CLIP DESCRIPTION:
The team recommits to improving their grades while Timo (Rick Gonzalez) eloquently expresses his thanks to Coach Carter (Samuel L. Jackson).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The true-life story of a coach who tries to teach his players that there's more to life than basketball is brought to the screen in this sports drama. Ken Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) was once a star player on the Richmond High School basketball team in Richmond, CA, and years later, after establishing himself in publishing and marketing, he returns to the school and to the team as the new basketball coach. Carter quickly sees that his work is cut out for him -- the team is having an awful season, and their fights off the court are more decisive than their play on the court. While Carter wants to make the Richmond cagers into a winning team, he also wants a lot more -- to teach the boys to respect themselves and one another, and that they must excel in the classroom as well as in the gymnasium. Under Carter's guidance, the team turns their losing season around, with the state title a genuine possibility. However, when Carter learns that a number of his players have let their grade point averages slip below 2.3, as mandated in a contract he entered into with the students, he decides to lock the team out of the gym and send them into study hall until their marks improve. Carter's plan quickly becomes a subject of controversy among parents and team boosters, and their objections are soon picked up by the local news media, many of whom are not sympathetic to Carter's belief that his players must have goals beyond college ball or the NBA. Coach Carter also features Rob Brown and Rick Gonzalez as members of the team, and R&B diva Ashanti in her film debut as the girlfriend of one of Carter's players.

"You saved my life" is probably the best thing one could say to a good teacher
Not a teacher. A new basketball coach.

If I gave that inspirational speech in front of my team I'll just get mocked for the rest of my life.
Well, you see at that point of the movie they weren't only a team anymore, they were a family. That respected each other.
True
Don’t worry at all. People who would laugh at you are exactly the type of people “playing small” and “shrinking”, and who can’t realize being great and serious is actually the bravest and the most righteous way.
That's exactly the point.
Louis Stabile exactly, and you got the same name as my band teacher lmaoo
“I want to say thank you. You saved my life.”
Man, I got chills. Timo Cruz grew so much in this movie, and it proves here how important a strong father figure is in one’s life.
A strong father figure and some hard times create strong men. Cruz had them both in this movie
How neither got an oscar for that movie is beyond me.
Exactly and ppl minimize this fact
Principles, hard truth, willing to pay the price, believe in the bettet. The coach showed clarity, direction, consequences.
Pass the sick bucket
Fun fact: Samuel once said in an interview after Timo’s speech and when the scene was ending he had to try his hardest to hold back real tears.

This speech is very powerful. I’m 29 years old and was re-watching this movie on Netflix. This message resonates with me deeply and I did not grasp/understand it in my teenage years when I saw this movie. For many years I have played down my personality, charm, goals, intellect for acceptance. I’ve reached points in my professional life where lack of development in my personal life has held me back. The joy and shine we all carry derives from happiness; how you make other people feel around you. Finding peace and letting go of the hate we learned in the hood is not an easy task. In my earlier 20s I could argue that ‘hate’ is what fueled me to keep developing myself. Loving oneself and becoming the best version of yourself is a task more easily said than done. I yearn to be happy and the best version of myself.
👏
I would say that the joy and shine we all carry derives from us being made in the image of God and that we carry the same spirit that rose Jesus from the dead within us. At some point we all confront evil and malevolence, within ourselves because we are born with sin, but also within our family and community. This life is a spiritual battle, Jesus calls us to be a light on a hill for all to see, giving God the glory for everything, meanwhile satan tries to smother our light and devour us.
It's been almost 10 years and I keep coming back here to remind myself of the strength of this quote. Thank you Coach Carter for bringing this to my attention. You've lit my flame as a kid

“Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” - Timo Cruz
Study hall in the gymnasium and showing respect to Coach Carter is indeed my favorite segment in Coach Carter. Students urged Coach Carter to not resign as high school basketball coach thanks to them getting more help at study hall, achieving good grades, and more importantly cooperate and treat each other respectfully as a team. 👍
The beginning of what Timo says is actually from an author named Marianne Williamson
He then became a Slam Ball coach
@@jichaeljuicy4047 The whole speech is from her. Slightly paraphrased a bit though.
Very deep.. Look into his eyes 👀 when Timo Cruz says "Sir I just wanna say thank you… you saved my life".

I love this movie. Especially for the fact of knowing that this was filmed at my high school during my junior year. That gym was originally green and yellow with a jackrabbit painted on the wall. That was the scene where that group of boys turned into men, and everything. Once they got their shit together, I think everybody went on to college, and that was really the goal of the movie, not losing the basketball tournament.

@@69metersbelow25 Yeah..
Some people are really missing the point here due to lack of context. In the movie coach carter repeatedly asks Cruz what his deepest fear is. In the beginning you can wonder why he is asking that. I thought he asked it due to the fact he described Cruz as a frightened and confused young man. By asking the question he wants to maybe reach him, let him face his deepest fear or maybe even get to know him better. The thing was, they had to learn this quote in class too, so it was also a way of knowing they did not do their homework. Coach carter makes it a point that they are students at their core, not basketball players. So when they choose to learn even though the school opened up the gym against the coaches conviction, he shows him right here that he did learn and applies the knowledge on his own personality and the people he has in his environment.
Man this movie was a great lesson overall
Samuel wanted to cry...here now he got me crying
Jenelle Edwards it was a great movie
'our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure' 🙌💯
Cruz was already naturally intelligent just didn't apply/show it really because he was on his street shit but when he dropped that knowledge Carter was like your smarter than I thought to start with! Amazing scene
I think Carter always knew he was smart...that's why he put those expectations on him, to see if Cruz could rise up to it...

I have watched this movie as a kid and all I thought was “wow this guys trained hard and became good basketball players” today, about 13 years later, I understood that it was never about basket, basket was just the path to the destiny, underrated movie.
Totally unforgettable movie moment. Samuel L Jackson and Rick Gonzales executed this scene perfectly.
You people crediting Nelson Mandela are sadly incorrect. This quote is NOT authored by him. It is a poem/writing titled "Our Deepest Fear" by Marianne Williamson from the book "A Return To Love: Reflections on the Principles of A Course in Miracles." While Nelson Mandela did help the quote gain popularity by using it in his inauguration speech, it was not original writing on his part.
sadly ? Or not so much, at least they've heared some of the things Mandela said, and to me that's a good thing. Holding the truth/being mistaken isn't so important some times
Zboub Giving credit to someone who didn’t write something, say something or invent something is an issue. While it is an excellent quote, it didn’t come from Mandela and that is okay.
Give credit where credit is due to the right person.
OMG thank you! I'm gonna go read the book now 😁 I'm always on the lookout for inspiring stuff, thanks again man!
He did NOT say it at all. The Nelson Mandela Foundation confirmed that inaccuracy.
While mandela was a communist murderer, he new how to talk to a crowd.
i can watch this movie for 1000 times and not get bored
His acting holding the tears after the "you saved my life" it's one of the best I ever seen
That wasn't acting...that was real
Man there are so many things that makes me have goosebumps: how a show of tough love and support can change the lives of troubled young men, the amount of respect that this Coach gets from his team at the end of the movie. The change in Timo Cruz’s behavior from the most troubled and disrespectful kid to being arguably the one who most respect and admired the coach (excluding Damien, being his son). Carter completely turned their lives around to the better. I would’ve loved to see any parent’s face that wanted Coach Carter out because of the lockout when their kids decided not to play to improve their grades and have better chances for a college opportunity.
This scene of the movie always gets me and makes me cry..its so meaningful and powerful what they say especially what Timo Cruz says..
It’s a quote by Marianne Williamson. She’s running for President.
This was not only a great scene but this was truly a spectacular motivational film. The cast was stellar.
We all need a Coach Carter in our lives.
I have always loved this scene & seen it more times than I would like to admit. Saw this movie back in theaters when I was playing basketball in my middle school days. It was amazing then, and it’s amazing now - it’s truly timeless.
and i just noticed this time watching it how Battle doesn’t turn around to watch Timo, he just stares at Coach Carter. That’s powerful - 1:10
1:28
Can you imagine hearing that? For someone who works with troubled young men, that must be one of the best moments of his life
I just love this scene. Brings me to the realization that everyone has fears. No matter how tough you think you are, everyone is afraid of something or someone.
I'm afraid of heights

“Sir I just want to say thank you.. you saved my life” that hit very close to home. When I was in hs I played football my freshman and sophomore year I wasn’t very good. Getting to my junior year I grew and got bigger. I remember getting told I was going to be on Jv tho being devastated I looked at is as a time for me to prove my ability and make everyone proud. I remember a new coach coming in over the summer and me and him instantly clicking, he was going to be a assistant on jv and my position coach. Going through the season we bonded and got very close where he wasn’t only a football coach but he was a mentor on the team I was subjected to some bullying and hazing and had a lot of issues outside of football where I fell into the slump and I thought About giving up football and taking my life, my coach was there for me everyday and always kept in touch. At the end of the season I took home that DPOY. He did in fact save my life.
Such a great and scary quote. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful, beyond measure. Nobody wants to look back at their life and play the "what if," game. Isn't it a scary thought to think that you could have done whatever it is you wanted to do, but never did, for whatever reason...usually because you sell yourself a story that you can't do it? That you were powerful enough, and capable enough, if you only did it? I think that quote nails it. Deep down, it's not a fear of inadequacy that haunts most people. It's that deep down, they think, long after the chance has passed, that maybe they could have done it. Maybe it could have been so different. That's what he's saying, to me.

"OUR DEEPEST FEAR IS THAT WERE POWERFUL BEYOND MEASURE !!!" - Timo Cruz
Chris Tiger Harris it’s a quote by Marianne Williamson. She’s running for President.
No matter what we go through in life, you never truly know the battles people go through. I really believe a simple "hello" or show of support in any way can actually save a life. Kindness 👍
This is, without a doubt, the most American thing I've ever seen. American spirit DOES NOT DIE!!! Being a melting pot of societies only makes us stronger. We are untouchable!!
The movie had nothing to with america
the crazy part bout this scene is Timo Cruz was literally, psychologically, mentally, spiritually, physically and emotionally correct. we are very powerful as people, as gods and goddesses. we have the power to do anything we please in life. anything we've never even dreamed of. it all starts wit the mindset
"sir I just wanna say thank you... you saved my life" tears everytime in that part
I watched this movie the other day. And I saw what happened when they played their last game. But honestly....that doesn't MATTER. THIS scene...right there.....is the TRUE win for Coach Ken Carter. For him, this was about MUCH MORE than just a silly basketball game that Coach Carter was trying to teach these young men. It was MORE than just playing a game or honoring a contract. He wanted these boys to become GOOD MEN. Men who had the confidence and belief in themselves to get a good education and go to a good college college....not just stumble through high school, half-asleep with barely passing grades. He didn't want them to drop out of high school and wind up in jail or dead like his classmates did. He wanted them to be Men who treated both themselves AND their teammates and families and friends with respect. Men who had integrity and honor, both in basketball AND in life. And even though they LOST the last game, I think he taught them exactly that. And in doing so, he truly won.
THAT'S what they proved to him in this scene. I'm proud of them. And I'm sure, for Coach Carter, this moment was worth more than 1000 points on the basketball court.
what makes this speech so memorable is not what was said but who it was said by
A line uttered by the same actor who also played Rene Ramirez a vigilante who was part of Team Arrow in The Arrow TV Series.

I never peeped until I rewatched the movie that Coach Carter kept asking him “What’s your deepest fear” and this scene he was answering that question.
The guy that plays Cruz is a amazing actor in in this scene and powerful and also notice Coach Carters facial expression in this scene Samuel L Jackson is a incredible actor so real.

Full quote by Marianne Williamson:
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.
I first watched this movie about 8 years ago and the quote that Cruz said in this movie idk, it move me and something about it has stuck with me ever since. I can truely say that this had a big part in changing my life and working on myself and shining as bright as I can. Cruz it was you who saved my life
it's a double entendre bro that's the point of the quote it tells you to face your insecurities and fears head on.
I cried when he said, "You saved my life."
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate, Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frighten us. Your playing small does not serve the world. The way he inspires all his players to take control of their lives and make a positive influence in their community is truly a feat we must all look up to.
I love the reaction from coach when he is told he saved the young man's life, seems like a very genuine reaction
This Movie was shot at my High School and another private school for the gym scenes, and this quote gets me every time Cruz says it
My opinion one of the best part of the movie.
when he said "Our Deepest Fear..." The shivers and the Goosebumps came in. LOL!
Those are some of the deepest word.
"Thank You. You saved my life"
