I just wanted a Hand of Chayula melee build but there are zero skills in the game to support it. I hope the 2 coming soon Quarterstaff skills are for Chaos variants.
The second you get access to tier 3 support gems with this build put chaotic freeze on contagion. As it stands this defensive link would be your only form of mitigation. Additionally do not take darkness if you want to keep scaling as a chaos caster. Blasphemy with despair enables you to add hexblast to the build which is your best source for poison and is also your strongest source of freeze, and is also your best source of stagger. Late into endgame you can consider darkness for bossing, but before then it is really only enabling you to be good at running the trials of sekhema.
Also; dark effigy is your best ability to apply wither, and with this skill gem setup, will fire 4x per attack per target affected by your dots. Use hand of chayula to instead apply conductivity for a crit chance bonus or hunters mark for a crit damage bonus once you have scaled enough crit.
I'm currently experimenting with a poison and bone skills for the chaos monk. I initially cc with an envenomed bone cage, drop an impending doom curse, then fire the arrow skill with poison pustules and start spamming bone cage. The screen lights up with poison and doom explosions and rapidly spreads the contagion. I haven't even hit the spell and chaos passives yet and it's pretty impressive.
I wound up building something similar after I realized there was no necromancer ascendancy for witch. This seemed like the most obvious chaos caster. Thanks for the tip of running a focus with no weapon instead of a quarterstaff. I mostly use the quarterstaff for the cull skill but this seems better. I had nearly 2.5k ehp at the end of act 3 normal between HP, ES and shadow. I'm alternating between 5 characters and this definitely has the most survivability of them all. Shadow protects ES and allows it to recharge if your hits reserve shadow instead.
I'm also a chaos monk. I'm thinking of focusing on Chaos, but I stop myself because it feels like I'm not a monk anymore, but a witch. So I go with physical monk skills for me. I use Chaos for mob and monk physical skills for bosses
I tested this as well for a while and it always felt like trying to split my damage between Chaos and Physical without much conversion between the two was just limiting both their potentials. It's the first place I'd like to see them make changes for Acolyte personally
@@DrybearGamers yeah you're right, im thinking about that also, maybe ni the future ill drop all my chaos equips and skill and go full Physical, its just that contagion and hexblast is so satisfying to see

Contagion is a really convenient way to get more power charge generation via freeze for chayula monk. It’s nice to be able to weapon swap to an essence drain contagion setup for clear and then flicker strike and bell anything that doesn’t fall over.
Yea, this was the issue I had with Acolyte, it felt like there were skills missing when in reality it was a lot of misunderstanding. The passives are worded they grant damage as extra chaos damage, so you can pretty much play any standard build and it would work, since the vast majority of damage from the Monk skills are physical converted to cold or lightning, so no matter what damage you do, the extra chaos is just icing on the cake, you don't need to focus on it. If I didn't already spend this many hours leveling 4 characters, I would've honestly just made an Acolyte to try it out, since crit cold/chaos shatter does sound like a neat build.
Extra chaos damage is calculated from base damage before any increases are applied... This means that it's quite insignificant if chaos damage is not scaled.
While what you said is true lightning holds a better advantage since shock increase the damage that you deal which in turn would increase the chaos damaged added. Freeze doesn’t get that although I suppose the opening you get from freezing a boss is big enough to make up for not getting that debuff

@@LycanDreams9159 that is true but does not apply for spells for some reason. meaning if envenom hits triggered by a spell, the poison wont get tick stronger because of spell dmg, only chaos. For attacks, it is as you said.
So Mantra of Destruction is a ton of fun to use on Tempest Bell. It makes the bell do extra Chaos damage. Your bell can proc off Hexblast as well as Dark Effigy and since Bell needs combos the same as MoD so it works well together.
I’ve done a lot of testing as well and I think best build for chayula is cast or freeze / cast on crit hexblast with hypothermia and despair in blasphemy. Hey Drybear, I really like this build! The only issue I have with it is it seems Impending Doom doesn’t work with Hand of Chayula for me. Do you have an updated version of this build?
I wanna go full chaos, but leaving some wiggle room in case I wanna do one element with some penetrative. Doing quarter staff / crossbow build. Working really well so far, but for sure wanna see where you going with this.
I jsut started a Chaos Monk in HCSSF. I'm going with bows (rod + lightning arrow) early game with chaos spells to bolster my boss damage. Going to see how it works out. So far it's pretty fun but I haven't got too far yet to see how it pans out.
It’s actually really good, invoker just needs a nerf because of how strong elemental nodes are on the tree. As it stands chayula enables a lot of fun twists on the starting position, having strong potential as a minion build, a physical mage, a chaos mage, or a melee poisoner. invoker is just way simpler to scale.
The one thing that needs reworking is darkness. It’s just basically almost never worth it over access to spirit. Darkness is however pretty game breaking in trials of sekhema, because darkness reservation is not currently coded as taking damage.
it works because essence drain debuff is based off hit. for example if you do 100 dmg, it will apply 100 dmg dot and reality rending gives 100% more chaos dmg. so 100x2 =200 damage so you have 7% chance to do 2x dmg debuff.
They really need to look at mantra of destruction. 10 hits is so hard to do because hitting your bell doesn’t count and that’s a big part of melee monk gameplay. I don’t know if I will use this build because it’s so different from my melee reality rending build but it’s a great idea. I also didn’t know about the node that gives physical damage and converts it to chaos damage. I’m definitely pathing to it next time I play.
