 sq town home for $950 per month and I own it. If need to go to NYC, I will stay at a hotel. I have many bars in my area and can use Ride Share plus I'm a short ride to several bigger cities near me. As I get older , I prefer to have nice country folks around me.
That all depends on how you decide to lay out the space! Personally I'm a fan of doing the living space closest to the door and the sleeping space closest to the window if the studio is just one long rectangle.
Wow Newyork really is shit. For $3200 you can get a high end luxury studio (rent+amenities+electricity) in the loop in Chicago. Not to mention floor-to-ceiling glass windows, by the river and 800-1200 sq.ft. with a concierge service
In Belgium for that money you can rent 2 houses, or be a home owner if you can pay that kind of money every month. Granted it's not in a big city, but still. Guess it comes down to how badly you want to live in a, in my opinion, filthy city, filled with car fumes, just to be able to say you live in New York 🤷🏼♀️
@@chashue6032 Small minded? For not wanting to live in a filthy city? How is that being small minded? Atleast I see the bigger picture and don't mind living in the countryside. Small minded is only seeing the city.
Wow. Way to put lipstick on a pig. Four grand times three (to keep rent under a third of your income) means you'd have to net over $120k a year for the privilege of living in a box smaller than your average master bathroom. And for what, exactly? To go and overpay for literally everything else the second you walk out your door? Pshaw. You could not pay me enough to live in NYC. Hemorrhaging money in exchange for absolutely nothing is a stupid life choice by every single metric.
I just watched it back and I am not sure I see anything that would indicate the burner is on. Either way though the building hasn't reported any issues, so if it was on someone must have turned it off by now!
Even if you make a good salary, I don’t see how one can afford $3-4K in rent alone. NYC is ridiculous. The space is just simply not worth it. Not to mention the mice you’re gonna inevitability live with.
Actually, it's quite the contrary! NYC has hit a 50 year vacancy low because so many people want to live here. NYC might not be for everyone, but I for one am happy I've made this place my home. www.nyc.gov/site/hpd/news/007-24/new-york-city-s-vacancy-rate-reaches-historic-low-1-4-percent-demanding-urgent-action-new#/0
This is one of the best videos on apartment tours with comparisons. You got straight to it and the narration of pro's and con's are super useful.
I am so glad you enjoyed it! I am still new to content creation, so I am just trying to improve little by little with every video
Totally agree !

#1-got a chuckle over you saying the bathroom was “very well maintained” and the toilet seat is completely missing!
Prices are bonkers 🫣
the words "a steal" and ny city apartments shoul not be used in the same sentence 😂

NYC: monthly rent x 50 to even qualify.
I prefer the first and the second apartments, I too love a window in the bathroom.
Love the townhouse

Cool 😎 video! I like #5 the most. Subscribed.
The herringbone floor pattern in the first video was very nice.
Great video Haley thank you for this!
Can someone explain to me why dishwashers are a necessity in New York when I hear you guys don't cook because the kitchens are so small?
I suspect those who don't cook simply do not want to cook, or simply they don't have a lot of space to comfortably dine.
I am waiting for a video that explains the jobs these people have that pays them enough to afford this much in rent….
This video really makes me grateful for what I call "My NYC S-hole"!!!

Manhattan, you pay for location. It is cheaper in the boroughs and across the water in NJ (more for the $$$) and you train in.
In 1993...500 dollars a studio in mid Manhattan...my friend had a baby grand piano in it...
luv 2, 3, and 5 is my.fav!!!

All are depressingly small, especially for the exorbitant price. Hard pass.
I used to live at 14th and 9th, 6th floor walkup. Nostalgia right here. Stupid money though.
Hey, there's a crack deal happening at 2:39 LOL
Wonder how the spaces change if you move to Brooklyn or Harlem
Don't worry, I'll be posting videos on both neighborhoods in the future! Stay tuned
I swear I’ve been in the second apartment for a party.
How about Roosevelt Island?
Unbelieveable.

This. Is. Criminal. - Great video though :)
I understand the craze of West Village and downtown but $4k will get you an updated doorman building in midtown and up.
Where do you put a bed in the studio apartment?
That all depends on how you decide to lay out the space! Personally I'm a fan of doing the living space closest to the door and the sleeping space closest to the window if the studio is just one long rectangle.

3200 for a freaking studio WHAT??????????
Least expensive 3200 😂😂😂 foh
High priced with no laundry in these units? Rather have laundry machine instead of a dish washer. $3,200 really should be $1,200. Too expensive.
